Yoga is a 5000-year-old practice developed in ancient India by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization. The word yoga means deep association and union of mind with the body. It is used to keep both mind and body in equilibration in all flip-flops of life by means of asana, meditation, and several other techniques. Nowadays, yoga has gained worldwide attention due to increased stress levels in the modern lifestyle, and there are numerous methods or resources for learning yoga. Yoga can be practiced in yoga centers, through personal tutors, and can also be learned on one's own with the help of the Inte

BACKGROUND: Trauma is highly prevalent among vulnerable populations, including those who are incarcerated, in treatment for substance use, or seeking mental health services. Trauma-informed yoga seeks to create a safer yoga practice for individuals with a trauma history and may improve emotional and physical wellbeing. Thus, we conducted an evaluation of a trauma-informed yoga program to gain insight into participant experiences.
METHODS: Trauma-informed yoga classes were led by trained volunteers and held in three sectors that work with vulnerable populations: corrections and reentry, substa

BACKGROUND: The importance of exercise in skeletal health is increasingly recognized by both patients and providers. However, the safety of prescribed or recreational exercise in at-risk populations remains under-reported and under-publicized. Yoga has gained widespread popularity due to its physical and psychological benefits. When practiced in a population at increased fracture risk, however, some yoga poses may increase fracture risk, particularly at the spine, rather than increasing BMD as noted in recent popular press reports.
CASE REPORT: Nine subjects (8 women) with a median age of 66

BACKGROUND: Previously, forced unilateral nostril breathing was associated with ipsilateral, or contralateral cerebral hemisphere changes, or no change. Hence it was inconclusive. The present study was conducted on 13 normal healthy participants to determine the effects of alternate nostril yoga breathing on (a) cerebral hemisphere asymmetry, and (b) changes in the standard EEG bands.
METHODS: Participants were randomly allocated to three sessions (a) alternate nostril yoga breathing (ANYB), (b) breath awareness and (c) quiet sitting, on separate days. EEG was recorded from bilaterally symmet

PURPOSE: Yoga stretching can be done comfortably and easily by beginners and older adults to compensate for lack of exercise or poor health maintenance. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of yoga stretching on mucosal immune functions, primarily human β-defensin 2 (HBD-2) in saliva.
METHODS: Fifteen healthy adults (age, 60.4 ± 8.0 years) participated in the study. Participants rested for 90 min on the first day and performed yoga for 90 min on the second day. Measurements were carried out before and after rest or yoga. Saliva samples were collected by chewing a sterile cotton a

BACKGROUND: Self-esteem and gratitude are important psychological constructs associated with children's socio-emotional development and well-being. Previous studies have suggested that yoga may be associated with emotional regulation, attentional stability, and prosocial functioning. However, few studies have examined whether participation in school-based yoga programs is associated with changes in both self-esteem and gratitude among children. The present study aimed to examine longitudinal changes in self-esteem and gratitude following participation in a structured yoga program incorporating

The tongue is a uniquely agile muscular structure essential for vital tasks of speech, breathing, chewing, and swallowing, functions commonly disrupted following neurological injury. Yet, current rehabilitation approaches lack objective measures and techniques to characterize impairment and restore the tongue's ability. Here, we introduce a clinic-friendly method that isolates and quantifies tongue agility, defined as the ability to execute rapid and precise movements, using a wireless intraoral sensing device that provides real-time visual feedback of movement. Six participants diagnosed with

OBJECTIVES: Yoga, renowned for its ability to maintain physical, mental and spiritual well-being, has recently gained prominence as a supportive therapy during conventional breast cancer (BC) treatment. This paradigm shift reflects a growing trend of people embracing yoga to enhance their overall health and aid in managing BC. The objective of this study was to determine the yoga intervention and inflammatory homoeostasis in newly diagnosed BC patients.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: This study recruited 44 newly diagnosed BC patients at stages II, III and IV (without distant metastasis or other infla

BACKGROUND: Non-specific low back pain is a common, potentially disabling condition usually treated with self-care and non-prescription medication. For chronic low back pain, current guidelines state that exercise therapy may be beneficial. Yoga is a mind-body exercise sometimes used for non-specific low back pain.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of yoga for treating chronic non-specific low back pain, compared to no specific treatment, a minimal intervention (e.g. education), or another active treatment, with a focus on pain, function, and adverse events.

INTRODUCTION: Vaqas and Ryan (2003) advocated yoga and breathing exercises for lymphedema. Narahari et al. (2007) developed an integrative medicine protocol for lower-limb lymphedema using yoga. Studies have hypothesized that yoga plays a similar role as that of central manual lymph drainage of Foldi's technique. This study explains how we have used yoga and breathing as a self-care intervention for breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL).
METHODS: The study outcome was to create a yoga protocol for BCRL. Selection of yoga was based on the actions of muscles on joints, anatomical areas associ

The definition of functional pain syndromes is varied across literature. No effort has been made to see all functional pain disorder groups under broad nomenclature which would exclude conditions for which pathophysiology is strongly known. Since these disorders are commonly treated with alternative treatment modalities and impose significant burden on health utilization, an effort to look into studies on yoga-based interventions on 'functional pain syndromes' (FPS) was made. This study defined FPS as 'Chronic relapsing remitting pain conditions, the origin of which is difficult to trace with

The purpose of this study was to test the effect of prenatal yoga on hip mobility. The secondary aim was to determine the relationship between hip mobility and additional pregnancy outcomes. Hip mobility (hip internal and external range of motion and hip flexor muscle length), pregnancy symptoms, anxiety (State Trait Anxiety Inventory Survey), and depression (and Perinatal/Postnatal Depression Scale Survey), were measured in pregnant women at baseline. All participants (N=20) were then randomly assigned to an experimental or control group. The intervention was a 6-week prenatal yoga program. A

BACKGROUND: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder affecting 5%-10% of the global population and is characterized by recurrent abdominal pain and dysregulation of bowel movements. Many patients do not benefit from full remission of symptoms by conventional treatments. Recently, yoga has demonstrated its potential benefits in various medical conditions including IBS, as a result of its effect on the gut-brain axis. This systematic review evaluates the effectiveness of yoga for the management of IBS.

BACKGROUND: Anterior knee pain (AKP) is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints in adolescents. Several causes have been attributed to this, with many aspects of the pathology being traced back to flawed biomechanics. Yoga has been used as an alternative therapy for many types of musculoskeletal ailments. Although studies have shown that yoga has positive effects on biomechanics, its impact on AKP in adolescents has not been investigated.
HYPOTHESIS: If pediatric patients with AKP were to complete an 8-week yoga protocol focusing on flexibility and strengthening, there would be impr
