Anaplasma phagocytophilum in central and western Wisconsin: a molecular survey.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum is an obligate intracellular bacterium that is transmitted to humans through the bite of Ixodes spp. ticks, and causes a febrile disease known as human granulocytic anaplasmosis. The presence of A. phagocytophilum in Wisconsin white-tailed deer blood and in deer ticks was assessed using PCR and DNA sequencing. Sampling sites in the western part of the state (Buffalo County) and central region (Waushara, Waupaca, and Green Lake counties) were used. In Buffalo County, 5.6% of deer and 8.9% of ticks were infected. At Hartman Creek State Park (Waupaca County), 11.5% of ti

Sources of methylmercury to a wetland-dominated lake in northern Wisconsin.

Several lines of evidence suggest that wetlands may be a major source of methylmercury (MeHg) to receiving waters, perhaps explaining the strong correlation between concentrations of waterborne MeHg and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in regions such as northern Wisconsin. We evaluated the relative importance of wetland export in the MeHg budget of a wetland-dominated lake in northern Wisconsin using mass balance. Channelized runoff from a large headwater wetland was the major source of water and total mercury (HgT) to the lake during the study period. The wetland also exported MeHg in high con

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene and emerging enteric pathogens.

At the turn of the 20th century, typhoid fever was common in Wisconsin, and was a major impetus for the establishment of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) in 1903. By the 1940s, typhoid was virtually eliminated in the United States due to public health measures such as disinfection of drinking water, sewage treatment, pasteurization, and shellfish bed sanitation. However, new food and waterborne pathogens have emerged to take the place of Salmonella Typhi. Infections with non-typhoidal Salmonella strains in the United States have increased almost 10-fold since the 1950s. In the

The effect of publicity on the reporting of toxic-shock syndrome in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) surveillance for toxic-shock syndrome (TSS) were compared; the distributions of CDC and Wisconsin cases in 1980 by calendar quarter of the initial onset were virtually identical. Among 131 cases in Wisconsin, 33 of 40 self-reported vs. 16 of 91 physician-reported cases were reported during the four-week period (September 18-October 15, 1980) following the CDC announcement of a higher relative risk of TSS among users of Rely tampons (Procter and Gamble, Cincinnati, Ohio) (P less than 0.001). Of cases with onsets during October 1, 1979-June 30,

Pediatric Traumatic Injury in Rural and Urban Areas of Wisconsin.

OBJECTIVES: Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in American youth. Fewer children live in rural versus urban areas, yet rural children comprise nearly one-quarter of injury mortalities. We sought to describe differences in pediatric mechanism of injury (MOI), injury severity. and mortality in rural and urban areas and explore geospatial patterns of injury. METHODS: Wisconsin trauma registry data were analyzed for injured pediatric patients from 2021 to 2022. Chondroradionecrosis of the larynx: 24-year University of Wisconsin experience.

BACKGROUND: Chondroradionecrosis (CRN) is an uncommon but significant complication of laryngeal radiotherapy that presents a diagnostic challenge to clinicians through its similarity in presentation to cancer recurrence. METHODS: Two hundred ninety-four patients underwent primary, adjuvant, or salvage radiation for laryngeal cancer from 1991 to 2015 at the University of Wisconsin. Medical records were reviewed to identify and characterize patients with a diagnosis of CRN. RESULTS: Of the 294 patients, 7 cases (2.4%) of CRN were identified. Development of CRN was associated with the presence

Association of low ferritin with PLM in the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: The origins of periodic leg movements (PLMs), a strong correlate of restless legs syndrome (RLS), are uncertain. This study was performed to assess the relationship between PLMs and peripheral iron deficiency, as measured with ferritin levels corrected for inflammation. METHODS: We included a cross-sectional sample of a cohort study of 801 randomly selected people (n = 1008 assays, mean age 58.6 ± 0.3 years) from Wisconsin state employee agencies. A previously validated automatic detector was used to measure PLMs during sleep. The patients were categorized into RLS symptoms-positiv

Tickborne infections as a cause of nonspecific febrile illness in Wisconsin.

Lyme disease, human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE), and babesiosis are tickborne infections that are indigenous to Wisconsin. To assess their importance as a cause of nonspecific fever, we recruited patients with febrile illness at 10 clinics in northwestern Wisconsin from May through August of both 1997 and 1998. Eligible patients had a temperature >38.0 degrees C but no rash or other localizing source. Acute and convalescent serological tests were performed for Borrelia burgdorferi, Babesia microti, and Ehrlichia equi; polymerase chain reaction was performed to detect granulocytic Ehrlichia

The epidemiology of blastomycosis in dogs: north central Wisconsin, USA.

The epidemiological features of 59 consecutive cases of blastomycosis in domestic dogs, from a single veterinary practice in Eagle River, Wisconsin over a 3-year period, were examined by owner interview. The control sample included: (i) all porcupine quill-injured dogs during this time period (outdoor exposed dogs); and (ii) every sixth dog receiving a rabies vaccination during the second year of study (representative of all dogs in the practice). The estimated mean annual incidence of blastomycosis in dogs in this region was 1420:100,000. Blastomycosis cases were more likely to reside within

Cryptococcal Antigen Testing in an Integrated Medical System: Eastern Wisconsin.

Cryptococcosis is a serious environmentally acquired endemic fungal infection commonly associated with immunocompromised hosts. Little is known regarding frequency or distribution in Wisconsin. We explored the geodemographic and clinical features of patients tested with cryptococcal antigen tests (CrAg) - previously shown to be >90% sensitive and >90% specific - within a large health care system located in eastern Wisconsin. To examine this, we retrospectively analyzed 1465 CrAg tests on 1211 unique patients (female: 50.2%; white race: 73.9%; mean age: 53.7 ± 16.5 years). At least one CrAg res

Hypothermia-related deaths--Wisconsin, 2014, and United States, 2003-2013.

Hypothermia is defined as a core body temperature of <95°F (<35°C) and is caused by environmental exposure, drug intoxication, or metabolic or nervous system dysfunction. Exposure to cold is a leading cause of weather-related mortality and is responsible for approximately twice the number of deaths annually as exposure to heat in the United States. To understand the risk factors for hypothermia-related death and improve prevention efforts, during January 1-April 30, 2014, a period of record low temperatures, the Wisconsin Division of Public Health began active surveillance for hypothermia.
