The impact of slower walking speed on activities of daily living in patients with multiple sclerosis.

AIMS: To identify the relevance and impact of walking speed (WS) over a short distance on activities of daily living (ADLs) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS: An internet-administered survey of MS patients in four countries was distributed to 605 individuals in 2010. Participants had MS for > 5 years and must have reported difficulty walking as a result of MS. The impact of MS on walking and the effects of WS on ADLs were assessed based upon responses (scored on a scale of 1-10) to five questions and categorised post hoc as: high (8-10), moderate (4-7) or low (1-3) impact/impo

Development of an ambulatory device for monitoring posture change and walking speed for use in rehabilitation.

Monitoring of posture change in sagittal plane and walking speed is important for evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitation program or brace. We have developed a wearable device for monitoring human activity. However, in the previous system, there still remain several drawbacks for practical use such as accuracy in angle measurement, cumbersome cable arrangements, and so on. In order to improve these practical drawbacks, a new sensor system was designed, and its availability was evaluated. The results demonstrated that the accuracy of this system showed superior to that of the previous, and

Speed-dependent changes in the arm swing during independent walking in individuals after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Increasing one's walking speed is an important goal in post-stroke gait rehabilitation. Insufficient arm swing in people post-stroke might limit their ability to propel the body forward and increase walking speed. PURPOSE: To investigate the speed-dependent changes (and their contributing factors) in the arm swing of persons post-stroke. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-five persons post-stroke (53±12.1 years; 40.72±43.0 months post-stroke) walked on a treadmill at comfortable (0.83m/s) and fast (1.01m/s) speed. Shoulder and elbow kinematics were compared between conditions using Sta

Robust Human Gait Speed Recognition Under Non-Ideal Conditions for Suspension-Assisted Walking Systems.

Accurate gait speed estimation is vital for mobility assessment, rehabilitation monitoring, and intelligent assistive systems. However, existing methods often struggle under non-ideal conditions such as abrupt speed changes, asymmetric steps, or environmental disturbances. This study proposes a reliable framework for estimating gait speed, which integrates inertial measurement unit (IMU) signals with a hybrid deep learning model based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) networks. Six IMUs were placed on bilateral thighs, calves, and ankles

Characterizing Human Perception of Speed Differences in Walking: Insights From a Drift Diffusion Model.

Despite its central role in the proper functioning of the motor system, sensation has been less studied than motor outputs in sensorimotor adaptation paradigms. This is likely due to the difficulty of measuring sensation non-invasively: while motor outputs have easily observable consequences, sensation is inherently an internal variable of the motor system. In this study, we investigated how well participants can sense relevant sensory stimuli that induce locomotor adaptation. We addressed this question with a split-belt treadmill, which moves the legs at different speeds. We used a two-altern

Walking speed and dual task input modality impact performance on a self-paced treadmill.

Interference between a walking task (target speeds on a self-paced treadmill) and dual visual and tactile-visual response time task was investigated. Ambulatory dual-task scenarios reveal how attention is divided between walking and additional tasks, but the impact of walking speed and dual-task modality on gait characteristics and dual-task performance is unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of visual and tactile-visual dual-task on gait performance. Participants (n=15) targeted four speeds (0.5, 1.0, 1.3, and 1.5 m/s) on a self-paced treadmill with a visual speed ind

Effects of BMI on Walking Speed and Gait Biomechanics after Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

PURPOSE: History of an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and high body mass index (BMI) are strong independent risk factors for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) onset. The combination of these risk factors may further negatively affect joint loading and KOA risk. We sought to determine the combined influence of BMI and ACLR on walking speed and gait biomechanics that are hypothesized to influence KOA onset. METHODS: Walking speed and gait biomechanics (peak vertical ground reaction force [vGRF], peak vGRF instantaneous loading rate [vGRF-LR], peak knee flexion angle, knee flexion excu

Walking Speed Explains Apparent Ground Reaction Force Differences in Parkinson's Disease: A Waveform-Level SPM Analysis During Normal and Virtual Reality Walking.

BACKGROUND: Ground reaction force (GRF) alterations are reported in Parkinson's disease (PD), but most kinetic measures depend on walking speed. Since individuals with PD walk more slowly, apparent differences may reflect speed rather than disease-specific biomechanics. Virtual reality (VR) may further modify gait kinetics beyond speed effects. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether between-group differences in GRF waveforms during overground walking persist after accounting for walking speed and whether VR induces speed-independent kinetic modulation in individuals with PD. METHODS: 14 adults with

A Smartwatch Moves: The Impact of Walking Speed and Trajectories on Micro Visualizations Reading on a Smartwatch.

We describe the impact of smartwatch wearers' motion on how effectively wearers can read micro visualizations, how challenging the task feels, and how these effects relate to smartwatch orientation. Visual information on smartwatches is often consumed in dynamic contexts that involve motion such as walking or running. Motion can introduce perceptual challenges due to the way people position their smartwatch, increasing the general task load, but these effects have not been systematically studied. Therefore, we measured smartwatch viewing postures and performance data while reading visualizatio

Perception of audio-visual synchrony is modulated by walking speed and step-cycle phase.

Investigating sensory processes in active human observers is critical for a holistic understanding of perception. Recent research shows that locomotion can rhythmically alter visual detection performance, illustrating how natural behaviours influence sensory processing. Here, we tested whether the speed and phase of locomotion also modulate temporal perception, focusing on the perceived synchrony of supra-threshold audio-visual stimuli. Participants made synchrony judgements over a range of stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) while walking at either slow or natural walking speeds. Slow walking

Effect of walking speed on gait parameters in individuals with myotonic dystrophy type 1.

BACKGROUND: Myotonic dystrophy type 1 is a prevalent inherited muscular dystrophy in adults, affecting distal muscles. This leads to significant gait deviations and reduced walking speed, impacting overall well-being and increasing fall risk. This study aimed to assess how walking speed affects gait kinematics in individuals with myotonic dystrophy type 1. METHODS: Eighteen individuals with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (4 women, age: 41.0 [35.5; 47.8] years, mass: 76.8 [67.1; 94.6] kg, height: 166.0 [156.7; 173.3] cm) participated in this study.
