Comparing the wrist joint position sense and hand functions between children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and healthy controls, and determining possible relationships between these parameters in children with JIA were the aims of this study. Twenty children with polyarticular JIA with wrist involvement (JIAWrist+), 20 children with other subtypes of JIA without wrist involvement (JIAWrist-), and 20 healthy controls were included. Wrist joint position sense was evaluated by measuring joint repositioning error. Hand functions were assessed by using the Purdue Pegboard test, hand grip

BACKGROUND: Overuse of the extensor carpi radialis (ECR) may play a role in the development of lateral epicondylitis (LE). However, no studies have investigated the muscle activity ratio between the ECR and extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) associated with the kinematics during wrist extension in workers with LE.
OBJECTIVE: We compared the ratio (ECR/ECU) of muscle activity between the ECR and ECU and the kinematics of the wrist during wrist extension between workers with and without LE.
METHODS: Fifteen automobile assembly line workers with LE and 15 workers without LE participated in this study

The hand is commonly affected by osteoarthritis (OA). The development and progression of OA are believed to involve inflammation, even in the early stages of the disease. Inflammatory and proinflammatory cytokines have also been shown to be elevated in the flexor tenosynovium of idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). A large percentage of patients with hand OA also have a concomitant CTS. This study evaluated the results of a pulsed electrical joint stimulator in patients who had hand OA with or without CTS. Pain, tenderness, and swelling; grip strength and pinch force; and Patient and Physi

We aimed to examine if joint procedures in hands and wrists of patients with scleroderma could be performed without major morbidity and conducted a systematic review of the literature to assess this hypothesis. Studies were identified in four different databases; soft tissue procedures in scleroderma patients were excluded, and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed. Seven studies out of an initial total of 203 articles were included. One-hundred and twelve scleroderma patients with a total of 402 joint procedures in the hand and wrist were

INTRODUCTION: Ulnar nerve lesions at the wrist (UNLW) are always difficult to localize clinically and sometimes electrophysiologically. Finding conduction block when studying ulnar motor nerve conduction (CB) across the wrist is sometimes the only way to demonstrate that the ulnar deep motor branch (UDMB) is entrapped.
METHODS: An elderly woman who had bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and thumb osteoarthritis for many years experienced worsening of left hand impairment recently.
RESULTS: Electrodiagnostic and ultrasound examinations revealed an acute and severe UDMB lesion related to p

Authors describe the results of the partial selective denervation from radio-volar exposure of the wrist, simultaneously with the osteosynthesis of the pseudoarthrosis of the scaphoid with Ender plates. After a 1-8 years follow up, 3/4 of the patients whose scaphoid pseudoarthrosis was 6.5 years old in average, and had at the operation middle or severe arthrosis of the wrist became symptomless or had only mild symptoms. It is stated that the denervation may be a good supplement of the scaphoid pseudoarthrosis operations and of sanative character performed in the arthrotic stage already.

A kinematic analysis of the movement of the scaphoid, the lunatum and the triquetrum has shown that their turning axes do not correspond with each other. Without arthritis, and within the range of normal motion, the bones move without imposing any appreciable load on the ligaments. They merely guide the bones and hold them together. In the case of arthritic disorders and in states where abnormal frictional resistance occurs, or following trauma, the ligaments are highly loaded. This could lead to increased wear and ruptured ligaments. A series of 20 arthroscopies has shown that LT and SC ligam

The pathogenesis of destructive joint lesions of the wrist in pseudogout is explained using the concept of compartments of the radiocarpal joint and bearing in mind the biomechanical situation. The progressive destruction of the joints in the wrist begins with degenerative changes in the radial styloid, then zigzags through the scapho-lunate joint into the medio-carpal joints and ultimately leads to collapse of the carpus. In its final stage there is a characteristic extensive defect in the radial styloid process. Following cartilage degeneration there is subchondral sclerosis, bone destructio

Lesions of the "discus articularis ulnae" (triangular fibrocartilage) are presented. Possible differences between the left and the right hand, as well as possible age and sex-linked differences were statistically analysed. In 22 wrist the disc was removed. The anatomical and pathological findings correlated with the arthrogram in all cases. Due probably to the advanced age of our study material disc lesions were found to be more frequent than in previous studies. The lesion was less frequent in men than in women. No difference could be shown between the left and the right hand. The arthrograph

Wrist movements play a crucial role in upper-limb motor tasks. As prosthetic and robotic hand technologies have evolved, increasing attention has been focused on replicating the anatomy and functionality of the wrist. Closely imitating the biomechanics and movement mechanisms of human limbs is expected to enhance the overall performance of bionic robotic hands. This study presents the design of a tendon-driven bionic spherical robot wrist, utilizing two pairs of cables that mimic antagonist muscle pairs. The cables are actuated by pulleys driven by servo motors, allowing for two primary wrist

Chondrocalcinosis is a common arthritic disorder among elderly patients. We present a case of a 71-year-old woman presenting with an acute episode of the left forearm with hand swelling. A provisional diagnosis of cellulitis was made and the patient was started on intravenous antibiotics. The patient's condition did not improve. Joint aspiration of the wrist joint was done and showed positive birefringent rhomboid-shaped crystals. A final diagnosis of acute chondrocalcinosis was made.

BACKGROUND: The radioulnar carpal joint is critical for hand and wrist function. Radioulnar deviation indicates distal radioulnar joint flexibility and reflects the structure and function of the carpal bones, ulna, radius and ligaments. The present study examined whether radioulnar deviation is affected by gender, manual labor, playing a musical instrument, playing sport, handedness, previous fracture or prior inflammation. The study used clinical findings based on anatomical landmarks
METHODS: The ulnar, radial and total deviations for both left and right hands were measured in 300 subjects

The incorporation of the third carpometacarpal joint (CMCJ-3) during wrist arthrodesis is controversial. This retrospective study of 146 consecutive wrist arthrodeses with AO plate fixation specifically addresses this question. In 79 wrist arthrodeses the CMCJ-3 was also arthrodesed, and in 67 the CMCJ-3 was simply bridged. Problems relating specifically to the CMCJ-3 could not be analyzed clearly with the plate in situ. Therefore after plate removal only 81 wrists were evaluated with respect to the CMCJ-3. Of 47 wrists that had CMCJ-3 arthrodesis and plate removal, 20 developed a nonunion. El

The work reported here is an assimilation of 8 years of research, the purpose of which was to gain a better understanding of the normal and abnormal workings of the wrist joint. The results are summarized in three major areas of concentration: descriptive anatomic studies, which include direct measurements of cadaver specimens, biomechanical loading studies to define load distribution through normal and abnormal wrists, and three-dimensional (3D) anatomy studies using solid models derived from computed tomographic (CT) images of in vivo and cadaver wrists. The descriptive anatomic studies used

The case is reported of a 75-year old patient with diabetes, who suffered from a typical carpal tunnel syndrome, which was diagnosed by a neurologist. On the X-rays of hand and wrist there were no pathological findings. A small, clinically almost inapparent induration at the palmar and radial side of the wrist was found. Ultrasonography and CT-scan showed a tumor with compression of the median nerve. At operation the authors excised a tumor which on histological investigation was compatible with a soft tissue chondroma. Full recovery followed local excision with decompression of the median ner
