Prevalence of voice quality deviations in the normal adult population.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of voice quality deviations in a normal adult population. One-hundred twelve subjects, aged 17 to 80, read a short paragraph aloud into a high-fidelity tape recorder and completed a case history questionnaire. A group of 11 pretrained judges rated overall performance of each taped sample on a seven-point equal-appearing intervals scale, then designated those quality components which contributed toward deviant ratings. Eighty-two percent of the group received a mean severity rating lower than 1.99; 16% had a rating between 2.00 and 2.99;

Impact of cochlear implants use on voice production and quality.

Cochlear implant users experience difficulties controlling their vocalizations compared to normal hearing peers. However, less is known about their voice quality. The primary aim of the present study was to determine if cochlear implant users' voice quality would be categorized as dysphonic by the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) and smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS). A secondary aim was to determine if vocal quality is further impacted when using bilateral implants compared to using only one implant. The final aim was to determine how residual hearing impacts voice quality. Twenty-s

Meta-Analysis on the Validity of the Acoustic Voice Quality Index.

BACKGROUND: Acoustic measurements are useful tools to objectively measure overall voice quality. The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) has shown to be a valid multiparametric tool to objectify dysphonia severity. The increasing number of validity studies investigating AVQI's validity demands a comprehensive synthesis of the available outcomes. OBJECTIVE OF REVIEW: The aim of the present meta-analysis is to quantify the evidence for the diagnostic accuracy of the AVQI, including its sensitivity, specificity and likelihood ratio statistics, and its concurrent validity and sensitivity to chang

Listening for Dysphagia: Voice Quality Sequelae of Material in the Airway.

PURPOSE: Postswallow voice abnormality is often assumed to indicate the presence of material in the laryngeal airway (MIA), but prior research has not shown definitive evidence of a causal relationship. This study investigated if endoscopically confirmed MIA (prandial material or secretions) generates specific voice quality attributes that can be perceptually identified by experienced listeners. METHOD: Forty-four dysphagic adults underwent endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. Time-linked audiovisual recordings of pre- and postswallow phonation were analyzed to determine the presence, amount,

The Effect of Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure on Voice Quality.

OBJECTIVES: Inflammation of the upper airways, thickening of the lateral pharyngeal walls, elongation of the soft palate and uvula, hypertrophy of the tonsils and base of the tongue can be seen in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome patients. Changes in these structures may affect articulation and phonation, negatively affecting the quality of the voice. Positive airway pressure (PAP) treatment reduces the volume of the root of the tongue, dissolves the edema in the upper respiratory tract, increases the posterior pharyngeal area, and positively changes the quality of the voice. METHODS: A total

Voice-Related Quality of Life in Patients with Chronic Rhinosinusitis.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) has long been associated with vocal dysfunction. However, studies quantifying the presence of voice dysfunction in CRS patients or the effects of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) are sparse. The goal of this study was to determine the voice-related quality of life in patients undergoing FESS for CRS using the validated Voice Related Quality of Life Survey (VRQL). We correlated the preoperative VRQL scores to the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) scores, and we determined the effect of FESS on postoperative VRQL scores. METHODS: Consecutive pat

Vocal Symptoms and Voice Quality in Children With Allergy and Asthma.

OBJECTIVES: The background for dysphonia is multifactorial, and health-related factors have been listed among the factors affecting voice. In previous studies with adult participants, allergy and asthma have been indicated to have a connection to vocal symptoms. With the majority of previous research being studies involving adult participants, it is unclear what the effect of allergy and asthma on children's voices is. The aim of this study was to investigate if allergies and asthma are risk factors for having vocal symptoms. METHODS: The material was collected through paper questionnaires di

An acoustic analysis of the effects of surgical therapy on voice quality.

An automated computer system was used to measure changes in vocal quality resulting from laryngeal surgery. Five acoustic parameters were computed and seven listeners made judgments on vowel samples recorded before and after surgery from 37 patients. Presurgery and postsurgery changes in the five acoustic measures were compared with the perception of change in vocal harshness. A multiple regression analysis showed that four of the five acoustic measures accounted for a large amount of the variance in the judgment of change of voice quality following surgery. The measures may provide a quick an
