3D Imaging of the Comparative Anatomical Structure of the Ossa Cranii in Some Ruminants.

Three-dimensional comparative descriptions of the ossa cranii across representatives of the Camelidae, Giraffidae, and Bovidae remain limited despite their relevance to comparative veterinary anatomy and clinical practice. Given the distinct structural variations and functional adaptations of these families, a descriptive comparison of ossa cranii morphology is needed to advance anatomical knowledge and establish species-specific reference data. This study compared the principal ossa cranii of camel, giraffe, cattle, sheep, and goat to identify conserved anatomical features and species-specifi

An Intraoperative Rescue Procedure for the Protruding Premaxilla in the Repair of Complete Bilateral Cleft Lip: Rapid Premaxillary Molding.

BACKGROUND: Primary reconstruction of complete bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) with protruding premaxilla in one-stage surgery is challenging because of the tension on muscle repair. Such patients are also common in the developing countries. For this condition, we have applied intraoperative "rapid premaxillary molding (RPM)" technique and obtained satisfactory results. METHODS: We reviewed the data of patients with complete BCLP with protruding premaxilla applying intraoperative RPM including both our institution and cleft missions to developing countries in the past 20 years. The influence of different types of hard-palate closure in two-stage palatoplasty on maxillary growth: cephalometric analyses and long-term follow-up.

Using cephalometric analysis we investigated the influence on maxillary growth of two different types of hard-palate closure in two-stage palatoplasty. In 12 patients with complete unilateral cleft lip, alveolus, and palate, the lip and soft-palate were closed between 3 and 7 months of age. These 12 patients were then assigned to two groups of 6. In one group the hard palate was closed at 1 year 5 to 11 months of age by a vomer flap with a skin graft (VF group, Osada's two-stage palatoplasty) and in the other group it was closed by the mucoperiosteal pushback procedure (PB group). Morphometric analysis of the nasal septum in normal Chinese individuals using a three-dimensional model of the nasal septum with facial CT scanning.

OBJECTIVES: Three-dimensional (3D) models were reconstructed based on computed tomography (CT) scan data and to analyze the morphometric characteristics of the nasal septum in Chinese individuals. METHODS: Ninety-six healthy adults aged 20-83 years old without confirmed nasal disorders were enrolled in this study from 2014 to 2015. 3D models of the nasal septum were reconstructed based on their CT scan data, and 7 indices were used for the evaluation of the spacial structure of the nasal septum. RESULTS: Data of the nasal septum revealed larger nasal septum volumes in males than those in fem

Presurgical Preparation of Infants With Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate: The SAC-PP-MR Innovative Technique.

In this article, we demonstrate an effective, cheap, and fast way to shape the nasal alar cartilage in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. This technique straightens the vomer and brings the philtrum, columella, premaxilla, and the maxillary frenum to the midsagittal plane, while the alveolar ridges are shaped and positioned. This reduces the lip and palatal cleft to zero even in a 4-week period.

Palatoplasty: suturing the mucoperiosteal flaps to the hard palate through hole.

We satisfactorily repaired a wide cleft palate using a method of V-Y pushback and anchoring the oral mucoperiosteal flap onto the bony ridge of the cleft. An 8-year-old Vietnamese girl had a wide incomplete bilateral posterior cleft palate associated with congenital cardiac malformations. The gap of the posterior cleft was 2.5 cm, which exceeded the total widths of the palatal shelves. We applied V-Y pushback and used a vomer flap to close the wide cleft palate. The posterior two thirds of the nasal mucosae from the cleft margins were sutured to the vomer flap. The nasal side of the anterior o

[Anatomo-clinical features of an erysipeloid form of cutaneous leismaniasis in Tunisia].

The erysipeloid form of cutaneous leishmaniasis is considered as an unusual and rare clinical presentation in Tunisia. Our prospective study on 4 observations, aimed at examining the clinical, histological and progressive features of the "erysipeloid" form of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Our patients were 3 females and one male more than 62 years old. Their cutaneous leishmaniasis was clinically characterised by an infiltrated and extensive plaque which was localised on the face covering the nose and cheeks looking like erysipelas. The treatment was intramuscular meglumine antimoniate (Glucantime)

Cross-over septal flap technique for choanal atresia surgery in two centres: how I do it.

BACKGROUND: Choanal atresia is a congenital obstruction of the posterior nasal aperture. Endoscopic endonasal surgery has led to successful choanal atresia repair. This paper describes our surgical technique using septal mucosal flaps without the need for stenting. METHODS: This study comprised a multicentre retrospective review of patient notes. A cross-over septal technique is described, whereby bilateral vertical mucosal incisions are made at the posterior third of the septum, and the atretic plate and posterior vomer are removed. One flap is pedicled superiorly and rotated over the bare s

Anterior paraseptal cartilage development in normal and cleft lip and palate human fetal specimens.

As part of an ongoing study of age-related variation in fetal cleft lip and palate nasal capsule morphology, anterior paraseptal cartilage development was examined histologically in a sample of nine complete cleft lip and palate human fetuses, and 20 without clefts ranging in age from 8 to 21 weeks. A computer reconstruction technique was used to quantify lengths, volumes, and generate growth curves from various regression equations. Anterior paraseptal cartilage length was seen to change in a sigmoidal fashion while volume changes were best described by a logarithmic curve for both groups, wi

The anatomy of congenital choanal atresia.

Congenital choanal atresia is rare. Previous literature has dealt with the diagnosis and management of these patients, but there are no reports that accurately describe the nature of the deformity. This is a presentation of two patients with tomographic demonstration of the abnormality which confirms the surgical descriptions of previous authors. These abnormalities are (1) narrowing of the entire nasal chamber, (2) primary bony obstruction with an area of membranous obstruction, and (3) gross deformity of the vomer.

Prenatal growth patterns of the upper jaw complex with implications for laryngeal echolocation in bats.

Craniofacial morphology is extremely diversified within bat phylogeny, however growth and development of the palate in bats remains unstudied. The formation of both midline and bilateral orofacial clefts in laryngeally echolocating bats, morphologically similar to the syndromic and non-syndromic cleft palate in humans, are not well understood. Developmental series of prenatal samples (n = 128) and adults (n = 10) of eight bat species (two pteropodids, four rhinolophoids, and two yangochiropterans), and two non-bat mammals (Mus musculus and Erinaceus amurensis), were CT-scanned and cranial bone

A new cleft palate repair.

Cleft palate can be repaired by a palatal mucoperiosteal flap, but we have devised a new technique for cleft palate repair using a wide mucoperiosteal flap with an alveolar ridge mucosa and a cleft margin flap. This technique leaves the mucosa of the nasal cavity and vomer intact. The results include (1) good velopharyngeal competence and normal articulation, (2) few cases of fistula formation, and (3) minimal maxillary retardation.

The Impact of Facial Growth in Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate Treated With 2 Different Protocols.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: It is well known that palatoplasty can often cause disturbances in maxillary growth. The use of a single-layer vomer flap for the early closure of the hard palate is controversy among surgeons. The aim of this study is to compare the 10-year facial growth of 2 surgical protocols in the treatment of patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate performed by a single surgeon. METHODS: This retrospective analysis includes 43 nonsyndromic patients with complete unilateral cleft lip with or without a vomer flap for the closure of the hard palate during cleft-lip repair. "Septoplasty" Performed at Primary Cleft Rhinoplasty: A Systematic Review of Techniques and Call for Accurate Terminology.

OBJECTIVE: Primary cleft nasal repair can include septal reconstruction. We hypothesize that primary cleft septoplasty and adult septoplasty have fundamental differences that render these procedures as distinct surgical entities. DESIGN: Systematic review of the PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases performed on pediatric cleft and general adult septoplasty techniques through December 2021. (PROSPERO ID CRD42022295763). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Collected data included information on septal dissection, septal detachment, and management of the bony and cartilaginous septum. RESULTS: Twenty-eig

Osteotomy of the Premaxilla in Bilateral Cleft Lip: A Useful Technique Following Failure of Primary Lip Closure.

OBJECTIVES: Successful aesthetic repair of the bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) is one of the most challenging cases encountered by a surgeon. This challenge is heightened when the premaxilla is anteriorly protruded in relation lateral maxillary segments. Our aim is to demonstrate a useful technique for reducing the cleft size before secondary lip repair. We use a premaxillary osteotomy to posteriorly reposition the premaxilla between the lateral segments. METHODS: Six patients with BCLP underwent repositioning of the protruded premaxilla. Five patients had previous primary lip closure p
