Trunk muscle activation patterns during walking among persons with lower limb loss: Influences of walking speed.

Persons with lower limb amputation (LLA) walk with altered trunk-pelvic motions. The underlying trunk muscle activation patterns associated with these motions may provide insight into neuromuscular control strategies post LLA and the increased incidence of low back pain (LBP). Eight males with unilateral LLA and ten able-bodied controls (CTR) walked over ground at 1.0 m/s, 1.3 m/s, 1.6 m/s, and self-selected speeds. Trunk muscle onsets/offsets were determined from electromyographic activity of bilateral thoracic (TES) and lumbar (LES) erector spinae. Trunk-pelvic kinematics were simultaneously

Dynamic walking features and improved walking performance in multiple sclerosis patients treated with fampridine (4-aminopyridine).

BACKGROUND: Impaired walking capacity is a frequent confinement in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Patients are affected by limitations in coordination, walking speed and the distance they may cover. Also abnormal dynamic walking patterns have been reported, involving continuous deceleration over time. Fampridine (4-aminopyridine), a potassium channel blocker, may improve walking in MS. The objective of the current study was to comprehensively examine dynamic walking characteristics and improved walking capacity in MS patients treated with fampridine. METHODS: A sample of N = 35 MS patients (EDSS me

A Faster Walking Speed Is Important for Improving Biomechanical Function and Walking Performance in Stroke Survivors.

This study compares joint kinematics and kinetics of young stroke survivors who walk <0.79 m/s (slow) or >0.80 m/s (fast) with reference to a healthy able-bodied group and provides clinical recommendations for guiding the gait rehabilitation of stroke survivors. Twenty-two young stroke survivors (18-55 y) were recruited from 6 hospital sites in the United Kingdom. Stroke participants were classified by walking speed as slow (<0.79) or fast (>0.80 m/s), and joint kinematics and kinetics at the pelvis, hip, knee, and ankle were measured during walking on level ground at self-selected speed. Comparison of gait between walking up and down an incline with a walking device in older adults.

To identify the gait differences between cane and rolling walker (RW) use on incline and how these walking devices were received and used, 26 qualified older adults walked randomly on downward and upward with a cane and a RW respectively. With the RW use, downward walking show a faster velocity, higher cadence, less stance time, bigger steps and strides than upward walking (p≤.05); but no differences were seen with cane use. When comparing walking between a RW and a cane, those using a cane had faster velocity, larger step and stride lengths (P≤.01) but only during the upward condition. Inclin

Age-related interplay of walking economy, stability, and neuromuscular coordination during single- and dual-task walking.

BACKGROUND: Efficient and stable walking is essential for preserving independence in older age, yet the interplay among walking economy, stability, and neuromuscular coordination, especially under cognitive-motor interference, remains unclear. This study examined age-related changes in these factors during single-task walking (STW) and dual-task walking (DTW) to determine their contributions to energetic cost. METHODS: Fifteen older adults and thirteen young adults performed STW and DTW. Net VO2 and cost-ratio were derived from metabolic data. Whole-body kinematics and electromyography of low

Comparison of walking variations during treadmill walking test between neurogenic and vascular claudication: a crossover study.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are two distinct conditions characterized by similar symptoms including leg pain and walking limitations due to claudication. Differentiation between both origins can be difficult and characteristics such as symptom manifestations, time to relief in rest position and pain localization should be considered when determining diagnosis and the treatment plan. The objectives of this study were to compare changes in walking time to symptom change during treadmill tests and self-reported outcomes measures related to claudi

Relationship between oxygen cost of walking and level of walking disability after stroke: An experimental study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Since physical inactivity is the major risk factor for recurrent stroke, it is important to understand how level of disability impacts oxygen uptake by people after stroke. This study investigated the nature of the relationship between level of disability and oxygen cost in people with chronic stroke. METHODS: Level of walking disability was measured as comfortable walking speed using the 10-m Walk Test reported in m/s with 55 ambulatory people 2 years after stroke. Oxygen cost was measured during 3 walking tasks: overground walking at comfortable speed, overground wal

Interlimb coordination during forward walking is largely preserved in backward walking in children with cerebral palsy.

OBJECTIVE: Limb kinematics in backward walking (BW) are essentially those of forward walking (FW) in reverse. It has been argued that subcortical mechanisms could underlie both walking modes. METHODS: Therefore, we tested whether participants with supraspinal/cortical deficits (i.e. cerebral palsy) show the kinematic reversal from FW to BW. 3D gait analysis was performed in 15 children with diplegia and 11 children with hemiplegia to record elevation angles of upper arm, lower arm, upper leg, lower leg, and foot, and were compared to those of 23 control subjects. Coordination patterns were co

A comparison of walking performance between individuals with and without asymptomatic peripheral artery disease using the six-minute walk test and the incremental shuttle walk test.

OBJECTIVE: Two walking tests including the six-minute walk test (6MWT) and the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) are widely used to evaluate functional ability in individuals with disease conditions. However, it remains unclear whether these walking tests effectively manifest clinical impairment in individuals with asymptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD). We aimed (i) to compare the walking performance of individuals with and without asymptomatic PAD using the 6MWT and ISWT, and (ii) to investigate the correlation between ankle-brachial index and toe-brachial index (ABI-TBI) and the wa

Biomechanical implications of the onset of walking.

Changes in long bone strength associated with the onset of bipedal walking in humans have been previously documented in a longitudinal growth sample. However, it is unclear if this transition can be detected using archaeological, cross-sectional data, which likely encompass more cultural and biological variation than a single dataset of living children. Focusing on variation in cross-sectional polar second moment of area, we evaluate the ratios of femoral, tibial, and humeral strength in seven temporally diverse samples of individuals from birth to the age of eighteen years (n = 501), with sub
