Can Resident Auditory-Perceptual Voice Assessments Predict Medical Urgency of Voice Disorders?

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Growing reliance on telemedicine has created new triaging challenges. This study investigated how effectively otolaryngology resident auditory-perceptual voice assessments performed via telemedicine determined the need for urgent in-person clinic visits. METHODS: Twelve otolaryngology resident physicians (PGY1-PGY5) performed auditory-perceptual assessments on 25 voice samples recorded during initial voice evaluations. Voice samples were balanced in severity and taken in equal numbers from patients with the following diagnoses: benign laryngeal lesions, laryngeal cancer

Addition of Wendler Glottoplasty to Voice Therapy Improves Trans Female Voice Outcomes.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: VT is often considered the preferred treatment for vocal feminization in transgender patients. However, Wendler glottoplasty offers a surgical option for increasing fundamental frequency and perception of vocal femininity. We aimed to determine whether the addition of glottoplasty to VT results in greater fundamental frequency elevation and improvement in quality-of-life measures. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: Forty-eight trans female patients were treated for vocal feminization. Twenty-seven patients underwent VT, and 21 patients underwent VT with

Lee Silverman voice treatment (LSVT) mitigates voice difficulties in mild Parkinson's disease.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder and many PD patients experience some type of voice and speech disorders during the course of illness. In this study, the aim was to investigate the effect of Lee Silverman voice treatment (LSVT) on improving voice difficulties in patients with mild PD using voice handicap index (VHI). Methods: This interventional study was conducted on 23 PD patients who were randomly divided into 2 groups: a treatment group (PD-T) (n=13) and a no-treatment group (PD-NT) (n=10). Neurologically healthy control (NNC) group consisted of 1

A visual analog scale for patient-reported voice outcomes: The VAS voice.

OBJECTIVES: Although patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) can be useful for assessing quality of life, they can be complex and cognitively burdensome. In this study, we prospectively evaluated a simple patient-reported voice assessment measure on a visual analog scale (VAS voice) and compared it with the Voice Handicap Index (VHI-10). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective survey. METHODS: An abbreviated voice measure was designed by a team of otolaryngologists, speech pathologists, and patients that consisted of four VAS questions related to (a) a global question of voice disturbance, (b) physical

Japanese version of voice handicap index for subjective evaluation of voice disorder.

Recently, the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), developed in the United States, has been highlighted as a means to assess a patient's perceptions of the severity of his or her voice disorder. The VHI is based on a self-administered questionnaire that quantifies the degree of a patient's disability related to his/her voice disorder. The questionnaire was translated into Japanese and applied to Japanese patients with various kinds of disordered voice or dysphonia. The results were analyzed and the usefulness discussed. In this study, 546 patients (281 males and 265 females) were included. Mean VHI sco

[Standardised voice diagnostics--first experiences with a computer-aided voice strain test].

INTRODUCTION: Vocal strain deficits are not yet standardised quantified. The investigation of vocal parameters in real professional requirements is still in experimental stage. Simulating these requirements in a shorter time with higher sound pressure levels is already possible by using a computer aided test. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 28 patients with voice disorders and 12 subjects without voice complaints attended a computer-aided voice strain test (reading a text 15 min, five minutes at 70 dB (A), 75 dB (A) and 70 dB (A); software and hardware: DiVAS, XION, Berlin). Before and after test they

Correlation between voice handicap index and voice laboratory measurements in dysphonic patients.

Factors underlying voice disorders can be categorized into three distinct domains: emotional, physical, and functional. The Voice Handicap Index (VHI) subjectively evaluates voice disorders in terms of these three factors. On the other hand, Voice Laboratory Measurements (VLM) use objective criteria to evaluate the severity of voice disorders. Use of these two different tests (VHI and VLM) on dysphonic patients has, however, tended to yield results that vary widely in their conclusions. This report reviewed 135 testing sessions on dysphonia patients. Seventy-nine of the tests were VHI, and 56

Poor voice quality in future elite vocal performers and professional voice users.

The voice quality of 86 occupational voice users, i.e., students of a high school for audiovisual communication, was assessed by means of a multidimensional test battery containing: the GRBAS scale, videolaryngostroboscopy, maximum phonation time, jitter, lowest intensity, highest frequency, dysphonia severity index (DSI), and voice handicap index (VHI). In a questionnaire on daily habits the prevalence of smoking, eating habits, and vocal abuse were recorded. A comparison of the voice characteristics of the future occupational voice users with a control group revealed significant differences.

Vocal Hygiene for Reducing Symptoms of Voice Disorders and Improving Voice Quality.

PURPOSE: Voice acts as a tool of trade among professionals. Consequently, people in such professions are more likely to experience vocal problems due to their frequent use of voice. Early intervention and preventative care can help patients avoid developing more serious vocal pathologies. The study aimed to provide vocal hygiene training (VHT) and determine its impact on reducing voice-related problems and improving voice quality among professionals in Pakistan. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted among teachers, lawyers, and telemarketers who screened positive on Voice Handicap

Objective assessment of pediatric voice disorders with the acoustic voice quality index.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Instrumental measures of voice allow practitioners to assess the severity of voice disorders and objectively measure treatment outcomes. Instrumental measures should be calculated on both sustained vowel and connected speech samples to ensure ecological validity. However, there is a lack of appropriate, validated acoustic measurements for use in the pediatric population. The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) is a multivariate acoustic measure of dysphonia that has been found to be reliable, valid, and have diagnostic accuracy and response to change in an adult populati

Voice-sparing cricotracheal resection.

The treatment of benign subglottic stenoses can be challenging. It requires an experienced multidisciplinary team. It is important to define the aetiology, severity and number/types of any pretreatments of the stenosis. Short-term symptom relief can be achieved with endoscopic techniques; however, this relief comes at the price of a high likelihood of restenosis, which often is more severe than the original stenosis. Successful long-term treatment of subglottic stenosis can be achieved by surgical resection in most cases.  Cricotracheal resection is the established standard technique to treat

Hyposalivation Affecting Womens' Voice.

OBJECTIVES: Balanced hydration is crucial for optimal physiological function, whereas hypohydration may cause adverse effects. Like many other organs, the larynx is negatively affected by hypohydration, potentially affecting voice production. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine voice properties in women diagnosed with dry-mouth. METHODS: Twenty-four women diagnosed with hyposalivation and 24 age-matched controls were recruited. All participants underwent three sialometry tests for quantifying oral-dryness. These tests were conducted in three conditions: after 2-hour fasting, a

Transgender Voice and Communication.

Voice is a complex marker for gender and pivotal to the gender reassignment process. The goal of the transgender patient is to achieve a voice and communication style that is congruent with their gender identity. Voice and speech therapy are fundamental for successful transition. Phonosurgery, to adjust pitch, can be an important adjunct to relieve the patient from active pitch elevation of voice to free them to focus on the other adjustments needed and learned through behavioral training with speech and voice therapy. The authors review current management options for transgender patients with
