Wrist deformity, bother and function following wrist fracture in the elderly.

OBJECTIVE: Wrist deformity in older people is common following treatment for a wrist fracture, particularly after non-surgical treatment. A cohort of older wrist fracture patients were surveyed by telephone regarding perceived deformity, bother with deformity and patient-reported wrist function. The objectives were to: (1) determine whether older patients with wrist fractures perceived a deformity of their wrist and if they were bothered by it; (2) test if there were associations between deformity and treatment-type and between deformity and function; (3) test for associations between bother a

A comparison of CT arthrography of the wrist to findings during wrist arthroscopy.

PURPOSE: To determine the accuracy of computed tomography after wrist arthrogram (CT arthrogram) compared with findings during wrist arthroscopy as interpreted by a musculoskeletal radiologist and a board-certified hand surgeon. METHODS: Seventy-six consecutive patients who had a wrist CT arthrogram and subsequent wrist arthroscopy were identified in the arthroscopic database of four hand surgeons working at a single institution between 2001 and 2006. Operative findings were obtained from the medical record. A single, blinded, musculoskeletal fellowship-trained radiologist prospectively read

Results of treatment of the extensive volar wrist lacerations: 'the spaghetti wrist'.

'Spaghetti wrist' describes a volar wrist laceration in which at least 10 structures, inclusive of tendons, at least one major nerve and usually one major vessel are divided. This retrospective study, was performed between January 1990 and December 1995 at the Department of Orthopaedic and Traumatology of Erciyes University Medical School. The outcome of 21 patients who sustained simultaneous laceration of the median and ulnar nerves as well as flexor tendons at the wrist is described. The mean follow-up was 6.4 years. The flexor tendons were assessed using criteria from Lister et al. Vascular

Arthrography of the contralateral, asymptomatic wrist in patients with unilateral wrist pain.

To determine the significance of arthrographic abnormalities in patients with unilateral wrist pain, the authors compared the prevalence and site of intra-articular ligament perforation in asymptomatic and symptomatic wrists of the same group of patients and correlated asymptomatic perforation with age, hand dominance and hand overuse. Thirty-seven patients (29 men and 8 women ranging in age from 19 to 61 years) who had unilateral wrist pain and positive arthrographic findings for the symptomatic wrist underwent radiocarpal arthrography of the asymptomatic wrist. Three radiologists blinded as

Adolescent Wrist Pain.

Adolescence is a difficult time, both physically and emotionally. Rapid growth coupled with physical changes in the background of high levels of activity can be overwhelming. Meanwhile, unfamiliar life stressors coupled with undeveloped compensatory mechanisms can lead to overwhelming anxiety and emotional distress. Emotional factors can make injuries and overuse syndromes feel more catastrophic. Occasionally, an adolescent's emotional distress can manifest physically, without antecedent injury or physiologic cause. Understanding the psychological milieu is as important as understanding the di

Dry Wrist Arthroscopy in the Management of Ulnar Wrist Pain Disorders.

The use of wrist arthroscopy has evolved to being a powerful tool to not only diagnose but also treat wrist disorders. With the improvement in technology and surgical technique, many of the procedures can be done using dry wrist arthroscopy (DWA). DWA can be used to treat a wide spectrum of ulnar wrist disorders. In this article, we aim to highlight some technical pearls as well as show its use to treat common ulnar wrist pain disorders.

Activity patterns of wrist extensor muscles during wrist extensions and deviations.

Wrist extensor muscles are prone to certain focal musculoskeletal disorders for which the activation pattern of the extensor carpi radialis (ECR) and ulnaris (ECU) muscles may be important risk factors. Surface and intramuscular EMG of these muscles were recorded during isometric low-force wrist extension in semipronation and pronation as well as for ulnar/radial deviation, and were analyzed using root mean square (RMS) and decomposition methods. Despite shorter ECR length at semipronation, higher amplitudes of intramuscular EMG and of motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) were found in pronati

Industrial wrist motions and incidence of hand/wrist cumulative trauma disorders.

One of the major research voids in the study of occupational hand/wrist cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) is the lack of quantification of the relationship between the known kinematic risk factors, such as wrist angle and repetition, and CTD risk. A previously published article in this journal (Marras and Schoenmarklin 1993) reported the descriptive results from a quantitative surveillance study performed in industry in which worker's wrist motions were monitored on the factory floor. The wrist motion components that were monitored on each subject were position, velocity, and acceleration mea

Pediatric Spastic Wrist Contractures Can Be Well Managed With Wrist Arthrodesis.

BACKGROUND: Severe spastic wrist contractures secondary to cerebral palsy (CP) or alike can have significant implications for patient hand function, hygiene, skin breakdown, and cosmesis. When these contractures become rigid, soft tissue procedures alone are unable to obtain or maintain the desired correction. In these patients' wrist arthrodesis is an option-enabling the hand to be stabilized in a more functional position for hygiene, dressing, and general cosmesis, though are patients satisfied? METHODS: All children who had undergone a wrist arthrodesis for the management of a severe wrist

Sustained submaximal isometric wrist flexion and wrist extension contractions uniquely impair maximal voluntary contraction force in the antagonist wrist action.

When fatigued, the wrist extensors, which are the primary wrist stabilizers, impair distal upper limb motor performance in a surprisingly similar way as when fatiguing the wrist flexors. It is possible that the wrist extensors are so active as antagonists that they develop an equal degree of fatigue during wrist flexion contractions, making it difficult to truly isolate their impact on performance. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine how wrist flexion/extension forces are impaired following either agonist or antagonist sustained submaximal wrist contractions. 13 male participants at

Wrist pressure and angulation during keyboarding: Comparison between two common wrist supports.

BACKGROUND: Wrist pressure and angulation while working at a computer workstation have been associated with cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) like carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). OBJECTIVE: This quantitative, comparative study analyzed wrist pressure and angulation between two common wrist supports while typing at a standardized computer workstation. METHODS: A convenience sample of healthy young adults completed a five-minute typing task at a standardized workstation with no wrist support, with the ErgoBeads™ wrist support, and with an Elzo™ (memory foam) wrist support. WRIST: A WRist Image Segmentation Toolkit for carpal bone delineation from MRI.

Segmentation of the carpal bones from 3D imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is commonly performed for in vivo analysis of wrist morphology, kinematics, and biomechanics. This crucial task is typically carried out manually and is labor intensive, time consuming, subject to high inter- and intra-observer variability, and may result in topologically incorrect surfaces. We present a method, WRist Image Segmentation Toolkit (WRIST), for 3D semi-automated, rapid segmentation of the carpal bones of the wrist from MRI. In our method, the boundary of the bones were iterativel

Replication of Coupled Movements of the Wrist: A Cadaveric Study of Total Wrist Arthroplasty.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine how well the active range of motion and the forces required to achieve motions are maintained following cadaveric implantation of the ball-and-socket style total wrist arthroplasty (TWA). METHODS: An active wrist motion simulator was used to produce flexion, extension, radioulnar deviation, dart-thrower's motion, and circumduction in 14 fresh-frozen cadaveric wrists before and after TWA. Identical tendon displacements were applied to five major wrist flexors and extensors to control motion presurgery and postsurgery. Motion trials were recor

Wrist proprioception-An update on scientific insights and clinical implications in rehabilitation of the wrist.

The field of wrist proprioception, as it relates to rehabilitation and surgery, has gone through a period of intense growth in the past decade. From being primarily focused on the function of the joint and ligaments in patients with wrist trauma or after wrist surgery, the understanding is now that of a greater complexity in treating not just the wrist but the hand and arm as a whole. Proprioception is derived from the Latin words "proprius" - belonging to (oneself) and "-ception" to sense. In other words, how to sense ourselves. To have a complete sense of self, multiple sensory afferents ori
