[A case of motor neuron disease with IgM gammopathy which showed anti-cerebrum antibody].

A patient, 50-year-old female, developed progressive weakness of lower extremities, and gait disturbance for 2 years. Neurological examination revealed hyperreflexia with pathological reflex, fasciculation in the limbs and tongue, muscle weakness and atrophy in distal limbs, but no sensory disturbance. Needle EMG showed neurogenic findings compatible with motor neuron disease (MND). Laboratory data showed polyclonal IgM hyperimmunoglobulinemia, positive several autoimmune antibodies including antisingle strand DNA antibody (Ab), ENAab, SS-A ab and RA. There were no antibodies for gangliosides

Complete deltoid resection in early childhood without muscle transfer results in normal shoulder function at long-term follow-up: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal tumors involving the deltoid muscle and necessitating its complete resection are rare. The function after complete deltoid resection is reported to be limited, and several authors consider muscle transfer to improve shoulder motion. However, it still remains unclear whether such transfer adds function. To the best of our knowledge, all reports on complete deltoid resection refer to adult patients, and it is unknown what function results after deltoid resection in childhood. The remaining muscles may have the potential to compensate for the loss of deltoid function.

Menkes disease diagnosed by a novel ATP7A frameshift mutation in a patient with infantile spasms-a case report.

Menkes disease (MD) is a rare congenital copper deficiency disease caused by an adenosine triphosphatase copper transporting alpha (ATP7A) gene mutation. It is a progressive and systemic disease that primarily involves the central nervous system and connective tissues. The clinical manifestation of these patients with MD is curly hair, progressive muscle tone reduction, and convulsions, and often leads to death in early infancy. Herein, we present a case of a 9-month-old Chinese male who displayed developmental regression, followed by convulsions, which were characterized by infantile spasms (

Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy: diagnosis by rectal biopsy.

A 14-year-old girl with the mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalopathy syndrome had an 8-year history of intestinal pseudoobstruction with abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, gastric and duodenal dilatation, and duodenal diverticulosis. The child appeared chronically malnourished and had severe growth failure. Multisystem involvement was evident with the presence of ptosis, external ophthalmoplegia, muscle wasting, peripheral neuropathy, and diffuse white matter disease seen on magnetic resonance imaging. Lactic acidosis and increased cerebrospinal fluid protein were observed. Mitocho

Is physical fitness associated with brain structure and function in Parkinson's disease?

We investigated associations between physical fitness (cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max), peak muscle power (Pmax)) and brain structure (magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures) and function (cognition) in people with Parkinson’s disease (pwPD). Simple and multiple linear regression analyses were performed using quantitative susceptibility mapping, diffusion imaging, and volumetric MRI data from 105 pwPD. Simple regression analyses showed significant positive associations between VO2max/Pmax and whole-brain volume (r2 = 0.11/0.12), the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) (r2 = 0.18/0.21), t

Cognitive Deficits, Apathy, and Hypersomnolence Represent the Core Brain Symptoms of Adult-Onset Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1.

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 is the most common form of muscular dystrophy in adults, and is primarily characterized by muscle weakness and myotonia, yet some of the most disabling symptoms of the disease are cognitive and behavioral. Here we evaluated several of these non-motor symptoms from a cross-sectional time-point in one of the largest longitudinal studies to date, including full-scale intelligence quotient, depression, anxiety, apathy, sleep, and cerebral white matter fractional anisotropy in a group of 39 adult-onset myotonic dystrophy type 1 participants (27 female) compared to 79 unaff

Widespread detection of Wenzhou shrimp virus 8 (WzSV8) and it's implication in cultured shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) farms of India.

Like in other parts of world, Indian shrimp aquaculture industry is also suffering from diseases and mortalities and many of the pathogens have invaded into India. Here, an attempt was made to investigate the presence of newly described shrimp virus, Wenzhou shrimp virus 8 (WzSV8). More than 200 shrimp samples from different locations of India were collected and analysed for the presence of this virus. Widespread detection of WzSV8 was observed in shrimp farms of India where 58% of samples were found to be positive for this virus. Many of the samples had only WzSV8 infection and in others co-i

Rare Record of Albinism in a New Zealand Fur Seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) Pup With Observations Through the Weaning Period.

The rarity of heritable pigment anomalies in marine mammals makes it challenging to assess their fitness ramifications. Potential negative effects include reduced visual acuity, greater predation risk, increased disease vulnerability, lower fertility and decreased heat absorption. Logging instances of heritable pigment anomalies can improve understandings of their impacts and potentially permit their use in understanding metapopulation dynamics. We report on a rare observation of albinism in a male New Zealand fur seal/kekeno (Arctocephalus forsteri) pup. The pup was discovered near Kaikōura d

Chronic treatment with myo-inositol reduces white adipose tissue accretion and improves insulin sensitivity in female mice.

Type 2 diabetes is a complex disease characterized by a state of insulin resistance in peripheral tissues such as skeletal muscle, adipose tissue or liver. Some inositol isomers have been reported to possess insulin-mimetic activity and to be efficient in lowering blood glucose level. The aim of the present study was to assess in mice the metabolic effects of a chronic treatment with myo-inositol, the most common stereoisomer of inositol. Mice given myo-inositol treatment (0.9 or 1.2 mg g(-1) day(-1), 15 days, orally or intraperitoneally) exhibited an improved glucose tolerance due to a greate

The high incidence of atrial thrombosis in mice given doxorubicin.

Doxorubicin (DX)-treated mice represent an animal model for studying new drugs for heart disease. Coincidentally, in the collection of damaged myocardial tissue, thrombosis was detected in the atrium. The incidence reached 75% in mice given 4 mg/kg DX iv 10 times. They were white thrombi consisting of the fibrin, platelets, and neutrophils. Cardiac muscle damage was more prominent in the atria than in the ventricles. Light microscopically, vacuolization and degeneration of atrial myocytes and interstitial inflammatory cell infiltration were observed. Electron microscopy revealed dilatation of

Whole-body muscle magnetic resonance imaging in patients with muscle symptoms: incidental findings and outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Whole-body muscle magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become widely used for diagnostic workup in patients with muscle diseases. The prevalence of incidental findings in diagnostic whole-body muscle MRI is unknown. Here, the prevalence and outcomes of incidentalomas in whole-body muscle MRI in a large cohort of patients with muscle symptoms were studied. METHODS: Two hundred and six patients who consulted at our neuromuscular clinic with muscle weakness and/or myalgia and/or increased serum creatine kinase and in whom a whole-body muscle MRI was performed between Janu

Mastoid cholesteatoma: a result of metaplasia.

Cerebral white matter lesions in Alzheimer's disease (AD) consist of subcortical degeneration and ischaemic-hypoxic changes. Glial changes are intimately associated with the white matter lesions, and regressive changes in astrocytes and loss of oligodendroglial cells have been reported. We quantitatively compared glial changes including apoptosis and enhanced lysosomal activity in the frontal and temporal white matter by using terminal dUTP nick end labelling (TUNEL) and immunohistochemistry for glial markers, lysosomes and apoptosis-regulating proteins in non-familial AD brains. The degree of

Neonatal stroke and progressive leukoencephalopathy in a child with an ACTA2 mutation.

Mutations in the smooth muscle-specific isoform of α-actin (ACTA2) cause vascular smooth muscle dysfunction leading to aortic aneurysm and moyamoya syndrome. A unique R179H mutation in ACTA2 has been reported to result in widespread smooth muscle dysfunction affecting vascular and extravascular smooth muscles. We report a 7-year-old girl with an ACTA2 R179H mutation manifesting with neonatal seizures due to multifocal infarcts, asymmetric motor deficits, global developmental delay, spasticity, congenital bilateral mydriasis, and a large patent ductus arteriosus. Optimizing Confocal Imaging Protocols for Muscle Fiber Typing in the Mouse Masseter Muscle.

The masseter muscle, a key orofacial muscle, demonstrates unique anatomical and functional properties, including sexual dimorphism in myosin heavy chain (MyHC) expression and complex fiber architecture. Despite its importance in mastication and relevance to various disorders, phenotypic characterization of the masseter remains limited. Conventional fluorescence microscopy has been a cornerstone in muscle fiber typing, reliably identifying MyHC isoforms and measuring fiber cross-sectional areas. Building on this foundation, confocal microscopy offers complementary advantages, such as enhanced r

High-density lipoprotein maintains skeletal muscle function by modulating cellular respiration in mice.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal glucose metabolism is a central feature of disorders with increased rates of cardiovascular disease. Low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) are a key predictor for cardiovascular disease. We used genetic mouse models with increased HDL levels (apolipoprotein A-I transgenic [apoA-I tg]) and reduced HDL levels (apoA-I-deficient [apoA-I ko]) to investigate whether HDL modulates mitochondrial bioenergetics in skeletal muscle. METHODS AND RESULTS: ApoA-I ko mice exhibited fasting hyperglycemia and impaired glucose tolerance test compared with wild-type mice. Mitochondria

Neutrophil lymphocyte ratio as a marker of skin disease activity in older children with juvenile dermatomyositis.

BACKGROUND: Neutrophils contribute to the pathogenesis of many autoimmune diseases. While the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is associated with disease activity in adult dermatomyositis, its clinical utility in juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is unknown. METHODS: Demographic, medication use, autoantibody profile, disease activity markers, and laboratory data from 97 JDM patients was collected using retrospective chart review. Patients were age-stratified (0–9 vs. 9–21 years of age), as white blood cell count stabilizes at 9 years. The relationships between NLR with JDM disease activity me

Proximal myotonic myopathy with MRI white matter abnormalities of the brain.

Proximal myotonic myopathy (PROMM) is an autosomal dominantly inherited multisystemic disorder characterized by myotonia, proximal muscle weakness, and cataracts. This disorder is not linked to the gene locus of myotonic dystrophy (DM). We describe three new families with PROMM. In all patients, CTG repeats of the DM gene in DNA from blood leukocytes were normal. MRI of the brain revealed a consistent pattern of marked white matter hyperintensity on T2-weighted images in four patients; two additional patients had similar but mild to moderate MRI abnormalities. The morphology of these abnormali

Ischemic stroke due to hypoperfusion in a patient with a previously unrecognized Danon disease.

Danon disease, an X-linked multisystemic disorder, is due to deficiency of Lysosome-Associated Membrane Protein 2 (LAMP2). It is usually characterized by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, mental retardation and skeletal myopathy, sometimes also with atypical features. A 20-year-old man with cognitive impairment was admitted to the Emergency Room because of a sudden chest pain. ECG showed Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome; echocardiography revealed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and, shortly after, he experienced a cardiac arrest followed by an occipital ischemic stroke. On neurological examination, he c
