Access to maintenance and repair services for wheelchairs: a qualitative study of multi-stakeholder perspectives.

PURPOSE: Wheelchair maintenance and repair services are critical for sustaining mobility, independence, and participation in daily activities. However, systemic inefficiencies, policy constraints, and workforce shortages contribute to prolonged repair delays, negatively impacting users' quality of life. While previous research primarily focused on individual stakeholder experiences, few studies have examined the perspectives of multiple groups simultaneously. This study builds on that work by integrating diverse viewpoints to uncover barriers and propose strategies to enhance service accessibi

Wheelchair Neuroprosthesis for Improving Dynamic Trunk Stability.

Trunk instability is a major problem for individuals with thoracic and cervical spinal cord injury. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) neuroprosthesis, a technology that uses small electrical currents to artificially contract muscles, has previously been utilized to improve trunk stability during quasi-static and dynamic sitting. The aim of this paper was to develop the first powered wheelchair-based neuroprosthesis and to test its feasibility for improving trunk stability. Eleven male, able-bodied individuals participated in the feasibility study. While participants were seated, the whee

Effects of camber on the ergonomics of propulsion in wheelchair athletes.

PURPOSE: to examine the effects of rear-wheel camber on the physiological and biomechanical responses during manual wheelchair propulsion in highly trained wheelchair athletes. METHODS: participants (N = 14) pushed on a motorized treadmill (2.2 m·s, 0.7% gradient) in four standardized camber conditions (15°, 18°, 20°, and 24°). Standardization was achieved by controlling seat height, the distance between top dead center of the main wheels and "toe-in toe-out" across all camber settings. Power output (PO) and cardiorespiratory measures were collected for each camber setting. Three-dimensional

Wheelchair-bound residents in nursing facilities: the basics.

More than 70% of nursing home residents spend at least part of their day in wheelchairs. Ideally, each resident would be fitted for his or her own wheelchair. A well-fitted chair can improve mobility, safety, and comfort. Wheelchairs that are ill fitting, however, can cause or exacerbate medical problems. These include posture-related complications like poor breathing or dysphagia, falls, pressure sores, and several other conditions. Pharmacists who are involved with quality improvement activities can make wheelchair use and selection a priority, improving care for wheelchair-bound residents.

The effect of seat position on wheelchair propulsion biomechanics.

This study examined the effect of seat position on handrim biomechanics. Thirteen experienced users propelled a wheelchair over a smooth level floor at a self-selected speed. Kinetic and temporal-distance data were collected with the use of an instrumented rim and a motion analysis system. A custom-designed axle was used to change the seat position. We used repeated measures analysis of variance to evaluate if differences existed in the temporal-distance and kinetic data with change in seat position. Results showed that a shorter distance between the axle and shoulder (low seat height) improve

Analysis of vibrations induced during wheelchair propulsion.

Little is known about how dynamic acceleration affects wheelchair-rider comfort. The current study was to test both the operation of an instrumented wheelchair by a wheelchair user over a Simulated Road Course (SRC) and the operation of the same instrumented wheelchair during normal daily activities (a field test) by test subjects. Sixteen subjects participated in the protocol. A SRC allowed collection of data from wheelchair users traversing obstacles similar to those experienced by a typical wheelchair user. The SRC consisted of eight obstacles fixed rigidly to a flat concrete surface. The f

Effect of push frequency on the economy of wheelchair racers.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to examine the effect of varying push frequency on pushing economy (oxygen uptake at a given speed). METHODS: Eight male wheelchair racers completed a series of exercise bouts on a wheelchair ergometer (Bromking Turbo Trainer, Bromakin, UK) at 6.58 m x s(-1). Initially, subjects self-selected their freely chosen push frequency (FCF); this was followed by 4 random trials pushing at 60, 80, 120, and 140% of this FCF. Steady state VO2 was determined using Douglas bags, and heart rate was recorded by telemetry. After each condition, a small capillary blood sample

Structural anthropometric measurements for wheelchair mobile adults.

Structural anthropometric measurements for males and females were determined for the wheelchair mobile adults. A photogrammetry methodology was used to obtain the measurements. The various subject demographics including age, level or type of dysfunction as well as the specified anthropometric dimensions of the wheelchair mobile subjects were identified. The data would be useful for the design of industrial workstations for wheelchair mobile adults. Present workstation design principles based on seated able-bodied anthropometric measurements would not be suitable for this population.

Validity of power output estimation for wheelchair locomotion.

The purpose of this study was to validate an in-field method of estimating power output (PO) requirements for manual wheelchair (WC) locomotion. PO was calculated from the average force required to push a WC and its occupant over level tile and low pile carpeted surfaces multiplied by the locomotive velocity (3 km.hr-1). Average pushing force was determined by a strain-gauge transducer and an electronic integrator. Ten male volunteers (wt in WC = 73 -96 kg) were found to require PO levels ranging from 38 to 63 kpm.h4-1 and 98 to 135 kpm.min-1 for WC locomotion on the tiled and carpeted surface
