Influences of the position of the head on posture while lifting.

In clinical training of some lower back pain patients, teaching them to control their lumbar lordosis during lifting may be difficult. Therefore, another effective method for lifting technique is required. In standing, head cannot move without some compensating postural adjustment. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of head position on lifting posture. Fourteen healthy male volunteers (22.6 +/- 4.4 years old) lifted a case while maintaining two different head positions; a downward position and an upright position. In the upright position, activities of the latissimus dorsi

Instruction during lifting: How analogy and explicit instruction influence performance and motor control.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the effects of analogy (ANA) and explicit (EXP) verbal instruction on motor performance and muscle activation during a weightlifting task. Traditional coaching strategies often rely on explicit cues; however, recent research suggests that analogy-based instructions may offer a more efficient route to motor learning by promoting implicit control. SCOPE: Twenty novice participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (ANA, EXP, or control), with the sequence of conditions counterbalanced across three consecutive days. Day 1 involved familiarizat

Lack of predictive control in lifting series of virtual objects by individuals with diplegic cerebral palsy.

To date, research on the motor control of hand function in cerebral palsy has focused on children with hemiplegia, although many persons with diplegic cerebral palsy (dCP) have asymmetrically decreased hand function. We explored the predictive capabilities of the motor system in a simple motor task of lifting a series of virtual objects for five persons with spastic dCP and five age-matched controls. When a person lifts an object, s/he uses an expectation of the weight of the object to generate a motor command. We asked the study subjects to lift a series of increasing weights and determined w

A Novel Passive Back-Support Exoskeleton With a Spring-Cable-Differential for Lifting Assistance.

Lower back injuries are the most common work-related musculoskeletal disorders. As a wearable device, a back-support exoskeleton (BSE) can reduce the risk of lower back injuries and passive BSEs can achieve a low device weight. However, with current passive BSEs, there is a problem that the user must push against the device when lifting the leg to walk, which is perceived as particularly uncomfortable due to the resistance. To solve this problem, we propose a novel passive BSE that can automatically distinguish between lifting and walking. A unique spring-cable-differential acts as a torque ge

Bilateral anterior shoulder dislocations in bench pressing: an unusual cause.

A case of bilateral anterior glenohumeral dislocation in a young weight trainer is presented. The patient, an insurance clerk, had been using a free weight bar in the bench press position and had become tired when the weight on the bar forced his arms into hyperextension in the mid-abducted position. The humeral shaft gradually pivoted on the bench and the humeral heads were slowly dislocated anteriorly by the weight of the bar. Simple closed reduction under sedation was performed and there were no complications. After six weeks in bilateral broad arm slings, with pendulum exercises from two w

Correlation between nipple elevation and breast resection weight: How to preoperatively plan breast reduction.

Breast hypertrophy is often associated with functional limitations. Beyond the aesthetic concerns, breast reduction can improve symptoms and self-esteem. In different countries, health-care system regulations have fixed the threshold for reimbursement in 500 g of predicted tissue resection for each breast. Different preoperative measurements have been proposed to predict breast-tissue weight to be removed, showing a variable correlation with post-operative evaluation. We describe a reliable, simple measurement to predict the quantity of breast reduction in grams, which can be applicable to any

Inadequate lumbar protection with load weight limits based on body weight percentages: An experimental and simulation study of the weight limits set by the Japanese guidelines for preventing low back pain.

Work-related low back pain is the most prevalent occupational disease in Japan, with 25% of cases resulting from manual handling of heavy loads. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan has issued guidelines limiting load weights based on the worker's body weight percentage: 40% of the body weight for males and 24% for females. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of these weight limits in preventing excessive lower back strain and identify potential shortcomings. A total of 20 healthy participants (10 males and 10 females) were included in this study. The motions of the pa

[C-type scaphoid fracture in a elite power lifting].

Power lifting injuries most often involve shoulder injuries with an injury rate of 0.57 to 0.71/1000 hours of power lifting. Wrist injuries are less common in power lifters with 0.05/1000 hours exposure vs. 0.23/1000 h in elite weight lifting men. Often, two contributing factors causing wrist injuries are encountered: a) loss of balance causing the barbell to drift back behind the head of the power lifter, which hyperextends the wrist and b) the maximal weight. We report on an elite power lifting athlete preparing for the World Masters Bench press championships suffering two months of persisti

Partial Arm Weight Support Does Not Hamper the Weight Perception of Haptically-Rendered Virtual Objects: A Psychophysics Study.

Arm weight support (AWS) from upper-limb exoskeletons aids training by reducing fatigue and increasing the movement workspace, especially in people with acquired brain injury (ABI). Simultaneously, task-specific training could be enabled via haptic rendering, simulating the interaction forces with tangible virtual objects. However, how AWS affects somatosensory perception, such as the perception of the weight of haptically rendered virtual objects, is unclear. We therefore conducted a psychophysics experiment with 40 participants investigating the effect of partial AWS on virtual object weight

The role of back muscle endurance, maximum force, balance and trunk rotation control regarding lifting capacity.

Evaluation of lifting capacity is widely used as a reliable instrument in order to evaluate maximal and safe lifting capacity. This is of importance in regard to planning rehabilitation programs and determining working ability. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of basic functions on the lifting capacity measured by the progressive isoinertial lifting evaluation (PILE) and the functional capacity evaluation (FCE) tests in a lower (floor to waist) and an upper (waist to shoulder) setting and compare the two test constructs. Seventy-four female subjects without acute low back

Adaptive changes in control of the head while lifting ten times.

We often observe when workers lift objects, they tend to move their heads upward and back. Their movement may be an efficient habit, but little is known about control of the head while lifting. Our primary aim was to investigate the hypothesis that several repetitive liftings would lead to an increase in neck extension. Fifteen healthy male volunteers (20.9 +/- 0.8 years old) were asked to lift a case 10 times without instructions about the starting posture or lifting technique. Motion data and electromyography (EMG) signals were continuously recorded. The lifting time, angles of joints, and d

Recurrent Median Nerve Injury in a Weight Lifter.

Recurrent median neuropathy is an uncommon injury that can be commonly mistaken for other pathological causes. It is important to be aware of the potential causes and symptoms of injury as delay in diagnosis can lead to permanent decrease in hand function and disability. This case is a description of a 33-year-old male patient who previously presented with radicular symptoms and had complete resolution of his pain after a C7 selective nerve root block. Several months after presentation, he developed significant thenar atrophy, localized pain, and weakness associated with weight lifting activit

Acute rhabdomyolysis due to body building exercise. Report of a case.

A 40 year old man presented with severe muscle (biceps) pain and rhabdomyolysis following a session of weight lifting. He denied use of anabolic steroids or other drugs. Total serum creatine kinase was 76,080 IU/l. The patient was treated with intravenous sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and mannitol. He did not develop renal failure and his symptoms resolved after two weeks. Cases of rhabdomyolysis associated with other forms of excessive physical exertion are commonly reported, however cases associated with weight lifting are reported relatively infrequently. Probably many cases in this

Commercially marketed supplements for bodybuilding athletes.

We conducted a survey of 624 commercially available supplements targeted towards bodybuilding athletes. Over 800 performance claims were made for these supplements. Supplements include amino acids, boron, carnitine, choline, chromium, dibencozide, ferulic acid, gamma oryzanol, medium chain triglycerides, weight gain powders, Smilax compounds and yohimbine. Many performance claims advertised were not supported by published research studies. In some instances, we found no research to validate the claims; in other cases, research findings were extrapolated to inappropriate applications. For examp
