Vertebral artery dissection is a common cause of stroke in young adults without predisposing risk factors for cerebrovascular disease. We describe the case of a 28-year-old patient who presented with an ischemic stroke secondary to a stab wound to the neck that affected the vertebral artery. A physical examination revealed neurological deterioration (Glasgow 8/15), a sutured neck wound, no palpable hematoma, no thrills, and no active bleeding. A computed tomography angiography revealed a left vertebral artery arteriovenous fistula with a component of a pseudoaneurysm, for which a neurointerven

Sensory and motor neuropathy of the trigeminal nerve due to trauma is quite rare. Furthermore, there have been no detailed reports on occlusal abnormalities and trismus associated with post-traumatic trigeminal motor neuropathy. Here, the authors report a case of trigeminal motor neuropathy and trigeminal sensory neuropathy in all 3 divisions caused by an orbital stab wound. During kendo practice, a 61-year-old man was injured in his right medial canthus with the splinter of a broken bamboo sword. Imaging examinations did not show a brain injury or orbital bone fracture. Intraoral and extraora

A young male presented with a right parasternal stab wound. The chest radiography was normal and transthoracic echocardiography ruled out pericardial tamponade. He remained hemodynamically stable until three hours later when signs of progressive anemia were observed. Chest computed tomography showed massive right-sided hemothorax. The patient underwent surgery, which revealed an active bleeding atriopleural fistula connecting the right atrium and draining into the right pleura resulting from the negative pressure generated during respiration. This mechanism prevented cardiac tamponade and main

Cardiac sequelae of stab chest wounds may be various and dramatic, and the right ventricle is the most commonly injured chamber. Correct diagnosis of cardiac damage may be done up to many years after the trauma. We describe a rare case of isolated, unexpected flail tricuspid valve detected by transthoracic echocardiography in a young patient with remote history of stab chest wound.

An unusual case of damage to the cervical spinal cord due to a non-missile penetrating injury through an anterior route in a nine-year-old boy who fell from a bicycle is reported. There was a cerebrospinal fluid leak that lasted for two days. Clinical picture was that of incomplete Brown-Séquard syndrome and flaccid paresis of the extensor muscles of the left elbow and wrist. Treatment was conservative, with a very good functional recovery. To our best knowledge there is no myelographically documented case report of such a lesion in the literature.

BACKGROUND: Although it is assumed that obese patients are naturally protected against anterior abdominal stab wounds, the relationship has never been formally studied. We sought to examine the impact of body mass index (BMI) on severity of sustained injury, need for operation, and patient outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a review of all patients presenting with abdominal stab wounds at an urban level I trauma center from January 2000-December 2012. Patients were divided into groups based on their BMI (<18.5, 18.5-29.9, 30-35, and >35). Data abstracted included baseline demograph

INTRODUCTION: The spectrum of injury associated with anterior abdominal stab wounds (SWs) is well established. The literature on the spectrum of organ injury associated with SWs to the posterior abdomen, however, is limited.
METHODS: We reviewed our experience of 105 consecutive patients who had established indications for laparotomy managed over a 4-year period in a high volume trauma service in South Africa.
RESULTS: Of the 105 patients, 97 (92%) were male and the overall mean age was 24 years. Fifty-seven patients (54%) had immediate indications for laparotomy. The remaining 48 patients (

This paper presents the case of a 36-year-old man found dead in a forest near his home with multiple stab wounds on the chest and abdomen, while the chest wounds penetrated deep into the left pleural cavity and the lung parenchyma, completely cutting through the bone sections of four ribs along the channels of the wounds. In addition, a kitchen knife dug into the ground was found in the immediate vicinity of the corpse. The deceased was wearing a T-shirt with numerous clearly visible holes in places corresponding to the wounds and quite a large tear at the bottom. The post-mortem revealed 19 d

The files of the Forensic Science Center in Adelaide, South Australia, were examined for all cases listed as suicide in which death had been caused by the use of a sharp instrument during the 20-year period from January 1981 to December 2000. Fifty-one cases were identified, consisting of 35 men and 16 women. The age range was 23 to 83 years (mean 49 years) representing 1.6% of total suicides (51/3182). Fatal injuries included incised wounds to the arms in 51.4% of men (n = 18/35) compared with 87.5% of women (n = 14/16), incised and stab wounds to the neck in 40% of men (n = 14/35) and 25% of

A fatal case of stabbing and cutting is reported which involved a 37-year-old male who suffered from depressive disorder and had already attempted suicide in the past. The postmortem examination revealed 12 lacerations of the scalp, 5 deep incised wounds on the flexor surface of the right forearm, 3 stab wounds of the back of the head, 12 stab wounds of the chest (with cutting of ribs but no injury of heart and lungs), 35 stab wounds of the abdomen and deep incised wounds of both sides of the neck with hesitation marks and incision of the left internal jugular vein. The body of a 20-year-old woman that had undergone significant putrefaction was found lying on the bed of her apartment in a supine position. The legs were straddled and apart from a T-shirt, she was naked. The inner side of the right thigh showed a circumscribed 20 cm x 40 cm defect exposing the underlying muscles. The wound margin was ragged and superficial scratch-type abrasions were found in the vicinity of the injury margin. The investigating police officers classified the injuries to be caused postmortem by a crossbreed dog that was inside the apartment. No other signs of external force

Ureteral injuries reportedly occur in 2-5% of gunshot wounds to the abdomen, and are even rarer in abdominal stab wounds. Ureteral injuries are usually silent and produce no early signs or symptoms. An unrecognized or mismanaged ureteral injury can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. A 34-year-old woman was transferred to our emergency department from another hospital after removal of a knife on her abdomen. She was diagnosed with isolated ureter injury. An uretero-ureterostomy was performed after stenting of the ureteral catheter. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the pati

A five year-old girl was admitted to hospital following an accidental stab wound to the chest, inflicted by a knife placed in a dishwasher's cutlery tray. Investigations revealed a traumatic ventricular septum defect of the heart, with a pericardial effusion. Since the patient remained haemodynamically stable, surgical intervention was considered unnecessary. At the first follow-up, an echocardiogram showed no visible pericardial effusion. At ten month follow-up, she showed initial symptoms of cardiac failure, and a renewed echocardiogram revealed a new pericardial effusion. It is important to

Axillary artery pseudoaneurysms are rare. We report on a 30-year-old patient with a 6.5-cm post-traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the left axillary artery two months after a knife stab wound of the shoulder. The patient showed axillary fullness and signs of severe brachial plexus compression. A surgical repair was undertaken. The aneurysm was excluded and a saphenous vein interposition was performed. The early and late postoperative periods were uneventful. This is probably not only the largest axillary artery pseudoaneurysm ever reported, but also the first secondary to a stab wound.

A 48-year-old man died from a transnasal intracranial stab wound caused by an umbrella. The track of the stab passed from the right nostril, through the sphenoid sinus, the left side of the sella turcica and anterior clinoid process, and finally reached the surface of the brain. The stab wound crossed the left internal carotid artery, causing an exsanguination and aspiration of blood into the airway, resulting in death. It is extremely rare that an umbrella tip used during a struggle would stab the nostril of the victim. Transnasal intracranial stab wounds can be overlooked and require sensiti

This report describes a case of Brown-Sequard syndrome in a man who presented to the ED after a stabbing to the left scapula region. The incidental finding of pneumocephalus found on CT scan during workup lead to cervical MRI that revealed the spinal cord pathology associated with Brown-Sequard syndrome.
