BACKGROUND: Work life of individuals with diabetes differs from that of those without diabetes. Work may interfere with diabetes self-management tasks, resulting in intentional hyperglycemia at work (IHW) and poor glycemic control. Diabetes affects work productivity due to work-related diabetes distress (WRDD) and impaired work ability (WA).
OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence and identify the predictors of always high, poor/very poor glycemic control, high WRDD and poor/moderate WA among workers with diabetes.
METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was done at the Specialized Medical Hospi

Every year around 1000 Nepali migrant workers die abroad. Every one in three females and one in ten males commit suicide, reflecting a high mental health risk among Nepali migrant workers. This study aims to identify triggers of mental ill-health among Nepali migrant workers and their perceptions on the need of mental health components in the pre-departure orientation programme. We conducted five focus group discussions (FGD) and seven in-depth interviews with Nepali migrant workers and eight semi-structured interviews with stakeholders working for migrants. Participants were invited at Kathma

BACKGROUND: The association between health and working hours is hypothesized to be reciprocal, but few longitudinal studies have examined changes in both health and working hour patterns over time. We examined combined trajectories of self-related health and two working hour patterns (working <35 h/week and working night shifts) and the extent to which these trajectories were predicted by employees' lifestyle and mental health.
METHODS: Participants of this cohort study with a 8-year follow-up were 5,947 health care shift workers. We linked self-reports of health from three repeated surveys w

All metal workers from a metal-working industry (eight women) who operated pressing, cutting and boring machines were found to have cervicobrachial syndrome. Their job involved forced-sitting body posture and repetitive movements. These are particularly important risk factors at the workplace for the occurrence and development of cervicobrachial syndrome. The workers demanded medical assistance at 12 years of work and an average age of 32.1 years. The working chair of poor ergonomic design was established as a major cause of the early occurrence of cervicobrachial syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Memory problems are among the most frequently reported cognitive complaints by individuals with an acquired brain injury (ABI). Processing speed and working memory deficits are often the result of ABI. These cognitive deficits significantly impact the acquisition and retention of information necessary for memory formation. This study investigated the influence of processing speed and working memory on immediate and delayed recall for verbal and visual memory, as well as overall memory recall in adults living with a chronic ABI.
METHODS: Sixty-three participants living with a chroni

OBJECTIVE: Older adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) experience poor cognitive and behavioral outcomes as MDD occurs in the context of other age-related brain changes. Patients with depression often have impairments on measures of frontal lobe functioning such as working memory. Understanding the effects of depression on cognitive functioning in older adults is important for the development of treatment strategies that focus on cognitive changes as well as mood.
METHODS: Eleven older adults with current MDD and 12 nondepressed comparison participants (all aged 60 years and older) perf

OBJECTIVE: Many studies report a deficit in working memory in children with Developmental Dyslexia (DD) and Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) compared to children with Typical Development (TD). In this study, we questioned the working memory profile of children with co-occurring Developmental Dyslexia and Developmental Coordination Disorder (DD-DCD). First, we hypothesized that children with DD would have a more substantial deficit in verbal working memory, while children with DCD would have a more substantial deficit in visuospatial working memory. For the comorbid group, we postulate

BACKGROUND: The working environment of truck drivers promotes unhealthy lifestyle behaviours including physical inactivity and poor dietary choices. This leads to high levels of chronic diseases and a reduced life expectancy compared to other occupational groups. However, little is known about how drivers in the UK perceive their working environment and how this affects their food choices. This study aimed to gain a better understanding of long-haul (8-10-hour shifts) truck drivers' needs regarding healthy food choices whilst on the road to better inform future health promotion programmes and

BACKGROUND: Food-borne illnesses pose a major global public health threat, affecting up to 30% of people annually in higher-income countries and contributing to hundreds of thousands of deaths each year with the heaviest burden falling on low and middle income countries. In Ethiopia, prior research on food handlers' safety practices has been limited to quantitative methods offering little insight into cultural, behavioral and institutional barriers. To the best of our knowledge, limited mixed-methods evidence exists in this context. Therefore, this mixed-methods study addresses the gap through

Working animals have a crucial socio-economic role to play for many low-income communities. One such example is in Ethiopia where virtually all the draught power for agricultural production derives from working animals. However, despite this, the welfare status of working animals in this country remains poor. Hence, a clear understanding of the major welfare problems faced by working animals is key to helping improve their welfare status and to maximise their economic contribution. This systematic literature review encompasses 28 studies published between 2010-2024, that address the role of wo

Poor executive functioning increases risk of decline in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Executive functioning can be conceptualized within the framework of working memory. While some components are responsible for maintaining representations in working memory, the central executive is involved in the manipulation of information and creation of new representations. We aimed to examine the neural correlates of these components of working memory using a maintenance working memory and visuospatial reasoning task. Twenty-five patients with amnestic MCI and 19 elderly controls (EC) completed functi

Poor working memory functioning is commonly found in schizophrenia. A number of studies have now tested whether non-invasive brain stimulation can improve this aspect of cognitive functioning. This report used meta-analysis to synthesise the results of these studies to examine whether transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) or repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can improve working memory in schizophrenia. The studies included in this meta-analysis were sham-controlled, randomised controlled trials that utilised either tES or rTMS to treat working memory problems in schizophr

Deficits in working memory have been shown to contribute to poor performance on the Iowa Gambling Task [IGT: Bechara, A., & Martin, E.M. (2004). Impaired decision making related to working memory deficits in individuals with substance addictions. Neuropsychology, 18, 152-162]. Similarly, a secondary memory load task has been shown to impair task performance [Hinson, J., Jameson, T. & Whitney, P. (2002). Somatic markers, working memory, and decision making. Cognitive, Affective, & Behavioural Neuroscience, 2, 341-353]. In the present study, we investigate whether the latter findings were due to
