Digital disease management programme reduces chronic gastrointestinal symptoms among racially and socially vulnerable populations.

OBJECTIVE: Considerable disparities exist in access to gastrointestinal (GI) care and digestive outcomes across gender, racial, and socioeconomic groups. We evaluated (1) whether adults with chronic GI symptoms from diverse demographic groups would use a digital digestive care programme and (2) the effects of participation on GI symptom severity and other patient-reported outcomes. METHODS: Access to a digital digestive chronic care programme was provided to participants regardless of prior digestive diagnoses or symptoms for 90 days. The intervention included GI symptom tracking, personalise

Disparities in kidney care in vulnerable populations: A multinational study from the ISN-GKHA.

Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, children, displaced people, and refugees, often encounter challenges in accessing healthcare. In this study, we used data from the third iteration of the International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA) to describe kidney care access and delivery to vulnerable populations across countries and regions. Using data from an international survey of clinicians, policymakers, and patient advocates, we assessed the funding and coverage of vulnerable populations on all aspects of kidney replacement therapies (KRT). Overall, 167 count

Exploring Transportation Challenges and Opportunities for Mobility-Vulnerable Populations Through the Social-Ecological Model.

Community mobility is a vital activity of daily living. Mobility-vulnerable populations-individuals with incomes below the federal poverty threshold, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and older adults-face transit disparities. Advanced technologies (e.g., ride-sharing) may mitigate transportation inequities, but limited evidence considers mobility-vulnerable populations. Utilizing the social-ecological model, the team examined challenges and opportunities associated with transportation availability, accessibility, affordability, acceptability, and adaptability among two socioeconomic

Manhattan Vision Screening and Follow-Up Study in Vulnerable Populations: 1-Month Feasibility Results.

Purpose/Aim: In the United States, high rates of vision impairment and eye disease disproportionately impact those who lack access to eye care, specifically vulnerable populations. The objective of our study was to test instruments, implement protocols, and collect preliminary data for a larger 5-year study, which aims to improve detection of eye diseases and follow-up eye care in vulnerable populations using community health workers (CHW) and patient navigators. In the study, trained CHWs conducted vision screening and patient navigators scheduled on-site eye exams and arranged appointments f

Mercury concentrations in China's coastal waters and implications for fish consumption by vulnerable populations.

We assessed mercury (Hg) pollution in China's coastal waters, including the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the South China Sea, based on a nationwide dataset from 301 sampling sites. A methylmercury (MeHg) intake model for humans based on the marine food chain and human fish consumption was established to determine the linkage between water pollutants and the pollutant intake by humans. The predicted MeHg concentration in fish from the Bohai Sea was the highest among the four seas included in the study. The MeHg intake through dietary ingestion was dominant for the fish and

The effectiveness of tobacco control policies on vulnerable populations in the USA: a review.

Despite population-wide efforts to reduce tobacco use, low-income populations in the USA have much higher rates of tobacco use compared with the general population. The principal components of tobacco control policies in the USA include cigarette taxes, clean indoor air laws and comprehensive interventions to increase access to tobacco cessation services. In this review, we describe the effectiveness of these policies and interventions in reducing tobacco use among vulnerable populations, focusing on persons with mental health disorders and substance use disorders, persons who have experienced

Self-efficacy as a unifying construct in nursing-social work collaboration with vulnerable populations.

The authors consider self-efficacy practice as an organizing construct guiding nursing-social work action research in partnership with older homeless and formerly homeless African-American women. The authors, both academics who together have worked with members of this vulnerable population for a decade and a half, report on their unifying action research perspective immersed in self-efficacy theory. We examine how our adaptations of Bandura's classic four sources of self-efficacy form a distinctive intervention practice designed to help older African-American women emerge from homelessness. W

Nightingale theory and intentional comfort touch in management of tinea pedis in vulnerable populations.

Vulnerable populations, specifically migrant farm workers and persons experiencing homelessness, are often at an increased risk for foot infections. This risk is related to their working and living conditions, socioeconomic status, limited access to health care, frequent exposure to wet environments, limited access to clean and dry socks and shoes, bathing or laundry facilities, and daily routines that requires them to be on their feet for long periods of time. After years of caring for these populations and hundreds of clinical encounters, an evidence-based, effective method of foot care that

Disruption and recovery: a qualitative study on health services for vulnerable populations during the pandemic.

Public health emergencies like pandemics results in systemic disruptions, leading to substantial indirect consequences beyond direct morbidity and mortality. The experiences from previous outbreaks have shown disproportionate effects on the vulnerable groups. This study aims to identify the challenges faced by these groups in attaining routine health services during the COVID-19 pandemic and the strategies used for service recovery. A qualitative study done in Jodhpur district in Western India using inductive thematic approach. Data were collected through eight key informant interviews with he

Informed Consent in Vulnerable Populations: The Case of Detained Persons with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Informed consent (IC) is a critical component in research involving human participants, yet participants' understanding of consent information remains underexplored, particularly in vulnerable populations. This study aimed to assess whether attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was associated with understanding and willingness to sign the IC among detained individuals. This secondary analysis used data from a randomised trial conducted in a Swiss prison (n = 183). Statistical analyses included regression models. There was no significant difference in understanding of the IC between t

Tobacco Use, Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems, and Vulnerable Populations: Current Landscape and Opportunities for Improvement.

The tobacco epidemic has claimed countless lives, caused significant morbidity, and cost billions of dollars in direct costs and lost productivity. Despite its acute vascular effects, nicotine alone has not been definitively linked to cardiovascular events. Rather, additives found in cigarettes and other tobacco products likely play a bigger role in tobacco's link to cardiovascular events. The emergence of electronic nicotine delivery systems introduces a new challenge, particularly among certain groups. Understanding the groups vulnerable to tobacco product use, identifying factors that influ

A Remote Oral Self-Care Behaviors Assessment System in Vulnerable Populations: Usability and Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Preventative self-care can reduce dental disease that disproportionately burdens vulnerable populations. Personalized digital oral self-care behavioral interventions offer a promising solution. However, the success of these digital interventions depends on toothbrushing data collection e-platforms attuned to the needs and preferences of vulnerable communities. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to assess the usability and feasibility of the Remote Oral Behaviors Assessment System (ROBAS), which has been adapted to address the unique requirements of socioeconomically disadvantaged

A cautionary tale for health education initiatives in vulnerable populations: Improving nutrition in Haiti prisons.

INTRODUCTION: Prisons in low-income countries have barriers to providing adequate nutrition to the incarcerated. This perspective discusses a quality improvement program with health education to improve nutrition provided to men in two prisons in Haiti. METHODS: Incarcerated men in the National Penitentiary in Port Au Prince and the prison in Mirebalais were the focus of the program. A culturally competent educational intervention was delivered to the prison cooks. Program evaluation included a baseline and a follow-up assessment in 2021 and 2022 in both prisons. Calories, body composition, a

Proteomic mapping of differentially vulnerable pre-synaptic populations identifies regulators of neuronal stability in vivo.

Synapses are an early pathological target in many neurodegenerative diseases ranging from well-known adult onset conditions such as Alzheimer and Parkinson disease to neurodegenerative conditions of childhood such as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCLs). However, the reasons why synapses are particularly vulnerable to such a broad range of neurodegeneration inducing stimuli remains unknown. To identify molecular modulators of synaptic stability and degeneration, we have used the Cln3 -/- mouse model of a juvenile form of NCL. We profiled and compared the mole

Simulating demand for cigarettes among pregnant women: A Low-Risk method for studying vulnerable populations.

A substantive obstacle to experimentally studying cigarette smoking and use of other tobacco products in pregnant women is the risk of adverse effects on mother and fetus from experimenter administration of the product of interest. The purpose of this study is to investigate bypassing that obstacle by using behavioral economic simulation tasks. In the present study we used the Cigarette Purchase Task (CPT) to simulate changes in demand for hypothetical cigarettes as a function of varying cigarette prices. Participants were 95 pregnant women who completed the CPT prior to participation in a smo

[Measles vaccination campaign among vulnerable populations during the peak of the 2011 epidemic in Marseilles].

BACKGROUND: From 2008 to the end of 2011, Europe experienced a major outbreak of measles. The outbreak hit France especially hard, with measles hotspots in the South-East of France. It is known that people living in precarious socio-economic conditions are more exposed to infectious diseases. Regarding the local situation, the NGO "MdM-Marseille" decided to conduct a vaccination campaign among the Roma community living in camps. METHODS: The campaign was planned with two injections of a combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR) in a one month interval for all young people born since 1
