The wrist/hand complex forms the crucial final link in the kinetic chain between the body and the racquet and therefore has a number of important roles in the production of all tennis strokes. However, the internal and external loads that are created at the wrist during these strokes have the potential to contribute to pain and injury. Therefore, the purposes of this narrative review are to (1) determine the extent of the problem of wrist pain/injury in tennis players, (2) identify bony and soft tissue structures of the wrist that are susceptible to damage as a result of tennis play and (3) ex

This article provides a philosophic overview of the management of athletes at all levels from high school to professional. It further reviews sports-specific injury patterns and position-specific injury patterns. This aspect is crucial, as many injuries may be relatively common for specific sports but rare in the general population, so recognition of these injuries requires a high degree of suspicion. The guiding principles of management are also discussed.

Traumatic injuries of the wrist and hand are common. Ultrasonography (US) is a cost-effective, noninvasive, and effective imaging method for diagnosing traumatic lesions affecting the tendons, annular pulleys, ligaments, vessels, and nerves, and for detecting foreign bodies in the wrist and hand. The objective of this article was to review the main US findings of traumatic lesions in the wrist and hand.

Wrist injury is common and may significantly impair the overall function of the upper extremity unless properly managed. Fractures of the distal radius are particularly common among the aging population, accounting for nearly 1/6 of all fractures, often as a result of increased longevity with the subsequent underlying osteoporosis. New diagnostic tools, including wrist arthroscopy, magnetic resonance imaging, or computed tomography, are increasingly available in developed countries allowing accurate recognition and more effective resolution of lesions which would be otherwise missed using conv

Primary care physicians must be able to recognize wrist and hand injuries that require immediate attention. A complete history and physical examination, including assessment of distal limb function, are essential. Hemorrhage control is necessary in patients with vessel lacerations and amputations. Amputations require an understanding of the indications and contraindications in the management of the amputated limb. High-pressure injection injuries and compartment syndromes require a high index of suspicion for early recognition. Infectious entities include "fight bite," open fractures, purulent

Injuries of the wrist, a complex joint, are common in recreational sports. Often, the clinical diagnosis made is the vague "wrist strain or sprain" unless a fracture is seen on x-ray. A thorough assessment, however (as described in part 1), may reveal any of various injuries and syndromes, including scaphoid fractures, scapholunate dissociation, ganglion cysts, or ligamentous or tendon injuries. Treatment ranges from immobilization to corticosteroid injections to surgical repair of a fracture or underlying cause.

Competitive and recreational athletes sustain a wide variety of soft tissue, bone, ligament, tendon and nerve damage to their upper extremities. Most such injuries are related to direct trauma or repetitive stress, and account for a significant amount of 'down time' for athletes participating in a wide range of sports, particularly those in which the arm is utilised for throwing, catching or swinging. Overuse injuries to the elbow include musculotendinous injuries, ulnar nerve injuries and ligamentous injuries. Osteochondrol lesions of the capitellum and posterior impingement injuries in the j

Athletic injures to the hand and wrist can range from simple sprains to severe fractures or soft-tissue disruptions that can permanently threaten the normal function of the extremity. This article deals with some of the more commonly noted sports-related injures to the hand and wrist to help the team physician make the correct diagnosis and establish the most effective treatment plan, so that the athlete may achieve maximum results and ultimately return to full participation in their sport.

The goal of treatment after any wrist injury is a pain-free, stable joint with sufficient strength and mobility to carry out the daily recreational, and occupational tasks required by the individual. Treatment varies considerably depending on the age of the patient, the severity of the initial injury, the operative procedure performed, and the specific guidelines requested by the referring physician.

The purpose of this study was to analyze radiographic signs of carpal bone instability in patients with an acutely injured wrist. There were 80 patients (52 women and 28 men) with a fall on the outstretched hand. Fifty patients had a fracture of the distal radius, and eight had a scaphoid fracture. The patients with a bone fracture showed a larger scapholunate angle than those without a fracture (P less than 0.001, t-test). However, only four of them showed true carpal bone instability: two patients with a scaphoid fracture and one with a radius fracture had dorsiflexion instability of the wri

Most sports are associated with specific patterns of hand injury. In some cases, these are unavoidable due to the nature of hand involvement dictated by the rules or environment of the sport. In other cases, such injuries point out the need for better protective gear or training.

Wrist arthroscopy was done for one hundred nine patients with chronic wrist pain, averaging 22.8 months in duration. History regarding mechanism of injury, painful crepitus, pain with activity or at rest, localization of tenderness, visible swelling, and instability with examination was compared with arthroscopic findings of ligament damage, articular cartilage damage, and synovitis. Both pain at rest and swelling correlated significantly with synovitis. Tenderness did not correlate with specific ligament injury. Wrist ligament injuries and/or cartilage damage were noted in 96.3% of these wris

Injuries involving tendons, ligaments, and bones are commonplace with many physical activities. Although the majority of these injuries are minor and cause only temporary discomfort, their potential for producing serious and occasionally permanent disabilities must not be ignored. The initial physical and roentgenographic examination of the injured part must be thorough. Only then can the severity of the injury be recognized and appropriate treatment undertaken. Promptness will limit the period of disability and minimize the chances of development of a chronic condition.

This study reports the characteristics, causes and disposal of isolated injuries to the hand and wrist presenting to six accident and emergency departments over a period of 4 months. The rate of isolated injury to the hand or wrist was 6.6%. The male: female ratio was 2.2: 1, with the mean age for injury being 26.4 years in men and 29.2 years in women. The modal age group for injury was 21-25 years in men and 11-15 years in women. The right and left hand were injured almost equally. The dominant hand was more commonly injured although this was influenced by the cause of injury: 16.3% were caus

Despite advances in understanding the anatomy and biomechanics of wrist motion, intrinsic carpal ligament injuries are difficult to diagnose and treat. Even when an accurate diagnosis is made, there is no consensus on the most appropriate and reliable treatment. Injury predisposes to a progressive decline in wrist function and a predictable pattern of degenerative arthritis. To prevent inadequate outcomes, many treatment options exist, all having inherent benefits and complications. This article reviews the complications of intrinsic carpal ligament injuries and complications of their treatmen

Falling on the outstretched hand is a common trauma mechanism. In contrast to fractures of the distal radius, which usually are diagnosed on plain film radiographs, identifying wrist injuries requires further diagnostic methods, e.g., MRI or CT. This article provides a review of the use of MRI in the most common traumatic wrist injuries, including scaphoid fractures, TFCC lesions, and tears of the scapholunate ligament. Early and selective use of MRI as a further diagnostic method in cases of adequate clinical suspicion helps to initiate the correct treatment and, thus, prevents long-term arth

BACKGROUND: The sport of rock climbing has its own spectrum of injuries, almost half of which involve the wrist and hand.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the incidence of acute wrist and hand injuries in 545 members of The Climbers' Club of Great Britain.
METHOD: A total of 1100 questionnaires were sent to current members of The Climbers' Club of Great Britain for them to detail any hand and wrist injuries sustained to date. In decade years, the climbing grades and time spent climbing at each grade were determined. From these results a total and historic climbing intensity score for each climber could
