Revisiting copper reduction in zeolites: the impact of autoreduction and sample synthesis procedure.

At least two distinct processes occur during heating of the copper-exchanged mordenite in oxygen-free environment depending on the sample synthesis procedure. The first process corresponds to the reaction of Cu(ii) sites with the residual traces of carbonaceous impurities left in the sample after the synthesis without calcination in an oxidant-containing environment, yielding Cu(i) and carbon dioxide. The second relates to autoreduction of Cu(ii) into Cu(i) species accompanied with the release of molecular oxygen. The results show that to completely remove all traces of carbonaceous impurities

Understanding the Reactive Adsorption of H2 S and CO2 in Sodium-Exchanged Zeolites.

Purifying sour natural gas streams containing hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide has been a long-standing environmental and economic challenge. In the presence of cation-exchanged zeolites, these two acid gases can react to form carbonyl sulfide and water (H2 S+CO2 ⇌H2 O+COS), but this reaction is rarely accounted for. In this work, we carry out reactive first-principles Monte Carlo (RxFPMC) simulations for mixtures of H2 S and CO2 in all-silica and Na-exchanged forms of zeolite beta to understand the governing principles driving the enhanced conversion. The RxFPMC simulations show that the p

Sorption and inhibited dehydrohalogenation of 2,2-dichloropropane in micropores of dealuminated Y zeolites.

Contaminant transformation rates in the subsurface can be slowed by sorption onto geosorbents. We evaluated the effect of micropore sorption on contaminant transformation in a model system consisting of dealuminated Y zeolites and 2,2-dichloropropane (2,2-DCP). 2,2-DCP dehydrochlorinates in water to 2-chloropropene (2-CP) at a rate of 2.93 x 10(-4) min(-1) at 24 degrees C. The Y zeolites used range from hydrophilic (CBV-300) to hydrophobic (CBV-720 and CBV-780). Wet zeolite samples were loaded with 2,2-DCP at 24 degrees C and reacted at 50 degrees C for 10 h. Results show that the hydrophobic

Molecular simulation of adsorption and diffusion of chlorinated alkenes in ZSM-5 zeolites.

In this work, adsorption and diffusion of trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in ZSM-5-type zeolites were studied using molecular simulation methods. Grand canonical Monte Carlo technique was to calculate adsorption isotherms and heats of vaporization of TCE and PCE in zeolite. The results demonstrated that the Pnma-P2(1)2(1)2(1) symmetry transition of the zeolite framework has no significant effect on the TCE adsorption capacity of the silicalite, but it causes an increase of the PCE adsorption capacity. Simulations using a silicalite framework with Pnma symmetry showed that

Boric Acid Post-Modified [Al]ZSM-5 Zeolites: Properties, Acidity, and Ethanol/Ethene Conversion.

The effect of boric acid post-modification on [Al]ZSM-5 zeolites is investigated. Boric acid modification reduces surface areas, and high loadings lead to agglomeration of crystals. 11B MAS NMR spectroscopy indicates boron isomorphously substituted into the framework if 1.5 wt% boric acid is applied, while above 5 wt% loading additionally surface bound BT1 species and, increasingly, boric acid deposits BT0 are found. The Brønsted acid site (BAS) density decreases with boric acid loading. 1H MAS NMR spectroscopy after acetonitrile-d3 loading reveals a similar BAS strength as the parent, thus BA

Selective and Reversible Cation-Gating Adsorption Behavior in Gmelinite Zeolites for Efficient CO2 Separation.

Zeolites exhibiting stepwise adsorption behavior, i.e., a two-step increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake, have attracted attention in the field of zeolite research due to the potential to recover CO2 using a small amount of energy. In this study, a Na+-type gmelinite (GME) zeolite exhibited stepwise adsorption behavior due to the migration of Na+ ions in the GME framework. Gas adsorption measurements, in situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis, and magic-angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis revealed that Na+ serves as a gate-opening cation that induces the mig

Fully Copper-Exchanged High-Silica LTA Zeolites as Unrivaled Hydrothermally Stable NH3 -SCR Catalysts.

Diesel engine technology is still the most effective solution to meet tighter CO2 regulations in the mobility and transport sector. In implementation of fuel-efficient diesel engines, the poor thermal durability of lean nitrogen oxides (NOx ) aftertreatment systems remains as one major technical hurdle. Divalent copper ions when fully exchanged into high-silica LTA zeolites are demonstrated to exhibit excellent activity maintenance for NOx reduction with NH3 under vehicle simulated conditions even after hydrothermal aging at 900 °C, a critical temperature that the current commercial Cu-SSZ-13

Ion distribution in copper exchanged zeolites by using Si-29 spin lattice relaxation analysis.

Transition metal-containing zeolites, particularly those with smaller pore size, have found extensive application in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of environmental pollutants containing nitrogen oxides. We report these zeolites have dramatically faster silicon-29 (Si-29) spin lattice relaxation times (T1) compared to their sodium-containing counterparts. Paramagnetic doping allows one to acquire Si-29 MAS spectra in the order of tens of seconds without significantly affecting the spectral resolution. Moreover, relaxation times depend on the method of preparation and the next-nearest

Epitaxial Ga/ZSM-5@S-1 core-shell zeolites boost CO2-coupled propane aromatization.

Mitigating climate change necessitates efficient carbon capture and utilization (CCU) strategies. However, current CO2 conversion technologies are often constrained by their reliance on molecular hydrogen (H2), which is energy-intensive and economically burdensome to produce. Coupling CO2 conversion with alkane aromatization offers a promising solution by utilizing in situ hydrogen species from alkanes. However, the efficiency of such systems is often compromised by the random distribution of active sites in conventional catalysts, which leads to competitive adsorption and inefficient H specie

Unravelling the structure of broadband white-emitting silver nanoclusters stabilized in sulfur-doped zeolites.

The unclear origin of the photoluminescence (PL) in single-phase white-light materials based on silver nanoclusters (Ag-NCs) confined within zeolite hosts has hindered the rational design of composites with tunable emission properties. In this study, we combined X-ray Excited Optical Luminescence (XEOL)-X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) at the silver K-edge and X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) at the sulfur K-edge to unravel the structure of the species responsible for the white emission in Ag/S-SOD zeolites. Our findings reveal that the white luminescence observed in these ma

Unveiling the role of local temperature gradients in individual zeolites containing metal active sites.

The spatial distribution of active sites governs the behavior of solid catalysts, yet how it shapes local temperature gradients and thereby affects catalytic performance remains poorly understood. Here, using the industrially important propane dehydrogenation (PDH) over CoO x confined in silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolites as a model system, we show that catalytic activity and stability are enhanced when CoO x is peripherally confined near the crystal surface (CoO x @S-1-M), rather than uniformly distributed throughout the zeolite (CoO x @S-1-U), which differs from conventional catalyst design strateg

Fibrous zeolites and pulmonary fibroblasts: toxicological impact and EPR-based insights into cellular alterations.

This study investigates the potential cytotoxicity of the carcinogenic erionite and other fibrous zeolites, including mordenite, ferrierite and scolecite. Their interactions with human lung fibroblast cells (MRC-5) were evaluated using biological assays combined with Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. All fibrous zeolites were found to interact with lung fibroblasts, leading to increased intracellular ROS levels and alterations in the lysosomal compartment after 24 h of exposure. EPR measurements after CAT16 incubation provided further insight into cellular membrane interactio

Asphalt VOC Emission Reduction Mechanism Based on Molecular Simulation and Structural Regulation of Zeolites.

To reduce environmental pollution caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released during asphalt application, various porous materials have been used to adsorb asphalt VOCs due to their rich pore structures. However, asphalt VOCs are so complex that emission reduction mechanisms still require further study. In this study, Materials Studio was used to simulate the molecular dynamics of asphalt VOC adsorption by ZSM-5 zeolite. The adsorption heat, capacity, and energy of ZSM-5's adsorption of the main asphalt VOCs was obtained by means of molecular simulation to reveal the adsorption rules

Discovery of ketene/acetyl as a potential receptor for hydrogen-transfer reactions in zeolites.

Hydrogen-transfer is the primary process responsible for elevating the degree of unsaturation of intermediates in zeolite-catalyzed methanol-to-hydrocarbon reactions, with olefins serving as the typical receptor and alkanes being produced as the by-product. Intriguingly, the introduction of CO was shown to suppress the selectivity of alkanes and enhance the production of aromatics, yet microscopic understanding of this phenomenon remains elusive. Here, based on ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and free energy sampling methods, we discover a non-olefin-induced hydrogen-transfer reaction

Biomass Valorization through Catalytic Pyrolysis Using Metal-Impregnated Natural Zeolites: From Waste to Resources.

Catalytic biomass pyrolysis is one of the most promising routes for obtaining bio-sustainable products that replace petroleum derivatives. This study evaluates the production of aromatic compounds (benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX)) from the catalytic pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass (Pinus radiata (PR) and Eucalyptus globulus (EG)). Chilean natural zeolite (NZ) was used as a catalyst for pyrolysis reactions, which was modified by double ion exchange (H2NZ) and transition metals impregnation (Cu5H2NZ and Ni5H2NZ). The catalysts were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction

Adsorption Mechanism and Regeneration Performance of Calcined Zeolites for Hydrogen Sulfide and Its Application.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a very toxic, acidic, and odorous gas. In this study, a calcined zeolite was used to investigate the adsorption performance of H2S. Among particle size, calcination temperature and time calcination temperature and time had significant effects on the adsorption capacity of H2S on the zeolite. The optimal calcination conditions for the zeolite were 332 °C, 1.8 h, and 10-20 mm size, and the maximum adsorption capacity of H2S was approximately 6219 mg kg-1. Calcination could broaden the channels, remove the adsorbed gases and impurities on the surface of zeolites, and inc

Step-By-Step Modeling and Demetallation Experimental Study on the Porous Structure in Zeolites.

The organization of microporous space in zeolites is discussed. A new step-by-step model is proposed that explains the principles of organizing the hierarchy of microporous space at the stage of assembling zeolites from elements of minimal size: a primary building unit, secondary building units, tertiary building units or building polyhedra, a sodalite cage, and a supercage. To illustrate the stepwise hierarchical porous structure of nanomaterials, the following zeolites with small and large micropores have been selected as the model objects: sodalite (SOD, the maximum diameter of a sphere tha

Thermal-Driven Formation of Silver Clusters Inside Na/Li FAUY Zeolites for Formaldehyde Detection.

In this research, the LiY zeolite was firstly synthesized by using NaY as the parent zeolite; thereafter, the LiYAg and NaYAg zeolites created for formaldehyde gas detection were prepared with further Ag+-Li+/Na+ exchange and a mild thermal treatment at 300 °C to promote the formation of luminescent Ag CLs. The spectra experimental results indicated that Ag CLs showed stronger and blue-shifted emissions in LiYAg compared with in NaYAg, and the emission intensity of Ag CLs in both zeolites monotonously decreased when exposed to increasing formaldehyde gas content. Moreover, the linear dependenc

Role of formaldehyde in promoting aromatic selectivity during methanol conversion over gallium-modified zeolites.

Gallium-modified HZSM-5 zeolites are known to increase aromatic selectivity in methanol conversion. However, there are still disputes about the exact active sites and the aromatic formation mechanisms over Ga-modified zeolites. In this work, in situ synchrotron radiation photoionization mass spectrometry (SR-PIMS) experiments were carried out to study the behaviors of intermediates and products during methanol conversion over Ga-modified HZSM-5. The increased formaldehyde (HCHO) yield over Ga-modified HZSM-5 was found to play a key role in the increase in aromatic yields. More HCHO was deemed
