The establishment of orthopedics in Croatia : The role of Božidar Špišić (1879-1957) and his professional networks.

Božidar Špišić was a pioneer of Croatian orthopedics. In 1908 he founded the first private orthopedic clinic in the entire South Slav region. During the First World War he organized and headed the first orthopedic hospital for the rehabilitation and resocialization of wounded soldiers. In the interwar period, Špišić was tasked with establishing the orthopedic clinic within the auspices of the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb. This effort in shaping and developing orthopedics in Croatia would not have been possible without his participation in a wide network of internationally renowned

Why Did Black Soldiers Historically Have More Pneumonia Than White Soldiers in the U.S. Army?

Black U.S. Army soldiers had four times as much bacterial pneumonia as White U.S. Army soldiers during both the U.S. Civil War and World War I (WWI). Pneumonia case fatality rates were a third greater in Black soldiers during the U.S. Civil War, but were the same between the racial groups by WWI. During WWII, the use of antibiotics decreased bacterial pneumonia mortality rates 100-fold and apparently erased racial differences. Similar differences in bacterial pneumonia rates by racial group were observed in African colonial soldiers of the French and British Armies during WWI. Pneumonia rates

The unseen casualties of the First World War: insights from a randomly selected military sample.

AIMS: Studies of the morbidity burden of military personnel participating in the First World War (WWI) have tended to focus on specific outcomes (e.g., injuries). Therefore, we aimed for a more complete assessment. METHODS: From a random sample of active war service-exposed New Zealand WWI veterans used in previously published work, we examined a random subsample of 200 personnel. Data on diagnoses, hospitalisations and outcomes were extracted from the online archival military files. RESULTS: These personnel experienced a very high morbidity burden with 94% having at least one new condition

Edgar Adrian (1889-1977) and Shell Shock Electrotherapy: A Forgotten History?

The English electrophysiologist Edgar Adrian (1889-1977) was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for physiology in 1932 for his research on the functions of neurons. During World War I, at Queen Square in London, he devised an intensive electrotherapeutic treatment for shell-shocked soldiers. The procedure, developed with Lewis Yealland (1884-1954), was similar to "torpillage," the faradic psychotherapy used in France. Adrian and Yealland considered that the pain accompanying the use of faradic current was necessary for both therapeutic and disciplinary reasons, especially because of the suspicio

'Shell shock' revisited: an examination of the case records of the National Hospital in London.

During the First World War the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic, in Queen Square, London, then Britain's leading centre for neurology, took a key role in the treatment and understanding of shell shock. This paper explores the case notes of all 462 servicemen who were admitted with functional neurological disorders between 1914 and 1919. Many of these were severe or chronic cases referred to the National Hospital because of its acknowledged expertise and the resources it could call upon. Biographical data was collected together with accounts of the patient's military experience

The Peacock versus the louse (pediculus humanus corporis): one soldier's contribution to combating trench fever in the First World War.

Trench fever became a major worry for the Allied High Command during the First World War because of its debilitating effects on troop performance. The causes of the fever were not previously known, but entomological research identified the body louse (pediculus humanus corporis) as the carrier, and the Royal Army Medical Corps developed effective methods of control through disinfestation. These were markedly influenced by the researches of a young entomologist, Alexander David Peacock, which were conducted under campaign conditions. Peacock subsequently occupied a Chair of Zoology at St. Andre

Wound shock: a history of its study and treatment by military surgeons.

The treatment of wounds has received considerable attention from the time of the Trojan War. However, it was not until the American Civil War that shock was described as an entity distinct from the wounds themselves and that efforts were directed at more than just treatment of the wound. The need for fluid resuscitation in the treatment of hemorrhagic shock was first recognized in the Spanish American War, as was the association of sepsis with shock. World War I showed the need for blood in the treatment of "wound shock," a lesson that had to be relearned in World War II through bitter experie

Medical, demographical and social aspects of syphilis: the case of infected sex workers in Greece during Interwar.

The aim of this research is to present syphilis among women described as "indecent" according to the records of the Venereal Diseases Hospital "Andreas Syggros", which is located in Athens, during the period 1931-1935. In impoverished Greece of the Interwar period, factors such as criminal ignorance, or lack of information on sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) along with inadequate health controls of sex workers, resulted in a dramatic spread of syphilis, whereas "Andreas Syggros" hospital accommodated thousands of patients. The inflow of 1.300.000 Greek refugees from Asia Minor, after the G

The destiny of Italian prisoners in Austro-Hungarian POW camps during the First World War: remembering the defeat of Caporetto 100 years on.

The living conditions of Italian prisoners during the First World War were extremely difficult. At the end of the conflict, the treatment of Italian soldiers in Austro-Hungarian POW camps and in those of the German territories was recognized as particularly harsh in comparison with that of other prisoners. The reasons may be ascribed to three main factors. The Italian prisoners paid the price of being considered traitors, since Italy was allied with the Austro-Hungarian Empire and with Germany until 1914, subsequently switching to the side of France, the United Kingdom and Russia. The Italian

Preventive medicine in Croatia through time and space.

The Croatian preventive medicine was well-known in the world through history. It was famous from the time of the quarantine in Dubrovnik, through sanitary cordon and contribution in obligatory first immunization against smallpox. Croatia presented Andrija Stampar as the leader in preventive medicine from the World War I till the sixties. We owe him all kinds of public health work both in organization and education as well as the initiating the World Health Organization. Knowledge and capabilities of Croatian preventive medicine workers were demonstrated the most clearly during the Croatian hom

War, what is it good for? orthopedics the evolution of orthopedic surgery through armed conflict.

Orthopedic surgery has advanced through the demands of managing complex musculoskeletal trauma on the battlefield. The purpose of this review was to briefly summarize how successive conflicts have shaped principles and practice of orthopedic surgery-from wound management, fracture stabilization, limb salvage, prosthetics, and trauma systems-and to outline possible orthopedic input in future warfare and human exploration. From early empiricism in the Revolutionary War to organized military hospital systems in the Civil War, to the use of antibiotics and internal fixation in World War II, each a

A suitable country: the relationship between Sweden's interwar population policy and family planning in postindependence India.

This article delineates a strong continuity, particularly in terms of personnel, between interwar domestic population policies and Sweden's postwar participation in international and transnational population-control programs. It argues that Swedish engagement in population control and family planning in the emerging Third World, and particularly in South Asia, was motivated by the conviction that poverty and underdevelopment must be attacked on several fronts simultaneously, with population control being one of the most important. In its first bilateral aid programs Sweden would prioritize the

An imperial-royal first aid rescue kit in Austria's high-mountain warfare 1914-1918: antisepsis, antivenin, and water hygiene.

The development of modern first aid around the year 1900 was intricately connected to industrial standardization, bacteriological advancements, and the dissemination of global medical knowledge. This study examines the material culture of military first aid in high-altitude warfare during the First World War, utilizing a first aid kit from the Imperial-Royal Landwehr documented in the Ortler region (South Tyrol). The research integrates object analysis, comparison with manufacturer catalogues and international first aid kits from the era, and historical contextualization. The first aid kit exh

"If Ever a Wreck Came Back from Overseas She Was One": The Treatment and Pensioning of Psychologically Traumatized Nursing Sisters after the First World War.

During the First World War, 2845 women served as nursing sisters with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. After the war, some women developed nervous and mental conditions that they said were caused by their wartime service and applied for military pensions and treatment. So how were these women treated by doctors and pension boards? Men who suffered from psychological trauma were frequently labelled as "cowards" or "malingerers." Many of the symptoms typically associated with nervous cases, such as hysteria, were viewed as inherently feminine at the time but we know little about how this criter
