Life Under the Snow: Camera Trap Videos Capture Year-Round Lemming Activity and Behavior.

Studying Arctic animals in winter is challenging, particularly for cryptic species like lemmings, which live within the snowpack for protection from the cold. Winter reproduction is thought to be a crucial component of their cyclic fluctuations, yet little is known about their winter behavior and demography. Camera traps are widely used to study animal ecology, but none are specifically designed for animal life beneath the snow under harsh conditions. We evaluated the reliability of camera traps specifically designed to study the activity and behavior of lemmings under the snow in the High Arc

Feeding Practices, Body Condition, and Estimated Energy Provision in Rescued Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta caretta) at a Mediterranean Rehabilitation Center: A Three-Year Retrospective Study.

The loggerhead sea turtle [Caretta caretta (Linnaeus, 1758)] is the most frequently stranded marine turtle in the Mediterranean and faces substantial anthropogenic threats. No species-specific nutritional guidelines currently exist for its rehabilitation. This retrospective study analyzed feeding practices, feed acceptance, and body weight change in 20 C. caretta admitted to a Mediterranean rescue center between 2020 and 2023. Estimated target gross energy provision, modeled from body-weight percentages, ranged from 11.1 to 22.2 kcal/kg body weight/day under a squid-only regimen and from 18.1

Chromosome-Level Genome Assembly of Strauchbufo raddei and Multi-Omic Insights Into Drought Adaptation.

Understanding how amphibians adapt to terrestrial and arid environments is important for elucidating vertebrate terrestrialization. In this study, we present the first chromosome-level, high-quality genome assembly of Strauchbufo raddei, constructed using PacBio HiFi long-read sequencing and Hi-C scaffolding. The assembled genome is 4.47 Gb in size, with a scaffold N50 of 575 Mb and 94.5% BUSCO completeness, and 99.8% of sequences anchored to 11 chromosomes, providing a valuable genomic resource for amphibian evolutionary and ecological studies. Comparative genomic analyses identified 163 sign

A Lightweight Deep Neural Network for Individual Leopard Identification: Supporting Movement Ecology in the Taihang Mountains of Henan.

Individual identification and tracking of leopards (Panthera pardus) are critical for conserving wild populations and understanding their behavioral ecology. Current methods primarily rely on manual coat pattern matching, which is inefficient for large datasets and makes it difficult to identify subadults undergoing growth-related pattern changes. Moreover, individual-based studies on the movement ecology of wild North China leopards (Panthera pardus japonensis) remain scarce. To address these challenges, we propose LeoNet, a lightweight hybrid deep learning model integrating convolutional neu

Evaluation of Relative Abundance Techniques (RATs) for Monitoring Rodent Abundance and Predicting Rodent Damage in Rice Agroecosystems.

Relative abundance techniques (RATs) are simple and low-cost tools that researchers, agricultural technicians, pest management personnel, and farmers can use to monitor relative abundance of rodent populations in rice agroecosystems. These tools have been developed to monitor rodent abundance in heterogenous habitats but have not yet been evaluated for forecasting rodent damage to rice crops. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of RATs, including giving-up density (GUD) trays, chew cards, wax blocks, and active burrow counts in monitoring rodent abundance and predicting damage in ri

Urban Environments Impact Parasite Diversity and an Antipredator Response in an Amphibian Model.

Urbanization is a major driver of biodiversity loss by transforming ecosystems and imposing novel selective pressures that reshape not only species but also their interspecific interactions. In urban environments, predation pressure is often altered, leading to shifts in antipredator strategies, and parasitism varies with changes in environmental quality and the introduction of novel hosts or vectors. Understanding how these processes are modified by urbanization is particularly urgent for amphibians, the most threatened group of vertebrates, as urban-driven changes may have profound consequen

Snake Gut Microbiota as a Source of Anti-Inflammatory Probiotics: Isolation and Functional Characterization of Two Novel Strains.

The intestinal microbiome is fundamental to host physiological homeostasis, while deviations from its balanced state have been linked to inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). To address the limitations of conventional antibiotic therapies, this study explored snake gut microbiota as a novel source of anti-inflammatory probiotics. We explored the gut microbiota of five snake species (Deinagkistrodon acutus, Trimerodytes annularis, Trimerodytes percarinatus, Lycodon rufozonatus, and Trimeresurus stejnegeri) through metagenomic sequencing. Community composition analysis revealed that the phylum-leve

Photoperiodic regulation of Wnts in spermatogenesis of Brandt's vole (Lasiopodomys brandtii).

Photoperiod regulates spermatogenesis in seasonal breeders, yet its molecular mechanisms remain unclear. The Wnt signaling pathway is critical for spermatogenesis in non-seasonal breeders, but its role in photoperiodic spermatogenesis in seasonal breeders is unexplored. To investigate this, we exposed male Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii), a strict seasonal breeder, to long-photoperiod (LP, 16L:8D) and short-photoperiod (SP, 8L:16D) from the embryonic stage. Testis volume was markedly larger in LP than in SP from 4 to 10 weeks after birth. RNA-seq analysis of 151 Wnt pathway genes reveal

Morphology of male genitalia, legs, and wing venation reveals the classification of Mesozoic Zoraptera (Insecta).

The current classification of extant Zoraptera is based on the results of molecular phylogeny combined with the morphology of male genitalia and supplemented by the characters on the male abdomen and the number of metatibial spurs. However, fossil representatives of Zoraptera have not yet been classified into the modern system, and most of them remain in the catch-all genus Zorotypus Silvestri, 1913, because the genitalia are either not observable or have not been examined in detail. In this study, for the first time, we describe and critically evaluate the male genitalia and other principal d

Conserving Rodent Pests in Transition Toward Endangered Status.

Rodent management has lacked explicit statements of desired outcomes and heavily borrows from invasive non-native species terminology for which eradication is an aspirational outcome. Rodent control, often reliant on rodenticides, invariably takes place in the context of ecosystems heavily modified by agriculture. Together, they are potent drivers of rodent decline and endangerment. I use the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species which is conservative to explore how widespread the transition from rodent pest to endangered rodent is. Twenty-three percent of extant rodent species are of some conse

Genomic Investigations Unveil the Genetic Underpinnings of Environmental Adaptation in African Goat Populations.

In the expansive African region, goats display a diverse array of breeds that have evolved over time to adapt to varying local climates and environments. This study involved the analysis of 1591 samples, including 63 domestic breeds and 164 individuals from wild related species, focusing on genetic diversity, population structure, gene flow, selective signals, and landscape genomics. Our findings revealed lower genetic diversity in wild related species, particularly in the mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus). Gene flow was observed between wild Yura goats and North African populations. Introgr

Foraging Under Competition in Mongolian Gerbils: The Influence of Personality and Its Physiological Basis.

Personality can influence animals' competitive foraging behavior. The state-behavior feedback theory suggests that these personality-driven variations may be affected by physiological states. However, the impact of personality on competitive foraging behavior within a species, as well as the physiological states associated with these variations in personality-driven foraging behavior, remains unclear. In this study, we investigated changes in foraging behavior between bold and shy Mongolian gerbils across three distinct contexts: (1) non-competitive foraging contexts, (2) a competition-introdu

Chromatin Accessibility Profiling of the Canine Brain Reveals Regulatory Programs Associated With Dog-Wolf Divergence and Human Psychiatric Risk.

The domestic dog has emerged as a valuable model for investigating the biology of social behavior and neuropsychiatric disease, yet a comprehensive map of gene regulatory elements across the canine brain is still lacking. Here, we generated an ATAC-seq atlas spanning seven major brain regions and the pituitary gland from four adult beagle dogs. We identified 251,492 putative cis-regulatory elements (CREs) and found that chromatin accessibility profiles resolve anatomically distinct regions into discrete regulatory modules, including striatal, cortical-associated, hypothalamic/habenular, and pi

Relative abundance of Osteolaemus tetraspis in Uwa, Edumanom and Ogbe-Ijaw bushmeat markets in the Niger Delta region, Nigeria.

The dwarf crocodile Osteolaemus tetraspis is globally listed as Vulnerable, yet remains heavily harvested across West and Central Africa particularly in the Niger Delta, Nigeria. This study assessed the spatio-temporal variation in the relative abundance of O. tetraspis across three major bushmeat markets: Uwa (Edo State), Edumanon (Bayelsa State), and Ogbe-Ijaw (Delta State) to inform conservation and management interventions. Bushmeat market surveys were conducted fortnightly between October 2021 and April 2022. All crocodiles encountered were counted and measured across three size classes (

Assessment of livestock depredation by hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) in and around Borena-Sayint National Park, northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: As human populations expand and natural habitats become increasingly fragmented, the interface between agricultural activities and wilderness areas has become a focal point of ecological tension. Livestock depredation is a prevalent form of human-wildlife conflict, particularly in landscapes bordering protected areas. Beyond causing substantial financial losses for subsistence communities, these conflicts often generate negative attitudes toward wildlife, ultimately hindering long-term conservation efforts. Hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas) is distributed across diverse environmen

On the Origin and Evolution of Sweet Taste Mediated by Tas1r2-Tas1r3 in Vertebrates.

Sweet taste is a crucial chemosensory modality for detecting natural sugar compounds, which are primarily derived from angiosperms. In vertebrates, excluding birds, sweet taste is typically mediated by the Tas1r2-Tas1r3 heterodimer, and the receptor function often reflects dietary adaptations to sugar-rich diets. To gain insight into early vertebrate dietary transitions, we identified Tas1r genes in 58 vertebrate species and one outgroup and conducted functional assays in 10 representative species spanning six major clades, including one coelacanth, two amphibians, one squamate, two turtles, t

Environmental Drivers of Geographic Isolation in Three Pika Species in Northeast Asia.

Geographic segregation among closely related species may arise from divergent environmental preferences or constraints of interspecific interactions. For these three congeneric pika species in northeastern Asia, the relative contributions of these mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigates three congeneric species: Ochotona coreana, Ochotona mantchurica, and Ochotona hyperborea, to identify how environmental gradients and interspecific niche relationships jointly shape their spatial segregation. We combined public records with field survey to build species distribution models

Fragment Edges Benefit a Common Predator of Pollinators via Bottom-Up Effects.

Defaunation following habitat fragmentation typically threatens predators at higher trophic levels, which further alter prey and plants via top-down effects. However, few studies test if fragmented habitats (e.g., forest edges) support predators through bottom-up effects. Here, we tested the effects of habitat fragmentation on multi-trophic interactions involving flowering plants, pollinators, and a common predatory spider (Atypus heterothecus). We found that spider biomass was higher at the edges of large islands than in their interiors, with no significant effect of island area or isolation.

Comparisons Between Large-Scale Genomic Variants and SNPs in Driving Population Divergence and Local Adaptation.

Genomic variations, such as indels (2-49 bp) and structural variants (SVs, ≥50 bp), are larger-scale mutations than single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and can substantially impact evolutionary processes, including speciation, adaptation, and phenotypes. Despite their functional importance, integrative population genetic analyses that jointly consider genome-wide SNPs, indels, and SVs remain under-explored. The ground tit (Pseudopodoces humilis), an endemic species to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), exhibits divergence across distinct glacial refugia, accompanied by habitat and morphologic

Some Tuco-Tucos Hide More Than Others: An Integrative Approach Reveals Cryptic Diversity in Ctenomys (Rodentia: Ctenomyidae) From Central Argentina.

The diversity of the subterranean rodent genus Ctenomys remains incompletely understood, particularly in regions characterized by complex biogeographic histories. Central Argentina (Sierras de Córdoba and adjacent lowlands) represents a major zone of biotic convergence, yet its role in shaping diversification patterns within Ctenomys has received limited attention. Here, we adopt an integrative framework (molecular phylogenetics and geometric morphometrics) to reassess patterns of diversity and differentiation across this region. We analyzed cytochrome b sequences and quantified cranial shape
