Empowering communities, educating researchers: reflections on researcher training through the 'Be the Voice of Your Community' Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) event.

BACKGROUND: Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) is increasingly recognised as essential in research design and funding. While benefits for patients include empowerment and trust in science, PPI also offers unique learning opportunities for early-stage researchers (ESRs), however, structured experiential PPI training for ESRs remains limited. The objective of this work is to report on the impact of a structured PPI engagement event, Be the Voice in Your Community of Health Research on ESRs' confidence, skills, and understanding of PPI, while supporting patients from diverse ethnic backgrounds

Effects of Therapy With Semi-occluded Vocal Tract and Choir Training on Voice in Adult Individuals With Congenital, Isolated, Untreated Growth Hormone Deficiency.

OBJECTIVES: Voice is produced by the vibration of the vocal folds expressed by its fundamental frequency (Hz), whereas the formants (F) are fundamental frequency multiples, indicating amplification zones of the vowels in the vocal tract. We have shown that lifetime isolated growth hormone deficiency (IGHD) causes high pitch voice, with higher values of most formant frequencies, maintaining a prepuberal acoustic prediction. The objectives of this work were to verify the effects of the therapy with a semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVTT) and choir training on voice in these subjects with IGHD. We sp

The Additive Effectiveness of Inspiratory Muscle Training on Glottic Closure and Subjective Voice Outcomes of Patients With Benign Lesion After Hyaluronic Acid Laryngoplasty.

OBJECTIVES: For patients with glottic insufficiency disease, injection laryngoplasty is a rapid and efficient management option that complements voice therapy. Some studies have indicated that respiratory muscle training may also show promise in patients with voice disorders. However, the effect of respiratory muscle training in patients with glottic insufficiency was reported to be limited, and whether it provides additional benefit after standard management requires further evaluation. We aimed to investigate the effectiveness of inspiratory muscle training on glottis closure and patient-rep

Efficacy of voice training on benign vocal cord lesions after surgery: A systematic review, meta-analysis, and trial sequential analysis of randomized clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Voice training (VT) aids patients in achieving or restoring physiological harmony among the vocal organs and in correcting the faulty conditioned reflexes induced by benign vocal cord lesions (BVLs). Herein, we designed a systematic review and meta-analysis for the first time to evaluate the effect of VT on BVLs after surgery based on several outcomes. METHODS: Four electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library) and 3 Chinese databases (CNKI, VIP, and Wanfang) were searched through September 26, 2024, without any restrictions. We used Review Manager, v

Effect of Lee Silverman Voice Treatment-BIG Intervention Versus Balance Training via Tele-rehabilitation on Balance and Functional Mobility Among Community-Dwelling Elderly: A Comparative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Elderly individuals often experience loss of confidence, gait abnormalities, and impaired balance, which can lead to fear of falling and limitations in functional mobility. Lee Silverman Voice Treatment-BIG (LSVT-BIG) addresses balance and activities of daily living (ADLs) in individuals with Parkinson's disease by training them to increase the amplitude of movements from head to toe. It targets functional mobility through "functional component movements," in which a specific task is selected and the individual is trained to perform it with large-amplitude movements and then appl

Smartphone Application-Based Voice and Speech Training Program for Parkinson Disease: Feasibility and Satisfaction Study With a Preliminary Rater-Blinded Single-Arm Pretest and Posttest Design.

BACKGROUND: Up to 75% of patients with Parkinson disease (PD) experience voice and speech impairments, such as breathy phonation and low speech volume, which worsen over time and negatively impact the quality of life. However, given their increasingly limited mobility, face-to-face speech therapy is often inaccessible. Mobile health (mHealth) apps offer accessible and cost-effective alternatives; yet, their application in PD-specific, self-delivered voice therapy remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, adherence, and satisfaction of a self-delivered sma

Effect of Voice Therapy Using Semioccluded Vocal Tract Exercises in Singers and Nonsingers With Dysphonia.

OBJECTIVES: Voice therapy with semioccluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTE) has a long history of use in singers and nonsingers with dysphonia. SOVTE with increased vocal tract impedance leads to increased vocal efficiency and economy. Although there is a growing body of research on the physiological impact of SOVTE, and growing clinical sentiment about its therapeutic benefits, empirical data describing its potential efficacy in singers and nonsingers are lacking. The objective of the current study is to evaluate vocal tract function and voice quality in singers and nonsingers with dysphonia af

Behavioral management of pediatric dysphonia.

Children's voice disorders may be functional or organic in cause and a thorough evaluation by the otolaryngologist and speech-language pathologist is necessary to obtain the proper diagnosis, to understand the underlying etiologic factors, and to prepare a plan of treatment that is appropriate for the child. Because voice disorders may be present with developmental communication problems, treatment must include all factors that affect growth and development of the child.
