The effective management of the 33 million children with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) is key to reducing childhood morbidity and mortality. In this review, we aim to evaluate the effectiveness of specially formulated foods (SFFs) compared to non-food-based approaches to manage MAM in children >6 months old. We conducted a search on ten databases until 23 August 2021 and included five studies, covering 3387 participants. Meta-analysis of four studies comparing SFFs to counselling or standard of care showed that SFFs likely increase recovery rate, reduce non-response, and may improve weight

The national incidence of colorectal cancer is increasing in people younger than 50 years old. Although diagnostic colonoscopy is detecting more sporadic adenomas in young adults, there are no guidelines for post-polypectomy surveillance. The aim of this review was to survey the medical literature on the prevalence of sporadic adenomas in young adults, subsequent risk of metachronous neoplasia, and lastly to provide several concluding recommendations for clinical practice. We found that the prevalence of sporadic adenomas in young adults is greater than initially estimated and dependent upon f

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cancer cachexia represents a critical problem in clinical oncology due to its negative impact on patients' quality of life, therapeutic tolerance and survival. This paraneoplasic condition is characterized by significant weight loss mainly from skeletal muscle wasting. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer cachexia is urgent in order to develop and apply efficient therapeutic strategies.
RECENT FINDINGS: Mitochondrial dysfunction is an early event in cancer-induced muscle wasting. Decreased ability for ATP synthesis, impaired mitochondrial biogenesis, inc

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to formulate a product (microbicide mixture) that could slow down the bacterial proliferation during the storage of household waste. We used harmless and natural components, known for their antimicrobial properties, in the liquid phase at direct contact with the microbes. The antimicrobial activity of the microbicide mixture formulated was evaluated over a range of concentration in two types of tests, in the liquid and in the gas phase. Once the efficacy of antimicrobial agent in the liquid phase in direct contact with the microbe (Escherichia coli) was co

Thermal processes are now the benchmark for the destruction of some waste whose toxicity requires special attention and management. Over many years the Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique (French atomic energy commission) has developed technologies to process radioactive waste containing many metals together with chlorine, and thus with a major risk of producing volatile chlorides with potentially catastrophic effects on plant facilities. To mitigate these difficulties in an incineration process for radioactive waste contaminated by plutonium (IRIS), the CEA has investigated the processes by whi

BACKGROUND: Biomedical waste management (BMWM) in health care facilities is important for public health, environmental protection and regulatory compliance. Most of the surveys conducted to know the ground level practices and challenges are not able to fully understand the true reality in hospitals. The primary objective of this study is to conduct a thematic analysis of the provided focused group discussion (FGD) transcripts obtained from the discussions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted FGD related to BMWM across four zones in India from 2023 to 2024 as part of a national workshop series

Biomedical waste (BMW) management is a crucial aspect of both human and veterinary healthcare to prevent environmental contamination and transmission of infectious diseases. Veterinary BMW, although often overlooked, comprises hazardous materials such as infectious waste, sharps, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, radioactive substances, and pathological remains. Despite its significant contribution to hazardous waste, veterinary BMW often lacks sufficient regulatory focus and compliance. Various countries have implemented regulatory frameworks, including India's Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules (2

Background Biomedical waste management (BMWM) is an essential component of infection prevention and occupational safety within healthcare settings. While existing studies have largely focused on knowledge, compliance, and technical aspects of BMWM, limited evidence exists regarding the emotional experiences of healthcare workers (HCWs) involved in biomedical waste handling. Objective This study aimed to explore the emotional experiences of HCWs involved in BMWM and examine emotional responses across different BMWM workflow stages and HCW cadres. Methods An exploratory qualitative study was con

This study assesses cyanide and cyanidation wastes management practices among small, medium and large-scale gold leaching plants in Siaya County, Kenya. The socio-economic benefits of gold extraction through cyanidation of mercury-contaminated tailings notwithstanding, the study establishes inadequate cyanide and cyanidation wastes management practices which could potentially cause significant environmental and human health impacts. Through structured key-informant interviews with operators from 15 selected gold leaching plants of varying scales of operation, along with field observations, and

BACKGROUND: YouTube has become a major source of educational content in healthcare, including topics related to dentistry and public health. However, the accuracy and educational reliability of videos addressing healthcare waste management relevant to dental practice remain uncertain. Therefore, the aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the educational quality, credibility, and reliability of YouTube videos addressing healthcare waste management with relevance to dental practice, using the Global Quality Scale (GQS), Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark crit

Municipal solid waste (MSW) valorization is constrained by the mismatch between heterogeneous feedstock properties and the operating requirements of individual conversion technologies. This review synthesizes integrated thermochemical and biochemical pathways and treats MSW valorization as a system design problem organized around carbon cascading, in which each carbon fraction is routed to the process able to convert it and performance is governed by interactions between processes rather than by individual process yields. Four hybrid routes are examined: gasification-syngas fermentation, pyrol

INTRODUCTION: Poor solid waste management occurs when household owners fail to properly segregate, store, and dispose of waste at unauthorized dumping sites or in open fields throughout the town. This negligence leads to environmental pollution, water contamination, and adverse health effects in developing urban areas. The 3Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle) are fundamental principle in solid waste management. They aim to minimize waste by decreasing resource consumption (reduce), encouraging the repeated use of items (reuse), and transforming waste into new products or energy (recycle). Therefor

Although healthcare waste management (HCWM) legislations prevail in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), there appears a prominent gap in standalone pharmaceutical waste management (PWM) legislation making harmonization of PWM challenging in the region. This review is aimed to comprehensively overview the PWM-related legislations in ASEAN, comprising of 10 economically rising countries in Southeast Asia. The relevant regulatory documents, that were promulgated till August 31, 2024 and that were in English or officially translated in English, were extracted from PubMed/Medline, Scopu

Many low-income developing countries struggle with waste collection and the development of disposal facilities, leading to issues such as illegal dumping and poor enforcement of waste management regulations. The pollution caused by street vendors' waste is particularly evident in the central business districts of cities in developing nations. The informal economy, which includes activities such as street vending has become prevalent in developing countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) nations. This study aims to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing literature

BACKGROUND: Healthcare waste is produced from various therapeutic procedures performed in hospitals, such as chemotherapy, dialysis, surgery, delivery, resection of gangrenous organs, autopsy, biopsy, injections, etc. These result in the production of non-hazardous waste (75-95%) and hazardous waste (10-25%), such as sharps, infectious, chemical, pharmaceutical, radioactive waste, and pressurized containers (e.g., inhaler cans). Improper healthcare waste management may lead to the transmission of hepatitis B, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
METHODS: This evaluation of waste

Surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR) generates waste emulsions containing persistent chlorinated organic compounds (COCs) and surfactants which pose serious environmental challenges. This study evaluates the electrochemical oxidation of actual SEAR waste emulsions from lindane production using boron-doped diamond (BDD) and mixed-metal-oxide (MMO) anodes as sustainable treatment options. The degradation of 26 target COCs, total organic carbon (TOC) removal, toxicity reduction, and residual surfactant capacity (SC) were comparatively assessed to balance pollutant abatement and resource

BACKGROUND: Biomedical waste management is an essential element of hospital infection control, particularly in Ayurveda facilities where panchakarma procedures generate diverse and potentially infectious waste. Despite its significance, there is absence of standardized tools to comprehensively measure the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of healthcare workers in this field. Hence the present research work aims to design and validate a questionnaire that is crucial to capture accurate, comparable data, identify knowledge gaps, and guide targeted training or policy interventions.
