Effects of plants on the removal of hexavalent chromium in wetland sediments.

The effect of two wetland plants, Typha latifolia L. (cattail) and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud (common reed), on the fate of Cr(VI) in wetland sediments was investigated using greenhouse bench-scale microcosm experiments. The removal of Cr(VI) was monitored based on the vertical profiles of aqueous Cr(VI) in the sediments. The Cr(VI) removal rates were estimated taking into account plant transpiration, which was found to significantly concentrate dissolved species in the sediments. After correcting for evapotranspiration, the actual Cr(VI) removal rates were significantly higher

Sources of methylmercury to a wetland-dominated lake in northern Wisconsin.

Several lines of evidence suggest that wetlands may be a major source of methylmercury (MeHg) to receiving waters, perhaps explaining the strong correlation between concentrations of waterborne MeHg and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in regions such as northern Wisconsin. We evaluated the relative importance of wetland export in the MeHg budget of a wetland-dominated lake in northern Wisconsin using mass balance. Channelized runoff from a large headwater wetland was the major source of water and total mercury (HgT) to the lake during the study period. The wetland also exported MeHg in high con

Phosphorus cycling in wetland soils: the importance of phosphate diesters.

Productivity in P limited peatlands is regulated in part by the turnover of organic phosphates, which is influenced by the chemical nature of the compounds involved. We used solution 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to quantify organic and inorganic phosphates in benthic floc (a mixture of plant detritus and algae) and underlying soil from sites along P gradients in hard water and soft water areas of the northern Florida Everglades, USA. Phosphorus-enriched sites were dominated by cattail (Typha spp.), while unenriched sites included sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense Crantz) ridges

Transport and fate of trifluoroacetate in upland forest and wetland ecosystems.

Although trifluoroacetate (TFA), a breakdown product of chlorofluorocarbon replacements, is being dispersed widely within the biosphere, its ecological fate is largely unknown. TFA was added experimentally to an upland, northern hardwood forest and to a small forest wetland ecosystem within the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire. Inputs of TFA were not transported conservatively through these ecosystems; instead, significant amounts of TFA were retained within the vegetation and soil compartments. More TFA was retained by the wetland ecosystem than by the upland forest ecosyste

[Key processes and influencing mechanisms of lateral carbon exchange in coastal wetlands.].

Coastal wetlands are crucial "blue carbon" ecosystems. Previous studies primarily focus on vertical carbon sequestration in carbon sink assessments, often overlooking the key pathway of lateral carbon exchange. We systematically reviewed the biogeochemical transformation processes, key measurement methods, and driving mechanisms of key components in lateral carbon exchange (dissolved inorganic carbon, dissolved organic carbon, and particulate organic carbon) in coastal wetlands. Compared to vertical carbon burial rates, lateral carbon export rates in coastal wetlands are higher, with no differ

Unraveling the activity of phage-carrying antibiotic resistance genes in constructed wetlands.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global public health challenge, and risk assessments based solely on gene abundance often underestimate the immediacy of resistance dissemination. This study presented a carrier-centric framework integrating metagenomic and metatranscriptomic profiling with deep learning-based identification of mobile genetic elements, applied to a full-scale constructed wetland (CW). CW overall reduced ARG burdens, with genomic abundance in plants, sediments, and water decreasing by 98.5%, 80.9%, and 88.8%, respectively. However, transcriptional activity showed an opposite

Carbon Cycling in Wetlands Under the Shadow of Microplastics: Challenges and Prospects.

Wetlands are one of the most crucial ecosystems for regulating carbon sequestration and mitigating global climate change. However, the disturbance to carbon dynamics caused by microplastics (MPs) in wetlands cannot be overlooked. This review explores the impacts of MPs on the carbon cycles within wetland ecosystems, focusing on the underlying physicochemical and microbial mechanisms. The accumulation of MPs in wetland sediments can severely destabilize plant root functions, disrupting water, nutrient, and oxygen transport, thereby reducing plant biomass development. Although MPs may temporaril

Assessment of fire resilience in subtropical wetlands using high spatial resolution images.

Resilience is the ability of a system to absorb disturbances, rearrange itself, and adapt in order to maintain its functionality, structure, identity, and feedback. Research involving fire resilience in subtropical wetlands (SW) allows us to understand the dynamics of these ecosystems, measure impacts on fauna and flora, and promote policies for the management and protection. The aim of the present study is to assess the fire resilience of SW. The study was divided into three steps: (i) burned area classification, (ii) vegetation pattern classification, and (iii) temporal analysis of SW fire r

Pervasive Pesticide Contamination of Wetlands in the Great Barrier Reef Catchment Area.

Knowledge of the types and impacts of contaminants occurring in the freshwater wetlands of the Great Barrier Reef catchment area (GBRCA) is limited. The present study examined the presence and concentrations of pesticides occurring in 22 floodplain wetlands, situated in moderate to high-intensity land uses in the GBRCA. The dominant land use within 1 km of the wetlands was sugar cane for 12 wetlands, grazing for 6 wetlands, plantation forestry and conservation for 2 wetlands, and one with an equal mix of land uses. Fifty-nine pesticides and pesticide degradates were detected in the wetlands du

Enhancing wastewater remediation by drinking water treatment residual-augmented floating treatment wetlands.

In this study, the involvement of aluminum-based drinking water treatment residual (DWTR) as substrate in floating treatment wetland (FTW) to enhance its treatment performance was firstly proposed and trialed. A laboratory scale DWTR-FTW fed with synthetic wastewater containing COD, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and mineral salts was operated in three stages of unplanted (1-30 days), planted (31-60 days) and aerated (61-135 days) modes. The results showed that the average removal rates of COD, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) in stage 3 were 88%, 85%, and 90.2%, respectively, indicati

Research advances in using constructed wetlands to remove pesticides in agricultural runoff.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) performs excellently in removing pollutants from agricultural runoff, and thus have been widely used as an effective measure to control agricultural runoff pollution. Based on reviews on domestic and overseas literature, we introduced the current situation of water bodies polluted by pesticides. The removal mechanisms of pesticides by CWs were elucidated according to physical, chemical and biological processes, and the main processes were discussed in detail. The removal efficiency of pesticides in CWs vary greatly with pesticide types. Based on their uses, the avera

Phthalates have been shown to cause endocrine disruption in laboratory animals and are associated with altered development of the reproductive system in humans. Further, human have significant exposure to phthalates. However, little is known concerning the exposure of wildlife to phthalates. We report urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations from fifty juvenile alligators from three Florida lakes and a site in the Everglades. Urinary phthalate monoester concentrations varied widely among alligators from the different sites but also among alligators from the same site. Mono-2-ethylhexy phtha

Bird migration routes and risk for pathogen dispersion into western Mediterranean wetlands.

Wild birds share with humans the capacity for moving fast over large distances. During migratory movements, birds carry pathogens that can be transmitted between species at breeding, wintering, and stopover places where numerous birds of various species are concentrated. We consider the area of the Camargue (southern France) as an example to highlight how ad hoc information already available on birds' movements, abundance, and diversity can help assess the introduction and transmission risk for birdborne diseases in the western Mediterranean wetlands. Avian influenza and West Nile viruses are

Enhancing phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands with ochre from mine drainage treatment.

No single end-use has yet been identified that is capable of consuming the projected production of ochre (mainly iron (III) oxides) from mine drainage treatment. However, the high sorption capacity of ochre for phosphorus (up to 26 mg kg(-1)) means that it could be used in constructed wetlands to enhance phosphorus removal. Laboratory batch experiments showed that coarse-grained ochre removes 90% of all phosphorus forms from sewage effluent after 15 minutes of shaking. From a larger-scale experiment, it is estimated that constructed wetlands with an ochre substrate should remove phosphorus fro

Antioxidant collapse and microbial metabolic shift underlie perfluorooctanoic acid toxicity in constructed wetlands.

With the increasing accumulation of emerging pollutants in environment, their associated ecological risks have drawn growing attention. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a typical persistent pollutant, is widely distributed in wastewater treatment processes and lacks effective removal methods, posing potential threats to the ecological functions of constructed wetland (CW) systems. This study constructed four vertical subsurface flow CWs, which were continuously operated for 100 days under low (0.1 mg/L), medium (1 mg/L), and high (10 mg/L) PFOA concentrations to systematically investigate their

Restoring riparian wetlands for carbon and nitrogen benefits and other critical ecosystem functions.

With global warming intensifying, freshwater wetland restoration is becoming an increasingly important natural climate solution. Yet, restoration efforts for climate benefits have mostly focused on peatlands due to their high carbon storage capacities. Nevertheless, restoration often results in substantial methane emissions, complicating the climate benefits of restoration. Contrastingly, the climate benefits of restoring non-peat wetlands remain largely unexplored. We investigated the short- and long-term effects of restoring riparian wetlands to reinstate critical carbon dynamics and other e

Modeling long-term dynamics of carbon dioxide and oxygen in high-altitude wetlands.

Altiplanic wetlands are located above 3000 m.a.s.l. in endorheic basins in South America. Extreme environmental conditions and great ecological value characterize these systems. However, they are threatened because they host great mineralogical wealth. In addition, climate change could impact these environments, unbalancing water cycles and biochemical processes. High-altitude wetlands play a key role in recycling greenhouse gasses through microbial activity, which can alter the effects of meteorological forcings. To analyze these effects, we constructed a transient 0-D model that simulates in

Impacts of Sea Level Rise on Danish Coastal Wetlands - a GIS-based Analysis.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scenarios run by an ensemble of models developed by the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) projects an average sea level rise (SLRs) of 0.6 to 1.2 m for the low and high emission scenarios (SSP1-1.9, SSP5-8.5), during the next century (IPCC 2021). The coastal zone will experience an increase in the flooding of terrestrial habitats and the depth of marine productive areas, with potential negative consequences for these ecosystems. The coast in Denmark is highly modified due to anthropogenic uses. Dikes, dams, and other coastal infrastru
