On March 27 through 29, 2009 a consensus conference was held to address a series of issues and propositions related to clinical practice, research, and education in behavioral sleep medicine (BSM). The conference, held in in Ponte Vedra, Florida, included presentations given by key opinion leaders regarding the past and future of BSM, discussion panels and work groups, and anonymous voting on a slate of propositions. There was broad consensus that certification in sleep medicine (i.e., American Board of Sleep Medicine or American Board of Medical Specialties) does not confer automatic expertis

OBJECTIVE: Towards developing an instrument to measure knee and hip osteoarthritis (KHOA) flare, the Outcome Measures in Rheumatology (OMERACT) Flares in OA Working Group first sought to identify and define relevant domains of flare in KHOA.
METHODS: Guided by OMERACT Filter 2.1, candidate domains were identified from data generated in interviews, in English or French, with persons with KHOA and health professionals (HPs) who treat OA. The first and second rounds of an online Delphi process with patients and HPs, including researchers, selected relevant domains. The third round provided agree

Civic engagement can shape collective responses to climate change. However, evidence on how climate-related disasters affect political participation in Africa remains limited. Combining Global Fire Atlas records with Afrobarometer surveys of more than 100,000 people in 34 African countries, we show that people living close to wildfires are more likely to vote, contact local councillors, attend community meetings, and raise collective issues, whereas protest participation shows weaker responses. These effects are larger in arid regions and among people with higher climate literacy or access to

Qualitative research has shown public libraries to be well-loved institutions. But, as they are increasingly under attack in the US, quantitatively understanding the drivers of public voting support can help policy makers establish allocation priorities. Using novel voter response datasets (2010-2022) at the library system-year level nationally (N = 982), and at the precinct-year level within Washington state (N = 5,380), referendum modeling approaches are used to investigate local preferences for public libraries. Further, this study probes environmental condition effects on preferences. Resu

Confidence in the conduct and results of American elections has declined and polarized along party lines in recent years. Can a nonpartisan public information campaign featuring election officials enhance trust in elections when delivered to skeptical voters during a contentious political contest? We analyze a preregistered, randomized field experiment conducted during the 2024 US presidential election in which conservative voters were randomly assigned to a control condition or to receive a multimodal messaging campaign designed by political professionals explaining protections on election in

Understanding what and who shapes urban growth and how it unfolds in the Global South is critical to ensure theories and predictive models of urban expansion and, consequently, global environmental change, are salient to contemporary contexts. Much of the urban expansion in the Global South occurs in informal settlements where urbanization is not officially permitted and residents often lack access to basic services and infrastructure. As a result, formalizing settlements becomes an asset for political transactions where politicians provide titles and improve conditions in exchange for residen

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to classify tongue lesion types using tongue images utilizing Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs).
METHODS: A dataset consisting of five classes, four tongue lesion classes (coated, geographical, fissured tongue, and median rhomboid glossitis), and one healthy/normal tongue class, was constructed using tongue images of 623 patients who were admitted to our clinic. Classification performance was evaluated on VGG19, ResNet50, ResNet101, and GoogLeNet networks using fusion based majority voting (FBMV) approach for the first time in the literature.
RESULTS: In t

Political engagement (PE) is associated with a sense of empowerment. PE by parents affects children's lives. This study explored parents' attitudes about inclusion of political engagement discussion in well-child care. Because voting is an expression of empowerment, we hypothesized that voting would be related to higher parenting self-efficacy. We administered a brief questionnaire to a convenience sample of parents/guardians at well-child visits at an urban hospital. The questionnaire included 10 Likert scale questions touching on parenting efficacy; beliefs about political engagement; voting

BACKGROUND: International and UK legislation confirms and supports the right of adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) to vote. It is widely accepted, although not previously empirically confirmed, that citizens with ID are under-represented at the polls.
METHOD: To document the extent of their under-representation at the polls, the names and addresses of adults using services for people with ID in one county in the UK, were compared with the marked electoral register following the 2005 general election. Adults using services for people with ID were identified either as un-registered, as

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) is a complex autoimmune bullous disease disease with variable clinical presentations and multiple possible diagnostic tests, making an international consensus on the diagnosis of EBA essential.
OBJECTIVES: To obtain an international consensus on the clinical and diagnostic criteria for EBA.
METHODS: The International Bullous Diseases Group (IBDG) met three times to discuss the clinical and diagnostic criteria for EBA. For the final voting exercise, 22 experts from 14 different countries voted on 50 different items. When > 30% disagreed with a

Current fashion supports aligning health policy with the recommendations of deliberative forums, or mini-publics. These forums' participants are selected randomly from the general public (sometimes with overrepresentation of direct stakeholders or of underrepresented sectors). After being informed and exchanging public reasons with fellow participants under discursive rules that engage all as equals, participants vote on and sometimes rank policy recommendations. According to supporters, a deliberative democratic process that holds such forums and translates their recommendations to policy leg

Asymmetry in the perception and expression of emotions in the brain can be observed in the cheek presented in a portrait. The left cheek is more often put forward in an emotional photo, but the context of the portrait is important as leftward posing is attenuated in more serious settings. Similarly, leftward posed portraits are perceived as more emotionally expressive. However, there has not been an investigation into how the perception of left and right poses impacts vote choice. We predicted that, when tasked with identifying the portrait they would vote for and the portrait that appeared mo

OBJECTIVE: To assess how patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) decide whether to add oral disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) versus injectable biologic DMARDs when methotrexate response is inadequate.
METHODS: Using nominal group technique (NGT), RA patients answered the question "What sort of things are important to you when you make a decision between adding pills versus injectable medications to treat rheumatoid arthritis when methotrexate fails to control RA disease activity?" Patients nominated, discussed, and voted for the responses.
RESULTS: Forty-seven RA patients part

OBJECTIVE: To assess why patients choose TNF- versus non-TNF biologics for treating active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) after methotrexate-failure.
METHODS: Participants responded to the question "What sort of things help a patient decide the treatment choice between the two types of injectable biologics, TNF biologic versus non-TNF biologic, for treating active rheumatoid arthritis when methotrexate fails to control RA disease activity?" They nominated responses, discussed and then voted.
RESULTS: Forty-four patients participated in 10 nominal groups (Birmingham; n=6; New York City: n=4), who

Esophageal motility disorders result from dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter and abnormalities in esophageal peristalsis, often presenting symptoms such as dysphagia, chest pain, or heartburn. High-resolution esophageal manometry currently serves as the primary diagnostic method for these disorders, but it has some shortcomings including technical complexity, high demands on diagnosticians, and time-consuming diagnostic process. Therefore, based on ensemble learning with a mixed voting mechanism and multi-dimensional attention enhancement mechanism, a classification model for esopha

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common perinatal mental health disorder that leads to adverse maternal and infant outcomes. Existing screening strategies rely on self-reported symptom presence, potentially delaying early identification. This study aims to integrate biological, psychological, and social predictive factors using an ensemble learning (EL) strategy to develop a superior early prediction machine learning (ML) model for PPD.
METHODS: By integrating sociodemographic characteristics, clinical baseline data, and psychological test results of 1323 postpartum women, PP

OBJECTIVES: Ultrasound is a promising low-risk imaging modality that can provide objective airway measurements that may circumvent limitations of drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE). This study was devised to identify ultrasound-derived anatomical measurements that could accurately predict collapse pattern and location based on the VOTE criteria (VOTE: Velum, Oropharynx, Tongue, and Epiglottis).
METHODS: Ultrasonography was performed on 20 adult patients of various airway subsites while awake and sedated with concurrent endoscopy performed during drug-induced sleep. Measurements were obtained
