Reading Skills in Children With Suspected Childhood Apraxia of Speech and Children With Reading Disorders: Same or Different?

PURPOSE: The primary aim of this study was to compare decoding and literacy-related skills of children with suspected childhood apraxia of speech (sCAS) to children with reading disorders (RD) and no history of speech sound disorder (RD-no SSD) to determine if the groups differ in decoding and the endophenotypes that contribute to RD. We also explored the association between language impairment (LI) and decoding and literacy-related skills within the participant group with sCAS. METHOD: Participants were school-age children and adolescents, 8-14 years of age, with a diagnosis of sCAS (n = 13)

Relationship of cognitive function with B vitamin status, homocysteine, and tissue factor pathway inhibitor in cognitively impaired elderly: a cross-sectional survey.

Elevated homocysteine (Hcy) levels have been associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) has recently emerged as a candidate marker of endothelial damage in AD. We investigated the relationship between plasma levels of folate, vitamin B12, Hcy, and TFPI, as well as cognitive function in 321 [100 each with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD, 121 normal subjects] Korean elderly (mean age 74.8 ± 7.2 years). Plasma folate and vitamin B12 concentrations were analyzed by radioimmunoassay, Hcy by the HPLC-fluoresce

Speech and language therapy intervention with a group of persistent and prolific young offenders in a non-custodial setting with previously undiagnosed speech, language and communication difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of children with behaviour and school problems (related to both academic achievement and social participation) are recognized as having undiagnosed speech, language and communication difficulties. Both speech, language and communication difficulties and school failure are risk factors for offending. AIMS: To investigate the prevalence of speech, language and communication difficulties in a group of persistent and prolific young offenders sentenced to the Intensive Supervision and Surveillance Programme (ISSP), and to provide a preliminary evaluation of the impac

Neuropsychological functioning in opiate-dependent subjects receiving and following methadone maintenance treatment.

OBJECTIVE: An accumulating body of research suggests that former heroin abusers in methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) exhibit deficits in cognitive function. Whether these deficits are present in former methadone maintained patients following discontinuation of MMT is unknown. This study tests the hypothesis that former heroin users who have detoxified from methadone maintenance therapy and are drug-free have less pronounced cognitive impairment than patients continuing long-term MMT. METHOD: A series of neuropsychological tests were administered to three groups of subjects: 29 former heroin

Category-selective deficits are the exception and not the rule: Evidence from a case-series of 64 patients with ventral occipito-temporal cortex damage.

The organisational principles of the visual ventral stream are still highly debated, particularly the relative association/dissociation between word and face recognition and the degree of lateralisation of the underlying processes. Reports of dissociations between word and face recognition stem from single case-studies of category selective impairments, and neuroimaging investigations of healthy participants. Despite the historical reliance on single case-studies, more recent group studies have highlighted a greater commonality between word and face recognition. Studying individual patients wi

Intact reading in patients with profound early visual dysfunction.

Despite substantial neuroscientific evidence for a region of visual cortex dedicated to the processing of written words, many studies continue to reject explanations of letter-by-letter (LBL) reading in terms of impaired word form representations or parallel letter processing in favour of more general deficits of visual function. In the current paper, we demonstrate that whilst LBL reading is often associated with general visual deficits, these deficits are not necessarily sufficient to cause reading impairment and have led to accounts of LBL reading which are based largely on evidence of asso

Individual Differences in Speech Recognition Changes After Cochlear Implantation.

IMPORTANCE: Cochlear implantation is highly effective at improving hearing outcomes, but results have been limited to groupwise analysis. That is, limited data are available for individual patients that report comparisons of preoperative aided speech recognition and postimplantation speech recognition. OBJECTIVE: To assess changes in preoperative aided vs postoperative speech recognition scores for individual patients receiving cochlear implants when considering the measurement error for each speech recognition test. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used a prospe

Homocysteine and cognitive performance in healthy elderly subjects.

Hyperhomocysteinemia is a risk factor for dementia but only scanty data exist about its relationship to specific cognitive abilities during normal aging. We recruited 62 healthy and cognitively normal subjects of age 65-91 years from the Conselice Study of brain aging. The following neuropsychological tests were applied (i) The mental deterioration battery(MDB) consisting of 7 parts: the Rey's 15 words immediate and delayed recall, word fluency, sentence construction, Raven's progressive matrices '47, immediate visual memory, freehand copying of drawings and copying drawings with landmarks. Impaired sleep-related consolidation of declarative memories in idiopathic focal epilepsies of childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Declarative memory is consolidated during sleep in healthy children. We tested the hypothesis that consolidation processes are impaired in idiopathic focal epilepsies (IFE) of childhood in association with frequent interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) during sleep. METHODS: A verbal (word-pair association) and a nonverbal (2D object location) declarative memory task were administrated to 15 children with IFEs and 8 control children 6-12 years of age. Patients had either centrotemporal (11 patients) or occipital (4 patients) IEDs. All but 3 patients had a history of unprovoked

Patients' associations with regard to analgesic drugs and their forms for application -- a pilot study.

Patients' and caregivers' fear of addiction to and concern about side effects of morphine have been found to be among the major barriers to adequate pain relief in cancer patients. In contrast, the transdermal administration of opioids by means of fentanyl patches does not seem to evoke such fears. In a qualitative study, 60 patients in our outpatient pain clinic recorded up to five associations with a list of diseases, drugs and administration routes. Cancer and AIDS were associated most often with death, followed by suffering, anxiety and hopelessness. Migraine was associated predominantly w

Differential preservation of cognitive functions in geriatric patients with lifelong chronic schizophrenia: less impairment in reading compared with other skill areas.

BACKGROUND: Our study examined the differential performance of cognitive skills in geriatric, cognitively impaired schizophrenic patients (n = 165) with a lengthy course of institutional stay and a poor overall functional outcome. Their relative deficits were compared with a sample of healthy elderly individuals. METHODS: Schizophrenic patients were matched one-to-one with healthy individuals of the same age and education and compared on a number of measures of cognitive functioning. The schizophrenic patients' old-learning performance was also compared with their educational level only. RES

Digital game-based learning for dynamic assessment and early intervention targeting reading difficulties: Cross-linguistic studies of GraphoLearn.

Early detection of reading acquisition failure is crucial since intervention is most effective if started early. This presentation gives a cross-linguistic overview of studies, conducted at our department, making use of GraphoLearn (GL), a serious gaming environment, in three languages with relatively transparent orthographies. Aim of the studies is to evaluate the effectiveness as well as screening value of playing GL. GraphoLearn was used to develop early reading acquisition games in three languages: Spanish, Standard Indonesian (both highly transparent orthographies) and Dutch (intermediate

Theory of mind and emotion recognition skills in children with specific language impairment, autism spectrum disorder and typical development: group differences and connection to knowledge of grammatical morphology, word-finding abilities and verbal working memory.

BACKGROUND: Social perception skills, such as understanding the mind and emotions of others, affect children's communication abilities in real-life situations. In addition to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), there is increasing knowledge that children with specific language impairment (SLI) also demonstrate difficulties in their social perception abilities. AIMS: To compare the performance of children with SLI, ASD and typical development (TD) in social perception tasks measuring Theory of Mind (ToM) and emotion recognition. In addition, to evaluate the association between social perception ta

The processing of rhythmic structures in music and prosody by children with developmental dyslexia and developmental language disorder.

Rhythm perception seems to be crucial to language development. Many studies have shown that children with developmental dyslexia and developmental language disorder have difficulties in processing rhythmic structures. In this study, we investigated the relationships between prosody and musical processing in Italian children with typical and atypical development. The tasks aimed to reproduce linguistic prosodic structures through musical sequences, offering a direct comparison between the two domains without violating the specificities of each one. About 16 Typically Developing children, 16 chi
