Processing Discontinuous Chinese Separable Words: Evidence from Eye Tracking.

Chinese separable words combine lexical integrity with structural separability, but how readers process discontinuous forms during sentence reading remains unclear. Thirty native Chinese speakers read sentences containing discontinuous separable words, verb-object (V-O) phrases, or quasi-separable words (QSWs) while their eye movements were recorded. Corpus-derived discontinuous-structure frequency and local contextual surprisal were included as continuous predictors. Separable words did not differ reliably from V-O phrases in acceptability judgments or target-region eye-movement measures, sug

Electrophysiological evidence of processing social threat words in social anxiety participants.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with social anxiety (SA) tend to show heightened attentional biases toward socially threatening information. However, it remains unclear at which stages of neural processing these biases emerge. This study aimed to clarify how social anxiety modulates the temporal dynamics of processing social threat words. METHODS: Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were recorded while participants performed an emotional Stroop task, in which neutral and social threat words were presented in sequential blocks (neutral followed by threat). Participants were divided into high-social-anx

Differential cortical contribution of syntax and semantics: An fMRI study on two-word phrasal processing.

Linguistic expressions consist of sequences of words combined together to form phrases and sentences. The neurocognitive process handling word combination is drawing increasing attention among the neuroscientific community, given that the underlying syntactic and semantic mechanisms of such basic combinations-although essential to the generation of more complex structures-still need to be consistently determined. The current experiment was conducted to disentangle the neural networks supporting syntactic and semantic processing at the level of two-word combinations. We manipulated the combinat

Early lateralization and orientation tuning for face, word, and object processing in the visual cortex.

Event-related potential (ERP) studies of the human brain have shown that object categories can be reliably distinguished as early as 130-170 ms on the surface of occipito-temporal cortex, peaking at the level of the N170 component. Consistent with this finding, neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies suggest major functional distinctions within the human object recognition system, particularly in hemispheric advantage, between the processing of words (left), faces (right), and objects (bilateral). Given these observations, our aim was to (1) characterize the differential response propertie

Decoding the meaning of unconsciously processed words using fMRI-based MVPA.

Does the human brain elicit patterns of activity associated with the meaning of words in the absence of conscious awareness? Do such non-conscious semantic representations generalize across languages? This study aimed to address these questions using fMRI-based multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) in a masked word paradigm. Animal and non-animal words were visually presented in two different languages (i.e. Spanish and Basque). Words were presented very briefly and were masked. On each trial, participants identified the semantic category and provided a visibility rating of the word. A support

Cross-Linguistic Perspectives on Aging and Sentence Processing: The Role of Word Order and Semantic Plausibility.

PURPOSE: This cross-linguistic study investigates how healthy aging affects sentence comprehension across three typologically distinct languages-English (head-initial), Korean, and Japanese (both head-final). It explores how syntactic word order and semantic plausibility interact with aging and whether these effects differ across languages with varying structural characteristics. METHOD: A total of 290 adults participated: 103 English speakers (49 younger, 54 older), 98 Korean speakers (50 younger, 48 older), and 89 Japanese speakers (43 younger, 46 older). All participants completed a senten

Lexical word processing is unaffected by rapid invisible frequency tagging in reading: Evidence from eye movements.

The aim of this study was to test whether rapid invisible frequency tagging (RIFT)-a promising tool to directly measure covert attention allocated to parafoveal words-affects lexical processing during natural reading. RIFT involves flickering the background of the target word(s) at an imperceptible frequency (≥60 Hz), but imperceptibility does not necessarily equate to the absence of a cognitive effect. The current study examined the potential impact of the RIFT paradigm on eye movements. Forty-eight participants read 474 high-frequency and low-frequency target words that were embedded in one-

Preserved phonological but impaired semantic processing in Williams syndrome: Evidence from a word association judgment task.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder affecting intellectual, cognitive, and language development. We re-examined the phonological-semantic imbalance hypothesis by probing phonological and semantic processing abilities within the same task context, in 19 children with WS and 57 typically developing (TD) children. Participants saw pictures pairs, heard their names, and indicated whether the words were related; the words, if related, shared either phonological or semantic features. Using a generalized linear mixed model, results showed that WS children exhibited a stron

Word processing deficits in children with isolated and combined reading and spelling deficits: An ERP-study.

Dissociations between reading and spelling deficits are likely to be associated with distinct deficits in orthographic word processing. To specify differences in automatic visual word recognition, the current ERP-study compared children with isolated reading fluency deficits (iRD), isolated spelling deficits (iSD), and combined reading fluency and spelling deficits (cRSD) as well as typically developing (TD) 10-year-olds while performing a variant of the Reicher-Wheeler paradigm: children had to indicate which of two letters occurred at a given position in a previously presented word, legal ps

Left hemiparalexia of Chinese characters: neglect dyslexia or disruption of pathway of visual word form processing?

The objective of the study was to further elucidate the potential mechanisms underlying left hemiparalexia induced by a splenium lesion in corpus callosum. A patient KY, who had infarctions in the splenium and the left ventral medial occipitotemporal area, was examined with neuropsychological tests and fMRI. KY presented left hemiparalexia when he read aloud characters presented in central foveal field tachistoscopically as well as in free-view field. KY also showed left hemialexia for characters in left visual field, while no left hemiparalexia occurred when characters were presented in the r

The role of the striatum in processing language rules: evidence from word perception in Huntington's disease.

On the assumption that linguistic faculties reflect both lexical storage in the temporal cortex and combinatorial rules in the striatal circuits, several authors have shown that striatal-damaged patients are impaired with conjugation rules while retaining lexical knowledge of irregular verbs [Teichmann, M., Dupoux, E., Kouider, S., Brugières, P., Boissé, M. Overreliance on Sublexical Phonological Processing in Visual Word Recognition for Third-Grade Mandarin-Speaking Dyslexic Children.

Developmental dyslexic (DD) children encounter challenges in sublexical orthographic, phonological, and semantic processing. However, there exists limited knowledge about the predominance of these three types of sublexical processing in visual word recognition among DD children. To investigate this issue, we screened 50 DD and 47 typically developing (TD) third-grade native Chinese-speaking children, and employed a picture-novel character mapping task. We constructed four types of options: semantic radical-legal position pseudo characters (e.g., ), phonetic radical-legal position pseudo charac

Visual word form processing deficits driven by severity of reading impairments in children with developmental dyslexia.

The visual word form area (VWFA) in the left ventral occipito-temporal (vOT) cortex is key to fluent reading in children and adults. Diminished VWFA activation during print processing tasks is a common finding in subjects with severe reading problems. Here, we report fMRI data from a multicentre study with 140 children in primary school (7.9-12.2 years; 55 children with dyslexia, 73 typical readers, 12 intermediate readers). All performed a semantic task on visually presented words and a matched control task on symbol strings. With this large group of children, including the entire spectrum fr

EEG-based classification models reveal differential neural processing of words and images.

BACKGROUND: Machine learning methods employing neuroimaging data are useful for monitoring the activation of neural representations. Specifically, they can be used to discern the brain networks engaged in processing specific categories of items. This approach has been employed on neuroimaging data, including functional magnetic resonance imaging data and electroencephalography (EEG) data. NEW METHOD: Here, we present a task and an analytical pipeline for investigating category representations using EEG. Participants (N = 30) viewed a series of images and words of objects belonging to five cat

Insights from Eye Blinks into the Cognitive Processes Involved in Visual Word Recognition.

Behavioral differences in speed and accuracy between reading familiar and unfamiliar words are well-established in the empirical literature. However, these standard measures of skill proficiency are limited in their ability to capture the moment-to-moment processing involved in visual word recognition. In the present study, the effect of word familiarity was initially investigated using an eye blink rate among adults and children. The probability of eye blinking was higher for familiar (real) words than for unfamiliar (pseudo)words. This counterintuitive pattern of results suggests that the pr

Putting into Words the COVID-19 Lockdown Experience: Psychological Symptoms and the Referential Process.

The coronavirus pandemic is a unique collective event which has affected the physical and psychological health of all individuals. Restrictions imposed by governments to counteract this situation have represented risk factors for developing psychopathological symptoms. This study aims to explore the relationship between psychological symptoms and the referential process (RP). Forty-eight healthy participants (25 males, mean age = 39.3; SD = 16.6) completed a demographic questionnaire and the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) through an online platform and wrote about their experience 3 w

Neural processing of olfactory-related words in subjects with congenital and acquired olfactory dysfunction.

Olfactory loss can be acquired (patients with a history of olfactory experiences), or inborn (patients without olfactory experiences/life-long inability to smell). Inborn olfactory loss, or congenital anosmia (CA), is relatively rare and there is a knowledge gap regarding the compensatory neural mechanisms involved in this condition. The study aimed to investigate the top-down olfactory processing in patients with CA or idiopathic acquired anosmia (IA) in comparison to normosmia controls (NC) during expectancy and reading of odor-associated words. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used

Left ventral occipitotemporal activation during orthographic and semantic processing of auditory words.

The present fMRI study investigated the hypothesis that activation of the left ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOT) in response to auditory words can be attributed to lexical orthographic rather than lexico-semantic processing. To this end, we presented auditory words in both an orthographic ("three or four letter word?") and a semantic ("living or nonliving?") task. In addition, a auditory control condition presented tones in a pitch evaluation task. The results showed that the left vOT exhibited higher activation for orthographic relative to semantic processing of auditory words with a peak

Visual processing of words in a patient with visual form agnosia: a behavioural and fMRI study.

Patient D.F. has a profound and enduring visual form agnosia due to a carbon monoxide poisoning episode suffered in 1988. Her inability to distinguish simple geometric shapes or single alphanumeric characters can be attributed to a bilateral loss of cortical area LO, a loss that has been well established through structural and functional fMRI. Yet despite this severe perceptual deficit, D.F. is able to "guess" remarkably well the identity of whole words. This paradoxical finding, which we were able to replicate more than 20 years following her initial testing, raises the question as to whether

Selective processing of eating-, shape-, and weight-related words in persons with bulimia nervosa.

The Stroop color-naming task was used to investigate selective information processing in people with bulimia nervosa. Three cards were used: a target card consisting of words related to eating, weight, and shape; a control word card; and the standard conflicting-color card. Thirty-six patients with bulimia nervosa were compared with a group of age-matched female controls. It was found that the amount of disruption caused to color naming by the target card was significantly greater in the bulimia nervosa group than in the female control group, whereas that caused by the color card was similar i
