Doxorubicin chemomyectomy: effects on evoked vocal fold tension and mucosal wave.

Chemomyectomy of the thyroarytenoid muscle is a potential alternative approach to the management of spasmodic dysphonia (laryngeal dystonia) that could provide a prolonged response. To be useful, chemomyectomy should produce weakening of vocal fold closure without disruption of the mucosal wave. Sixteen dogs were studied. In 8 animals, doxorubicin hydrochloride (3 mg) and verapamil hydrochloride (0.5 mg) were injected unilaterally into the thyroarytenoid muscle 2 months before evaluation. The remaining animals served as noninjected controls. Injection of doxorubicin and verapamil decreased the

Botulinum toxin for relief of bilateral abductor paralysis of the larynx: histologic study in an animal model.

We previously reported the effectiveness of botulinum toxin injections in the cricothyroid muscle under electromyographic guidance for lateralization of the true vocal cord in the mongrel dog. These additional experiments were performed to substantiate the effectiveness of botulinum toxin injections in laryngeal muscle to overcome airway obstruction produced by bilateral abductor vocal cord paralysis. A predetermined aliquot of the toxin was injected into the cricothyroid muscle of ten dogs, the duration of its effectiveness was noted, and repeated injections were given the animals. Biopsies o

[Unusual causes of biphonation].

Biphonation or diplophonia can be caused by several mechanisms. Although helpful for communication in some animals, biphonation in humans is usually perceived as increased roughness. Herein we report two unusual causes for biphonation. In the first case, a woman suffered from vocal fold bamboo nodes. These decoupled the anterior from the posterior part of the vocal folds, leading to an intermittent anterior-posterior vibration pattern during phonation. In the second case, a patient underwent a pitch-raising operation. Postoperatively we saw a transversal fixation of the vocal fold mucosa cause

A review of ultrasonic vocalizations in mice and how they relate to human speech.

Mice communicate through audible vocalizations, which are within the human hearing range, and ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), which are above the upper limit of human hearing. USVs are produced by rodents in social contexts including pup separation, territorial, and courting assays. Like birdsong, an established model for human speech, USVs in mice have been used as a model for understanding human communication. Their utility as a model of social communication is illustrated in neurodevelopmental conditions with a genetic basis, like autism spectrum disorders and Rett syndrome. As mice do not

Effect of application of fibrin glue on vocal fold healing after surgical manipulation in rabbits.

INTRODUCTION: A challenge in phonosurgery is achieving good vocal quality with minimal vocal fold fibrosis. Fibrin glue can be applied to minimize fibrosis; however, its use in the larynx is based primarily on clinical experience, particularly in extensive lesions. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of application of fibrin glue on collagen concentration at the late phase of the healing process after detaching a pedicled flap of the vocal fold cover in rabbits. METHODS: In this prospective animal study, twelve adult male rabbits underwent laryngeal microsurgery

Water limitation modifies vocal performance in California mice: implications for acoustic communication under environmental stress.

In arid environments or during prolonged drought periods, maintaining hydration becomes increasingly challenging, often requiring organisms to reduce investment in costly behaviors. Vocal performance is sensitive to hydration status because systemic dehydration can alter vocal fold mechanics and reduce vocal efficiency. In many mammals, vocalizations are produced when expiratory airflow induces self-sustained vibration of the vocal folds, making this mechanism vulnerable to systemic water imbalance. This study tested whether dehydration alters singing rate and acoustic song parameters in adult

Rapid inter-individual vocal interactions in freely behaving rats revealed by acoustic source localization.

Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in rodents have been widely used as indicators of affective states; however, their role in rapid temporal exchange between individuals remains largely unexplored, primarily due to technical limitations in identifying vocalizing individuals during free social interactions. Here, we combined acoustic source localization (USVCAM) with markerless multi-animal tracking to examine the temporal structure of vocal interactions in freely behaving rat dyads. In three dyads with sufficient vocal output, inter-individual vocalization intervals exhibited a clear peak at appr

Bats possess the anatomical substrate for a laryngeal motor cortex.

Cortical neurons that make direct connections to motor neurons in the brainstem and spinal cord are specialized for fine motor control and learning [1, 2]. Imitative vocal learning, the basis for human speech, requires the precise control of the larynx muscles [3]. While much knowledge on vocal learning systems has been gained from studying songbirds [4], an accessible laboratory model for mammalian vocal learning is highly desirable. Evidence indicative of complex vocal repertoires and dialects suggests that bats are vocal learners [5, 6], however the circuitry that underlies vocal control an

Frontal cortex activity during the production of diverse social communication calls in marmoset monkeys.

Vocal communication is essential for social behaviors in humans and non-human primates. While the frontal cortex is crucial to human speech production, its role in vocal production in non-human primates has long been questioned. It is unclear whether activities in the frontal cortex represent diverse vocal signals used in non-human primate communication. Here we studied single neuron activities and local field potentials (LFP) in the frontal cortex of male marmoset monkeys while the animal engaged in vocal exchanges with conspecifics in a social environment. We found that both single neuron ac

Effect of synthetic cathinones: mephedrone, butylone and 3,4 methylene-dioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) on social separation induced distress vocalization, vigilance and postural control of young domestic chicks.

Designer drugs have become a distinct social problem and health hazard in Europe and US, and their abuse has increased dramatically in the last decade. Selective effects of these agents on animal behavioral parameters may help in better understanding of the potential risks of human drug abuse. In the present study, the effects of three different abusive agents of the cathinone family, mephedrone, butylone and 3,4 methylene-dioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) were tested in young domestic chicks, following administration of single intraperitoneal injections (10mg/bwt). Delayed laryngeal implant infection and laryngocutaneous fistula after medialization laryngoplasty.

BACKGROUND: Medialization laryngoplasty is a common procedure for voice rehabilitation in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis. Complications are uncommon and delayed infections involving implants are rare. We report a delayed infectious complication following an animal scratch resulting in a laryngocutaneous fistula. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 73-year-old female underwent a successful and uneventful medialization laryngoplasty for idiopathic unilateral vocal fold paralysis using a silastic implant. More than one year after surgery, she presented with an anterior neck infectio

Birdsong fails to support object categorization in human infants.

Recent evidence reveals a precocious link between language and cognition in human infants: listening to their native language supports infants' core cognitive processes, including object categorization, and does so in a way that other acoustic signals (e.g., time-reversed speech; sine-wave tone sequences) do not. Moreover, language is not the only signal that confers this cognitive advantage: listening to vocalizations of non-human primates also supports object categorization in 3- and 4-month-olds. Here, we move beyond primate vocalizations to clarify the breadth of acoustic signals that prom

Corneal Topographic versus Manifest Refractive Astigmatism in Patients with Keratoconus: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study.

The ability to communicate through vocalization plays a key role in the survival of animals across all vertebrate groups. Although avian reptiles have received much attention relating to their stunning sound repertoire, non-avian reptiles have been wrongfully assumed to have less elaborate vocalization types, and little is known about the biomechanics of sound production and their underlying neural pathways in this group. We investigated alarm calls of Gekko gecko using audio and cineradiographic recordings. Acoustic analysis revealed three distinct call types: a sinusoidal call type (type 1);

Recurrent laryngeal nerve regeneration through a silicone tube produces reinnervation without vocal fold mobility in rats.

OBJECTIVES: We established an animal model of recurrent laryngeal nerve reinnervation with persistent vocal fold immobility following recurrent laryngeal nerve injury. METHODS: In 36 rats, the left recurrent laryngeal nerve was transected and the stumps were abutted in a silicone tube with a 1-mm interspace, facilitating regeneration. The mobility of the vocal folds was examined endoscopically 5, 10, and 15 weeks later. Electromyography of the thyroarytenoid muscle was performed. Reinnervation was assessed by means of a quantitative immunohistologic evaluation with anti-neurofilament antibody

Evolutionary loss of complexity in human vocal anatomy as an adaptation for speech.

Human speech production obeys the same acoustic principles as vocal production in other animals but has distinctive features: A stable vocal source is filtered by rapidly changing formant frequencies. To understand speech evolution, we examined a wide range of primates, combining observations of phonation with mathematical modeling. We found that source stability relies upon simplifications in laryngeal anatomy, specifically the loss of air sacs and vocal membranes. We conclude that the evolutionary loss of vocal membranes allows human speech to mostly avoid the spontaneous nonlinear phenomena

Characterization of 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations in male and female rats.

Male and female rats emit ultrasonic vocalizations in reproductive encounters. While estrous bedding has been used to elicit vocalizations of males, the number of responses is variable. We report a reliable method to assess vocalizations using exposure to a stimulus animal. The stimulus rat is placed behind a wire barrier for 5 min, then removed. Vocalizations are then recorded for 5 min. Experiment 1 validated this method and it was used for subsequent experiments. In Experiment 2, male rats were castrated and tested for the restoration of vocalizations. In one group, males were allowed to co

Cellular source and proinflammatory roles of high-mobility group box 1 in surgically injured rat vocal folds.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a chromatin-binding protein located in the cell nucleus. Following injury, immunocompetent cells secrete HMGB1 to the extracellular milieu under the stimulation of proinflammatory cytokines. Extracellular HMGB1 acts a danger signal that instigates the innate immunity and tissue repair. We previously reported HMGB1 in the vocal fold extracellular compartment between day 3 and day 7 following surgical injury. In this study, we further investigated the cell source of HMGB1 and the relationship of proinflammatory cytokine expression and H

Laryngoscopy.

The larynx normally functions in vocalization, deglutition, and respiration. There is no substitute for direct laryngoscopy in animals suspected of having laryngeal disease. Clinical signs that should alert the veterinarian include cough, choking while eating or drinking, exertional cyanosis and syncope, noisy breathing, inspiratory dyspnea, stridor, and significant change in sound production. Controlled anesthesia is mandatory for animals with suspected laryngeal disease because many of these patients have compromised respiratory function. Laryngoscopy is used to note abnormalities in the sha
