The World Health Organization fetal growth charts: concept, findings, interpretation, and application.

Ultrasound biometry is an important clinical tool for the identification, monitoring, and management of fetal growth restriction and development of macrosomia. This is even truer in populations in which perinatal morbidity and mortality rates are high, which is a reason that much effort is put onto making the technique available everywhere, including low-income societies. Until recently, however, commonly used reference ranges were based on single populations largely from industrialized countries. Thus, the World Health Organization prioritized the establishment of fetal growth charts for inte

Type B thymoma: is prognosis predicted only by World Health Organization classification?

OBJECTIVE: The prognostic relevance of subtypes within type B thymomas is controversial. The objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of World Health Organization (WHO) classification in patients with type B thymoma. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of 100 patients who underwent thymectomy for WHO type B thymoma. Recurrence patterns and survival were compared among subtypes. RESULTS: There were 22 type B1 tumors, 43 type B2 tumors, and 35 type B3 tumors. Incomplete resection occurred in 5 patients with type B1 thymoma, 8 with type B2 thymoma, and 8 with type B3 thymoma (P

Magnetic resonance appearance of cerebral cystic echinococcosis: World Health Organization (WHO) classification.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) of the brain is an uncommon parasitic infestation. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently published a classification of hepatic CE based upon ultrasonographic findings. PURPOSE: To evaluate whether the new WHO classification of hepatic CE can be used in the classification of cerebral CE. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of 17 patients (14 male, three female), aged 10-24 years (mean age 16 years), with pathologically proved cerebral CE, and who underwent pre- and postcontrast MR imaging, were retrospectively evalua

World Health Organization histologic classification: an independent prognostic factor in resected thymomas.

The histologic classification of thymoma remained controversial since 1999, when the World Health Organization (WHO) Consensus Committee published a histologic typing system for tumours of thymus. Clinical features, postoperative relapsing rates, and survival of patients with thymoma were evaluated with reference to the WHO histologic classification, based on a series of 178 patients, submitted to surgery between 1988 and 2000. There were 21 type A, 49 type AB, 45 type B1, 50 type B2 and 13 type B3 tumours. The invasiveness of tumours was 23.8%, 51%, 73.3%, 82% and 100% for types A, AB, B1, B2

Repeated naloxone administration in schizophrenia: a phase II World Health Organization Study.

In the context of a previous WHO collaborative study, six research centers reported that naloxone (0.3 mg/kg) produced significant improvement in symptomatology in neuroleptic-treated patients. In the current Phase II WHO study, repeated (4 days) naloxone (0.3 mg/kg) administration was performed in schizophrenic patients (n = 43) from five WHO collaborating centers using a double-blind, placebo-controlled design. Both naloxone and placebo administrations were associated with significant reductions in symptoms. Naloxone, however, was not superior to placebo. These data are discussed in relation

National Adoption of World Health Organization Recommendations on Calcium Supplementation During Pregnancy.

In several countries, pregnant women have suboptimal intakes of calcium and high rates of mortality due to maternal hypertensive disorders. Calcium supplementation during pregnancy reduces the risk of these disorders and is recommended for pregnant women with low dietary calcium intake to prevent preeclampsia. Our objective was to evaluate the global adoption of the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation for calcium supplementation during pregnancy to prevent pre-eclampsia. Each WHO member state's Ministry of Health website, Google, and WHO databases were searched, between January and

Tobacco and asthma: presenting the world health organization (WHO) tobacco knowledge summary.

The WHO recently published a Tobacco Knowledge Summary (TKS) which is prepared with the objective to summarize the current evidence on the association between tobacco use and asthma. This is also intended as an advocacy tool to widely include health care professionals in the fight for tobacco control and prevention of tobacco related adverse health effects. This article expands on the evidence outlined in the TKS, providing a more comprehensive and clinically focused analysis, aimed at lung-specialist audience. It emphasizes six key messages aimed at guiding healthcare providers and government

Tobacco and COPD: presenting the World Health Organization (WHO) Tobacco Knowledge Summary.

The WHO recently published a Tobacco Knowledge Summary (TKS) synthesizing current evidence on tobacco and COPD, aiming to raise awareness among a broad audience of health care professionals. Furthermore, it can be used as an advocacy tool in the fight for tobacco control and prevention of tobacco-related disease. This article builds on the evidence presented in the TKS, with a greater level of detail intended for a lung-specialist audience. Osteopontin and Ki-67 expression in World Health Organization graded canine meningioma.

Osteopontin (OPN) is a matrix protein involved in tumour initiation and progression. In human meningioma, OPN has been correlated with World Health Organization (WHO) grade, brain invasion and recurrence. The aim of this study was to investigate OPN as a possible malignancy marker in canine meningioma by correlating its expression to WHO grade and proliferative activity as measured by the Ki-67 labelling index (LI). Thirty-five formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded canine meningioma samples were classified according to the current human WHO classification. Evaluation of OPN expression was performe

NA0D - The new Traumatic Dental Injury classification of the World Health Organization.

An accurate, clear, and easy-to-use traumatic dental injury (TDI) classification and definition system is a prerequisite for proper diagnosis, study, and treatment. However, more than 50 classifications have been used in the past. The ideal solution would be that TDIs are adequately classified within the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO). TDI classification provided by the 11th Revision of the ICD (ICD-11), released in 2018, and previous Revisions, failed to classify TDIs satisfactorily. Therefore, in December 2018, a proposal was s

Evolution of the World Health Organization semen analysis manual: where are we?

The WHO (World Health Organization) manuals provide state-of-the-art guidance on how a semen analysis should be carried out. The much anticipated sixth edition of the WHO semen analysis manual has been released 10 years after its previous version and includes essential updates, such as new reference standards for semen volume and microscopic sperm characteristics of recent fathers. A well-conducted semen analysis remains an essential foundation of the infertility evaluation process and affects patient referral, diagnosis and treatment. However, a male infertility work-up primarily based on rou

Predictive tools for severe dengue conforming to World Health Organization 2009 criteria.

BACKGROUND: Dengue causes 50 million infections per year, posing a large disease and economic burden in tropical and subtropical regions. Only a proportion of dengue cases require hospitalization, and predictive tools to triage dengue patients at greater risk of complications may optimize usage of limited healthcare resources. For severe dengue (SD), proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) 2009 dengue guidelines, predictive tools are lacking. METHODS: We undertook a retrospective study of adult dengue patients in Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore, from 2006 to 2008. Demographic, clini

World health organization classification, evaluation, and genetics of the myeloproliferative neoplasm variants.

There is no single category in the fourth edition (2008) of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of myeloid neoplasms that encompasses all of the diseases referred to by some authors as the myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) "variants." Instead, they are considered as distinct entities and are distributed among various subgroups of myeloid neoplasms in the classification scheme. These relatively uncommon neoplasms do not meet the criteria for any so-called "classical" MPN (chronic myelogenous leukemia, polycythemia vera, primary myelofibrosis, or essential thrombocythemia) and, al

Pregnancy increases the growth rates of World Health Organization grade II gliomas.

Twelve pregnancies in 11 adult women harboring World Health Organization (WHO) grade II gliomas (GIIGs) prior to pregnancy were reviewed to address whether pregnancy affects tumor growth using a quantitative approach of the radiological velocity of diametric expansion (VDE) on successive magnetic resonance images. VDE was significantly increased during pregnancy as compared to prepregnancy (p < 0.001) and to postdelivery (p = 0.012) periods. Pregnancy increases the radiological growth rates of GIIGs. An increase in seizure frequency was observed concomitantly in 40% of cases and further oncolo

Update on the World Health Organization classification of peripheral T-cell lymphomas.

Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) are a rare and heterogeneous group of lymphoproliferative disorders of postthymic origin. Progress in elucidating the pathobiology and appropriate therapy of these neoplasms has been slow, primarily because of their rarity, but also because until the early 1990s, they were generally grouped together and combined with B-cell lymphomas. It is now understood that most PTCLs are highly aggressive and respond poorly to standard chemo therapy, and thus they have a significantly poorer prognosis than their B-cell counterparts. In 1994, the Revised European and Amer
