Ordinary bone wax, manufactured from beeswax, was used to stop bleeding from cancellous bone in elective surgery among seven women. Five of them had a resection of a calcaneal exostosis and bursa at the insertion of the calcaneous tendon, one underwent a resection of a medial exostosis of the first metatarsal head, and one had an acromial resection. METHODS: A 48-year-old male with axial length of 32mm underwent scleral buckling for subtotal fresh retinal detachment with 360-degree multiple lattices with superior horse shoe tear. For reconstruction of nasal defects, chondrocutaneous grafts harvested from ears are commonly used. Bone wax can be molded easily to create a three-dimensional form of the defect to be reconstructed. The mold then can be held against different parts of either ear to choose a site providing the best match of shape and size. The outline of the mold is drawn on the ear, and an appropriate chondrocutaneous graft can be easily harvested.

Syringing of the ear is one of the commonest procedures performed for cleaning cerumen from the external auditory canal. Common complications following syringing are pain, external auditory canal trauma and otitis externa. Hearing and vestibular loss are often mentioned as a complication in descriptions of this technique, but we have not been able to find a reported case of such an occurrence. We report a case of localized granuloma annulare, successfully treated with isotretinoin, which occurred as a consequence of waxing-induced pseudofolliculitis. To our knowledge this is the first reported clearance of localized granuloma annulare with isotretinoin and the first reported case of granuloma annulare as a sequel to pseudofolliculitis.

Caffeine and theobromine were identified and quantified in leaf epicuticular waxes of Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil. (Aquifoliaceae). The total epicuticular leaf wax content was ca. 0.5% on average of dry leaf weight. Epicuticular caffeine and theobromine contents varied from 0.16 to 127.6 microg/mg and from 0 to 9.5 microg/mg of wax, respectively. For some selected samples, the intracellular methylxanthine concentration was also determined. A positive correlation was found between inner and epicuticular caffeine contents.

Scald injuries caused by hot liquids are not a frequently reported cause of pediatric respiratory and alimentary tract burns. Aspiration of molten wax with subsequent pharyngeal or laryngeal burns has not been described at all, to the best of our knowledge. A case of an adolescent who presented with airway burns and atelectasis subsequent to aspiration of molten wax is herein described and discussed.

PURPOSE: We used a technique that facilitates the custom contouring of porous polyethylene implants.
METHODS: Bone was was molded in the subperiosteal space of the orbit. The wax then served as a model for free-hand sculpting of the rigid implant.
RESULTS: Bone wax templates have been used successfully in seven patients with enophthalmos or superior sulcus depression.
CONCLUSIONS: This technique has increased the precision of custom contouring subperiosteal alloplastic implants.
