A qualitative exploration of adherence to wearing removable cast walkers in patients with diabetic foot ulcers.

OBJECTIVE: To explore adherence to wearing removable cast walkers (RCWs) among patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). METHOD: A qualitative study was conducted by interviewing patients with active DFUs and using knee-high RCWs as their offloading treatment. The interviews were undertaken at two diabetic foot clinics in Jordan, using a semi-structured guide. Data were analysed through content analysis by developing main themes and categories. RESULTS: Following interviews with 10 patients, two main key themes with a total of six categories were identified: theme 1-reporting of adherence l

Movement strategies and sensory reweighting in tandem stance: differences between trained tightrope walkers and untrained subjects.

Does skill with a difficult task, such as tightrope walking, lead to improved balance through altered movement strategies or through altered weighting of sensory inputs? We approached this question by comparing tandem stance (TS) data between seven tightrope walkers and 12 untrained control subjects collected under different sensory conditions. All subjects performed four TS tasks with eyes open or closed, on a normal firm or foam surface (EON, ECN, EOF, ECF); tightrope walkers were also tested on a tightrope (EOR). Head, upper trunk and pelvis angular velocities were measured with gyroscopes

Gait parameters of children with spastic diplegia: a comparison of effects of posterior and anterior walkers.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of posterior and anterior walkers on the gait parameters of five children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. Computer-based kinematic analysis was used to investigate differences in gait. Gait laboratory data indicated that use of the posterior walker (1) facilitated more upright posture in these subjects, as seen in decreased trunk and hip flexion during stance phase; (2) decreased double stance time; and (3) increased walking velocity. According to parent report, both the parents and their children preferred the posterior walker. Most p

Effects of pre-exercise glycerol supplementation on dehydration, metabolic, kinematic, and thermographic variables in international race walkers.

BACKGROUND: Due to the increase in global temperature, it is necessary to investigate solutions so that athletes competing in hot conditions can perform in optimal conditions avoiding loss of performance and health problems. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effect of pre-exercise glycerol supplementation during a rectangular test at ambient temperature mid (28.2ºC) on dehydration variables in international race walkers. METHODS: Eight international male race walkers (age: 28.0 years (4.4); weight: 65.6 kg (6.6); height: 180.0 cm (5.0); fat mass: 6.72% (0.66); muscle mass: 33.3 kg (3

Reimagining robotic walkers for real-world outdoor play environments with insights from legged robots: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: For children with mobility impairments, without cognitive delays, who want to participate in outdoor activities, existing assistive technology (AT) to support their needs is limited. In this review, we investigate the control and design of a selection of robotic walkers while exploring a selection of legged robots to develop solutions that address this gap in robotic AT. METHOD: We performed a comprehensive literature search from four main databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and IEEE Xplore. The keywords used in the search were the following: "walker", "rollator", "smart walke

Collision avoidance strategies between two athlete walkers: Understanding impaired avoidance behaviours in athletes with a previous concussion.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who have sustained a concussion often display associated balance control deficits and visuomotor impairments despite being cleared by a physician to return to sport. Such visuomotor impairments can be highlighted in collision avoidance tasks that involves a mutual adaptation between two walkers. However, studies have yet to challenged athletes with a previous concussion during an everyday collision avoidance task, following return to sport. RESEARCH QUESTION: Do athletes with a previous concussion display associated behavioural changes during a 90°-collision avoidance

Comparison of upper extremity kinematics in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy using anterior and posterior walkers.

This prospective study analyzes the upper extremity kinematics of 10 children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy using anterior and posterior walkers. Although both types of walkers are commonly prescribed by clinicians, no quantitative data comparing the two in regards to upper extremity motion has been published. The study methodology included testing of each subject with both types of walkers in a motion analysis laboratory after an acclimation period of at least 1 month. Overall results showed that statistically, both walkers are relatively similar. With both anterior and posterior walke

Neonatal Dandy-Walker syndrome: a case report.

Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is usually identified prenatally or after hydrocephalus-related symptoms emerge. We report a term male neonate in whom classic DWS was incidentally discovered during admission for purpura and mild tachypnea. Although fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) had suggested vermian agenesis, definitive postnatal brain MRI on day 6 confirmed complete vermian absence, left cerebellar hypoplasia, and a large posterior-fossa cyst communicating with the fourth ventricle. The purpura and respiratory symptoms resolved rapidly with supportive care, and the infant was discharged

Dandy-Walker syndrome: an updated literature review.

The Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) encompasses a group of anatomical midline cerebellar disorders with potential shared embryological origins, including the classic Dandy-Walker malformation, Blake's pouch cyst, and mega cisterna magna. Genetic factors, chromosomal abnormalities, and environmental influences contribute to its etiology. DWS, occurring in 1 in 25,000 to 35,000 live births, often presents with hydrocephalus and other central nervous system anomalies. Clinical manifestations vary, with symptoms appearing from neonatal to adult stages. Diagnosis is performed through neuroimaging, eval

Dandy-Walker malformation in an individual with ABL1 variant.

Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is often sporadic, but there are a growing number of genetic disorders that have been associated with this condition. We present a female individual with a de novo variant in ABL1, c.734A>G (p.Y245), who was diagnosed prenatally with DWM. ABL1-related neurodevelopmental disorder was recently identified but brain malformations have not been well characterized to date. We reviewed the published literature and identified one additional individual with DWM and ABL1-related disorder, which suggests a possible association with this malformation.

Dandy-Walker malformation and syringomyelia: a rare association.

PURPOSE: Dandy-Walker malformation is a rare condition due to imperforation of the Blake's pouch during intrauterine brain development, usually leading to early severe hydrocephalus. The association with holocord syringomyelia is rare, and from the Gardner's first report in 1957, only 23 cases have been described, mostly from autopsy series and pre-MRI period. Besides a worsening of clinical picture, its occurrence generates some concern about the best surgical treatment that varies widely among the literature reports. METHODS: An 11-year-old girl with Dandy-Walker malformation presented with

Problems of older persons using a wheeled walker.

BACKGROUND: Wheeled walkers (WWs) are used to improve mobility and for fall prevention in older persons, but not all users are satisfied with the usability of WWs. Intelligent WWs are being developed to improve the usability. AIMS: The aim of this study was to support the development of intelligent WWs by investigating possible problems of using a WW. METHODS: This study investigated 22 geriatric in-patients (median age 82 years) with and without their WW while opening a door against the direction of walking and passing through. Other possible problems when using WWs were identified by inter

[Aicardi syndrome with Dandy-Walker type malformation].

INTRODUCTION: Aicardi syndrome (OMIM 304050) was first described in 1965. Its classic triad consists of infantile spasms, partial or total agenesis of the corpus callosum and ocular disorders, such as chorioretinal lacunae. It has been posited that it is due to a mechanism involving X-linked dominant inheritance. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a full-term female, with no pathological familial history or parental consanguinity, with a prenatal diagnosis of Dandy-Walker type malformation, who presented convulsions, coloboma of the optic nerve, thoracic vertebral block with presence of scoli

Trigeminal neuralgia due to Dandy-Walker syndrome.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a common pain in the orofacial region. Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a congenital malformation of the cerebellar and the fourth ventricle foramina atresia. Dandy-Walker syndrome is rarely found in patients with TN. This article presents a 36-year-old man with the symptoms of typical TN. His physical examination was entirely normal. An enhanced magnetic resonance imaging was taken. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed the bilateral lateral ventricle, the fourth and third ventricle significantly enlarged with severe obstructive hydrocephalus, a huge posterior fossa c
