Water Cooperativity Impacts Aromatic Interactions in the Aggregation of Benzene with Water.

The interactions between water and aromatic rings are pervasive across various scientific and technological disciplines, including biochemistry, materials science, and environmental chemistry. In this study, we combine broadband rotational spectroscopy and quantum-chemical calculations to reveal detailed structural and binding motifs in the aggregation of benzene, as the prototypical aromatic molecule, in the presence of a few water molecules. The benzene dimer and trimer structures with up to two water molecules are conclusively identified through isotopic substitution. We observe that the π-

The effect of water filter pitchers on the mineral concentration of tap water.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of water filter pitchers on the concentration of different minerals in tap water. METHODS: Nine water filter pitchers (A-I) were chosen based on consumer preferences and Amazon reviews. Each filter was tested for its ability to modify the concentrations of fluoride, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium in tap water. Tap water samples were collected before and after filtration, at various intervals (1, 5, 10, 30, 50, 75, and 100 L) during filtration, and analyzed using an ion-specific electrode (fluoride) and atomic absorption spectrometry (other mine

Experimental and theoretical studies on the dynamic landing of water striders on water.

As a species of insects living on water, water striders jump from the water surface to avoid predation and then steadily land without piercing the surface. This spectacular property has attracted extensive interests since it provides bio-inspirations for designing functional microrobots moving on water. In this work, we investigate the landing dynamics of water striders by using artificial striders with different masses and leg lengths. It is found that once a water strider has landed, it oscillates on the water surface and the amplitude decays gradually, triggering a sequence of surface waves

National trends in pesticides in drinking water and water sources in Japan.

Although agricultural activities-especially paddy rice cultivation-are prominent in watersheds in Asian countries, few comprehensive studies have examined pesticide concentrations in water in these areas. Here, we report the concentrations of 162 pesticides in treated drinking water and source water (14,076 samples) in Japan, where rice cultivation is common, along with trends in sales of herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides from 1963 to 2016. Herbicides and fungicides-especially those used in rice farming were frequently detected in drinking water sources. The herbicide bromobutide, which

Water Quality as a Predictor of Legionella Positivity of Building Water Systems.

Testing drinking water systems for the presence of Legionella colonization is a proactive approach to assess and reduce the risk of Legionnaires' disease. Previous studies suggest that there may be a link between Legionella positivity in the hot water return line or certain water quality parameters (temperature, free chlorine residual, etc.) with distal site Legionella positivity. It has been suggested that these measurements could be used as a surrogate for testing for Legionella in building water systems. We evaluated the relationship between hot water return line Legionella positivity and o

[Salt and water loads and water-sodium metabolism in patients with hypertension].

Thirty-seven subjects including 29 patients with essential hypertension (8 with labile and 21 with stable disease patterns) and 8 controls received salt and water loads. Sodium chloride was administered per os at a rate of 0.12-0.22 g bw, water at a rate of 20 ml bw. Before loads the measurements were taken of the total water content in the body and of the total metabolic sodium. Radiocardiography was employed to study the central hemodynamics. After sodium chloride load BP measurements were taken over 2 h, within the first 45 min every other 5 to 10 min. Sodium excretion with urine was measur

Evaluating the Resilience of Drinking Water Systems to Severe Weather Events Using Boil Water Notices and Bottled Water Sales.

Increasing weather-driven disruptions to water supplies have raised growing concerns about the resilience of drinking water infrastructure and equitable access to safe drinking water during severe weather events. This study seeks to address gaps in evaluating and understanding the resilience of community water systems (CWSs) to severe weather events at regional scales, including both the physical infrastructure and population served. We developed an approach that combines boil water notice (BWN) occurrence and duration as a metric of CWS performance and bottled water sales to capture community

Hydroxyl-terminated carbosilane dendrimer films at water-toluene and water-air interfaces.

We report a fully atomistic molecular dynamics study of fourth-generation amphiphilic carbosilane dendrimers adsorbed at water-toluene and water-air interfaces across a wide range of surface densities. The dendrimers, featuring a tetrafunctional silicon core, trifunctional =Si(CH3)- branching units, and terminal hydroxyl groups, adopt a characteristic "umbrella" conformation at low coverage, with hydrophilic termini anchored in water and the hydrophobic core aligned with the nonpolar phase. Interfacial chemistry fundamentally modulates this architecture: favorable toluene-core interactions pro

Confining a Single Water Molecule Through Molecular Crystal Engineering for Water Oxidation.

Hydrogen-bonded water clusters (H2O)n obscure the intrinsic reactivity of monomeric H2O (n = 1) by restricting molecular reorientation. Elucidating the catalytic behavior of isolated water remains a key challenge in aqueous-phase chemistry. Here, we address this by designing a molecular crystal that uniformly confines single water molecules in identical tetrahedral cavities. This platform, CB-H2O, exhibits exceptional activity for photocatalytic H2O-to-H2O2 conversion, achieving 7.03 mmol g- 1 h- 1 with pure water, representing an 11.6-fold enhancement over cavity-deficient controls and being

Sewage intrusion into drinking water distribution systems: implications for water resource management.

Sewage infiltration of drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) is a major challenge for global water resource management, exacerbated by outdated infrastructure and rising water pressure. According to studies, even small sewage intrusion can result in major microbiological changes, such as appreciable increases in bacterial biomass, bacterial diversity, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition. These changes intensify the risk of waterborne infections and complicate treatment procedures required for ensuring safe drinking water. The present work is a review/state of science that synth

Identifying drinking water safety hazards throughout an Arctic community's water supply system.

Arctic communities, ecosystems, and infrastructure are increasingly coming under scrutiny due to ongoing attempts at decolonization and reconciliation with Indigenous groups and the potential for geopolitical conflict in the region. There is also increased attention to the region from various industries because of its economic potential, especially as climate change allows for increased access for development. This increase in attention has highlighted the lack of understanding about drinking water sources and infrastructure in the Arctic. In this study we conducted extensive water quality mon

Climate Change Is Altering Ecosystem Water Use Efficiency in Water-Limited Ecosystems.

Dryland ecosystems are expected to expand globally as a result of rising atmospheric water demand and vapor pressure deficit. However, the nature and magnitude of how water-limited ecosystems are adapting to increases in aridity is unclear. Here we examine changes in ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE), defined as the ratio of gross primary productivity (GPP) to evapotranspiration (ET), in global water-limited regions over the past two decades. Our analysis uses remotely sensed data, process-based models, and reanalysis datasets to quantify changes in WUE and examine the role that changes in

Spontaneous Formation of Uniform Cell-Sized Microgels through Water/Water Phase Separation.

In this study, a one-step method is discussed for producing uniform cell-sized microgels using glass capillaries filled with a binary polymer blend of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and gelatin. Upon decreasing temperature, phase separation of the PEG/gelatin blends and gelation of gelatin occur, and then the polymer blend forms linearly aligned, uniformly sized gelatin microgels in the glass capillary. When DNA is added to the polymer solution, gelatin microgels entrapping DNA are spontaneously formed, and the DNA prevents the coalescence of the microdroplets even at temperatures above the melting

Evidence for water ridges at oil-water interfaces: implications for ion transport.

Understanding ion transport across interfaces is of fundamental importance in many processes such as liquid-liquid extraction, phase transfer catalysis, enhanced oil recovery and emulsion stabilisation. However, the factors that control ion transport across interfaces are poorly known due to a lack of knowledge of structural changes at interfaces. We studied here the effects of ionic concentration and external force on the transport of ions across the decane-water interface using classical molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the evolution of interfacial structures during ion

Diurnal variation in water homeostasis among schizophrenic patients subject to water intoxication.

Among seven schizophrenic patients subject to water intoxication (six men and one woman, mean age 39.1 +/- 6.9 years), we measured serum sodium, plasma arginine vasopressin, and urine osmolality at 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. on eight consecutive Thursdays. On the days of greatest diurnal change in serum sodium, the 7 a.m. serum sodium was 141.1 +/- 1.8 mEq/l and the 4 p.m. value was 129.9 +/- 3.2 mEq/l. Plasma vasopressin also tended to be lower at 4 p.m. but, in many cases, was inadequately suppressed for the level of hyponatremia. The urine was dilute at both 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. and mean urine osmolali
