A Study on Thermally Fatigued Phase Transformation and Bending Fracture Mechanisms of 310S Stainless Steel.

This study investigates the microstructural evolution and mechanical degradation mechanisms of cold-drawn 310S stainless steel subjected to repeated thermal cycling between 900 °C and room temperature. The results reveal that thermal cycling induces significant lattice distortion, dislocation accumulation, and recrystallization, leading to grain refinement and increased tensile strength. However, these microstructural changes also initiate subsurface cracks and reduce ductility. TGA analysis confirms thermal weight loss from decarburization, especially under oxidative atmospheres. Weight Regain in Formerly Obese Mice Hastens Development of Hepatic Steatosis Due to Impaired Adipose Tissue Function.

OBJECTIVE: Weight regain after weight loss is common, and there is evidence to suggest negative effects on health because of weight cycling. This study sought to investigate the impact of weight regain in formerly obese mice on adipose tissue architecture and stromal cell function. METHODS: A diet-switch model was employed for obesity induction, weight loss, and weight regain in mice. Flow cytometry quantified adipose tissue leukocytes in adipose tissue. Liver and adipose tissue depots were compared to determine tissue-specific effects of weight cycling. RESULTS: Epididymal white adipose tis

Comparing Knee Joint Load Accumulation During Cycling, Walking, and Running in Individuals With and Without Knee Osteoarthritis.

Cycling is recommended as a conservative treatment for managing knee osteoarthritis (KOA), yet direct comparisons of knee joint loading between cycling and weight-bearing locomotion are limited. This study compared fatigue-weighted cumulative knee joint loading (wCKL) across cycling, walking, and running in individuals with and without KOA. Fifty-six recreational cyclists (19 KOA, 19 age-matched controls, 18 young controls) performed cycling at nine cadence-power combinations (60/80/100 rpm × 157/210/261 W), walking at 1.4 m/s, and running at 3.0 m/s. Bike racing, recreational riding, impact sport and bone health.

Cycling has been shown to confer considerable benefits in terms of health, leading to reductions in death rates principally due to cardiovascular improvements and adaptation. Given the disparity between the benefits of cycling on cardiovascular fitness and previous research finding that cycling may not be beneficial for bone health, Hugo Olmedillas and colleagues performed a systematic review of the literature. They concluded that road cycling does not appear to confer any significant osteogenic benefit. They postulate that the cause of this is that, particularly at a competitive level, riders

Low load, high repetition resistance training program increases bone mineral density in untrained adults.

BACKGROUND: High load, low repetition resistance training increases BMD in untrained adults; however, many older and untrained adults cannot maintain this type of strenuous program. Our goal was to evaluate whether a low load, high repetition resistance training program would increase BMD in untrained adults. METHODS: Twenty sedentary, but otherwise healthy, adults (6 men and 14 women, age 28-63 yrs) completed a 27-week group exercise program. The participants were randomly assigned to one of two strength groups: one group completed full body, low load, high repetition weight training classes

Neuromodulation Through Spinal Cord Stimulation Restores Ability to Voluntarily Cycle After Motor Complete Paraplegia.

Abstract Epidural spinal cord stimulation (eSCS) of the lower thoracic spinal cord has been shown to partially restore volitional movement in patients with complete chronic spinal cord injury (cSCI). Combining eSCS with intensive locomotor training improves motor function, including standing and stepping, but many patients with cSCI suffer from long-standing muscle atrophy and loss of bone mineral density, which may prohibit safe implementation. Safe, accessible, and effective avenues for pairing neuromodulation with activity-based therapy remain unexplored. Cycling is one such option that can

Determination of maximal lactate steady state response in selected sports events.

Maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) refers to the upper limit of blood lactate concentration indicating an equilibrium between lactate production and lactate elimination during constant workload. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether different levels of MLSS may explain different blood lactate concentration (BLC) levels at submaximal workload in the sports events of rowing, cycling, and speed skating. Eleven rowers (mean +/- SD, age 20.1 +/- 1.5 yr, height 188.7 +/- 6.2 cm, weight 82.7 +/- 8.0 kg), 16 cyclists and triathletes (age 23.6 +/- 3.0 yr, height 181.4 +/- 5.6 cm, wei

Potential for compensatory exercise engagement among individuals seeking weight loss: implications for eating disorder prevention and healthy activity promotion.

Although weight loss programmes encourage exercise alongside dietary changes, some patients use exercise to compensate for perceived overeating and/or binge eating. Unlike non-compensatory exercise (which is not tied to eating or calories), this type of compensatory exercise can precipitate disordered eating, weight cycling and weight gain. Research is needed to understand the risks of compensatory exercise in weight management, and to inform interventions promoting non-compensatory exercise.

Differences in respiratory muscle activity during cycling and walking do not influence dyspnea perception in obese patients with COPD.

In patients with combined obesity and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), dyspnea intensity at matched work rates during weight-supported cycling and weight-bearing walking is similar, despite consistent metabolic differences between test modalities. The present study examined the influence of differences in activity of the diaphragm and abdominal muscles during cycling and walking on intensity and quality of dyspnea at matched ventilation in obese patients with COPD. We compared respiratory muscle activity patterns and dyspnea ratings during incremental cycle and treadmill exercise

Influence of modified starches on mental performance and physical activity following an exhaustive bout of exercise.

Slow-releasing carbohydrates may delay the effects of fatigue after exhaustive exercise. The purpose of this study was to observe the influence that hydrothermally modified starches (HMS) and traditional maltodextrin (MAL) supplements had on physical endurance and mental performance following exhaustive exercise. Male participants completed a VO2 max and 2 days of cycling sessions using a Velotron ergometer. Cycling sessions were performed at 70% of the VO2 max workload for 150 min. Supplements were consumed 30 min before cycling and during exercise at the 120-min mark (1 g CHO/kg body weight)

Development of a high-performance transtibial cycling-specific prosthesis for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: It has been reported that cycling-specific research relating to participants with an amputation is extremely limited in both volume and frequency. However, practitioners might participate in the development of cycling-specific prosthetic limbs. This technical note presents the development of a successful design of a prosthetic limb developed specifically for competitive cycling. TECHNIQUE: This project resulted in a hollow composite construction which was low in weight and shaped to reduce a rider's aerodynamic drag. DISCUSSION: The new prosthesis reduces the overall mass

Increased Postnatal Cardiac Hyperplasia Precedes Cardiomyocyte Hypertrophy in a Model of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

Rationale: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) occurs in ~0.5% of the population and is a leading cause of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in young adults. Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy has been the accepted mechanism for cardiac enlargement in HCM, but the early signaling responsible for initiating hypertrophy is poorly understood. Mutations in cardiac myosin binding protein C (MYBPC3) are among the most common HCM-causing mutations. Ablation of Mybpc3 in an HCM mouse model (cMyBP-C-/-) rapidly leads to cardiomegaly by postnatal day (PND) 9, though hearts are indistinguishable from wild-type (WT) at bir

Transient Adipose Inflammatory Remodeling during High-Dose Semaglutide-Induced Weight Loss and Regain.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss improves obesity-associated metabolic dysfunction, yet resolution of adipose inflammation may be incomplete and can reappear during weight regain. Whether high-dose semaglutide induces sustained immunological remodeling of adipose and hepatic tissues during weight cycling remains unclear. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice with diet-induced obesity were treated with semaglutide (60 nmol/kg, intraperitoneally, every 3 days) or vehicle for 3 weeks, followed by drug withdrawal under continued high-fat diet feeding. Body weight, body composition, and glucose homeostasis were asses

A comparison of ovariectomy models for estrogen studies.

Many estrogen-replacement studies use ovariectomized animals as controls. However, ovariectomy greatly increases body weight and can enhance the peripheral synthesis of estrogen. Tamoxifen is commonly used as an antiestrogen, but it may elicit mixed agonist or antagonist actions. The aim of our study was to compare vascular function in mesenteric arteries among groups of rats with low estradiol levels. The groups (n = 5, each) of Sprague-Dawley rats were cycling (diestrus), ovariectomized (OVX), OVX + tamoxifen (OVX-T), OVX + 4-hydroxyandrostene-3,17-dione, an aromatase inhibitor (OVX-A) to pr
