The aim of this research was to investigate the short- and long-term effects of thermosonication and different physicochemical properties of wine on culturability, viability, and metabolic activity of Brettanomyces bruxellensis yeast. Thermosonication was conducted at 43 °C during 1, 2, and 3 min, while wine variations included several pH, alcohol, and sugar levels. We present the case of a boy born with a large macular, segmental vascular anomaly over the left face, initially diagnosed as a capillary malformation (port-wine stain) by the postnatal paediatric team. The history of neurasthenia is discussed in the light of current interest in chronic fatigue, and in particular the illness called myalgic encephalomyelitis ('ME'). A comparison is made of the symptoms, presumed aetiologies and treatment of both illnesses, as well as their social setting. It is shown that neurasthenia remained popular as long as it was viewed as a non-psychiatric, neurological illness caused by environmental factors which affected successful people and for which the cure was rest. BACKGROUND: Sodium metabisulphite (SMBS) is a known contact hapten in beverages, foodstuffs, hair dyes, topical and systemic medications, and cosmetics.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate SMBS contact allergy in our tertiary referral patch testing clinics.
METHODS: A retrospective audit was performed of 1367 patients patch tested to 1.0% SMBS in petrolatum between 1/1/2014 and 31/12/2023, and added to the Australian Baseline Series in 2020. Relevance was assessed by consultant dermatologists.
