A method for studying regional lung perfusion employing 133Xe is described. Simple radioisotope apparatus with two catheters was used; every isotopic diagnostic department is equipped with it. The possibility of the clinical use of this method was demonstrated in 28 patients with mitral stenosis and in 11 healthy persons. A statistically significant dependence between regional movement of the perfusion to the upper regions of the lungs and the degree of hemodynamics changes in mitral stenosis was noted. Regional and total lung function measurements and chest radiographs were obtained from 18 patients with cancer of the breast from 3 months to 6.7 years after the start of treatment. A control group of 20 patients was studied before radiotherapy but after mastectomy. The functional parameter most affected by radiation was blood flow. In some cases in which the radiographic changes were mild the functional measurements indicated severe vascular damage. The radiation appears to reduce the number and efficiency of functioning lung units within the irradiated region.

Radioactive xenon133 applied epicutaneously was used to study the skin blood flow below the knee in sixteen normal subjects, in eight patients with peripheral vascular disease not requiring amputation, and in a blind study of twenty-nine patients requiring amputation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the rCBF (133Xe clearance method) in migrainous patients free from attack. Fifty patients suffering from migraine without aura (group M) and 20 suffering from migraine with aura (group MA) (age range 20-50 years) were submitted to 32 channel rCBF mapping during the interictal period. Serial measurements of intrarenal distribution of blood flow have been recorded in anesthetized dogs with the (133)xenon "washout" technique. The results showed that normal kidneys redistributed their blood flow after laparotomy and mobilization of the kidney. The discrepancy between three methods for cerebral perfusion imagings in the case of a man with meningioma is presented. Imaging with N-isopropyl-P-[I-123] iodoamphetamine (IMP) showed no activity in the tumor. Imaging with Tc-99m hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HM-PAO) and the local cerebral blood flow (LCBF) image with Xe-133 inhalation showed high tumor activity. IMP is a more accurate method for imaging the brain tissue blood flow.

To evaluate the regional cerebral blood flow measurement with N-isopropyl-p-[123I]iodoamphetamine (IMP), we performed 123I-IMP SPECT and 133Xe inhalation method on 9 patients with mild cerebrovascular diseases and so on. A tracer dose of 123I-IMP (111 MBq) was injected i.v. and the data were obtained 15 min later. Regional CBF was measured by the microsphere model and arterial blood sampling method.
