BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The 6-min walk test (6MWT) is the most widely utilized method of assessing exercise capacity in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Cardiopulmonary exercise testing has the advantage of providing additional physiological information over 6MWT. The goals of our study were to describe the addition of gas exchange measurements to 6MWT and to determine how these parameters were related to the severity of PAH in three major subgroups of PAH (idiopathic (IPAH), connective tissue disease-related (CTPAH) and congenital heart disease-related (CHPAH)).
METHODS: Seventy-six

Walking abnormalities are prominent in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). We modified the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) for use as an outcome measure in patients with DMD and evaluated its performance in 21 ambulatory boys with DMD and 34 healthy boys, ages 4 to 12 years. Boys with DMD were tested twice, approximately 1 week apart; controls were tested once. The groups had similar age, height, and weight. All tests were completed. Boys who fell recovered rapidly from falls without injury. Mean +/- SD [range] 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) was lower in boys with DMD than in controls (366 +/- 83 [125

UNLABELLED: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbid-mortality world wide, leading not only to pulmonary damage but also to multisystemic impairment, with repercussions on skeletal muscles and the ability to undertake effort, as measured in the six-minute walk test (6-MWT).
AIMS: To correlate the level of obstruction in COPD with lactate concentration and heart rate (HR) at rest, and distance walked. To correlate distance walked with blood gas analysis and correlate desaturation in 6-MWT with post 6-MWT lactate concentration and heart rate.
METHODS: COPD pati

BACKGROUND: The prognostic significance of the 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) in patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) has not been thoroughly investigated.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This study evaluated 998 patients with severe AS who underwent a 6-min walk test as part of a large multicenter prospective cohort. Patients were categorized as either fast walkers (6MWD ≥300 m; n=515) or slow walkers (6MWD <300 m; n=483). During a median follow-up of 2.3 years, 861 (86.3%) patients underwent surgical or transcatheter aortic valve replacement (AVR; 87.0% of fast walkers vs. 85.5% of slow walkers).

PURPOSE: The six-minute walk test (6MWT) measures aerobic function, but normative values for early-onset scoliosis (EOS) do not exist. This study assesses 1) 6MWT distances for children with EOS and standard deviations [SD] from age- and sex-matched normal controls, and 2) correlations between 6MWT and pulmonary function tests (PFTs).
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 6MWTs administered at a single institution from 2012 to 2023. PFTs were obtained: Forced vital capacity (FVC) percent (%) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) %.
RESULTS: 163 ambulatory children with

INTRODUCTION: The figure-of-eight walk test (F8WT) assesses gait on a curved path, reflecting everyday walking complexity. Despite recognized validity among elderly individuals, its application in neurological disorders remains inadequately explored. This scoping review summarizes evidence regarding F8WT use, validity, and clinical applicability among individuals with neurological disorders.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases. After reading the full text of the selected studies and applying predefined inclusion cri

BACKGROUND: The six-minute walk test (6MWT) is widely used to assess functional capacity and prognosis in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). However, studies on oxygen saturation recovery after the 6MWT in patients with IPF are rare. In our study, we investigated the relationship between oxygen saturation recovery time and dyspnea, fatigue, quality of life, prognostic markers and pulmonary hypertension (PH).
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, IPF patients diagnosed according to current guidelines and followed up in our Interstitial Lung Disease Outpatient Clinic between 2

Impaired gait is one of the cardinal symptoms of degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) and frequently its initial presentation. Quantitative gait analysis is therefore a promising objective tool in the disclosure of early cervical cord impairment in patients with degenerative cervical compression. The aim of this cross-sectional observational cohort study was to verify whether an objective and easily-used walk and run test is capable of detecting early gait impairment in a practical proportion of non-myelopathic degenerative cervical cord compression (NMDCC) patients and of revealing any corr

Background: To date, there is no reference for a 6-min walk test distance (6-MWD) immediately after cardiac surgery. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the determinants and to generate equations for prediction reference for 6-MWD in patients immediately after cardiac surgery. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of the 6-min walk test (6-MWT) prior to participation in the cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program of patients after coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) or valve surgery. The 6-MWT were carried out in a gymnasium prior to the CR program immediately after the cardiac surgery. A

BACKGROUND: Slow heart rate recovery (HRR) after exercise is associated with autonomic dysfunction and increased mortality. What HRR criterion at 1-minute after a 6-minute walk test (6MWT) best defines pulmonary impairment?.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 5008 phase 2 COPDGene (NCT00608764) participants with smoking history were included. A total of 2127 had COPD and, of these, 385 were followed-up 5-years later. Lung surgery, transplant, bronchiectasis, atrial fibrillation, heart failure and pacemakers were exclusionary. HR was measured from pulse oximetry at end-walk and after 1-min s

BACKGROUND: Ambulatory function predicts morbidity and mortality and may be influenced by cardiopulmonary dysfunction. Persons living with HIV (PLWH) suffer from a high prevalence of cardiac and pulmonary comorbidities that may contribute to higher risk of ambulatory dysfunction as measured by 6-minute walk test distance (6-MWD). We investigated the effect of HIV on 6-MWD.
METHODS: PLWH and HIV-uninfected individuals were enrolled from 2 clinical centers and completed a 6-MWD, spirometry, diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) and St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ). Results

OBJECTIVE: In the last few years some of the therapeutical approaches for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) are specifically targeting distinct groups of mutations, such as deletions eligible for skipping of individual exons. The aim of this observational study was to establish whether patients with distinct groups of mutations have different profiles of changes on the 6 minute walk test (6MWT) over a 12 month period.
METHODS: The 6MWT was performed in 191 ambulant DMD boys at baseline and 12 months later. The results were analysed using a test for heterogeneity in order to establish possible

The aim of our longitudinal multicentric study was to establish the changes on the 6min walk test (6MWT) in ambulant SMA type III children and adults over a 12month period. Thirty-eight ambulant type III patients performed the 6MWT at baseline and 12months after baseline. The distance covered in 6min ranged between 75 and 510m (mean 294.91, SD 127) at baseline and between 50 and 611m (mean 293.41m, SD 141) at 12months. The mean change in distance between baseline and 12months was -1.46 (SD 50.1; range: -183 to 131.8m). The changes were not correlated with age or baseline values (p>.05) even th

OBJECTIVE: To assess the distance covered by both eutrophic individuals and individuals with different grades of obesity and correlate the data obtained with spirometric values. This study is justified by the existing difficulty in assessing the functional capacity in obese individuals, and by the low cost and good specificity of six-minute walk test (6MWT) in predicting reduced capacity for activities of daily living for any individual.
METHODS: One hundred fifty-four individuals of both genders were assessed after being divided into two groups: G1, obese individuals (n = 93, BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²)
