A Model for Methylmercury Uptake and Trophic Transfer by Marine Plankton.

Methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations can increase by 100 000 times between seawater and marine phytoplankton, but levels vary across sites. To better understand how ecosystem properties affect variability in planktonic MeHg concentrations, we develop a model for MeHg uptake and trophic transfer at the base of marine food webs. The model successfully reproduces measured concentrations in phytoplankton and zooplankton across diverse sites from the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. Highest MeHg concentrations in phytoplankton are simulated under low dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and ultrao

Seawater mercury species and phytoplankton biomass drive bioaccumulation in a coastal plankton food web.

Plankton plays a key role in the bioconcentration and biomagnification of mercury (Hg) in marine food webs. Few studies have investigated the driving factors in coastal plankton food webs. Total-mercury (tHg) and total methylated-mercury (MeHg) were measured in seawater, size-fractioned phytoplankton (0.7 to 60 μm), zooplankton (60 to >2000 μm) and mysids, sampled monthly between February 2020 and November 2021 in the Bay of Marseille (NW Mediterranean Sea, France). Total-Hg and MeHg concentrations varied widely in seawater (193-903, 4-39 pg L-1), phytoplankton (37-5690, 0.02-15 ng g-1DW) and

Interaction of Vibrio cholerae non-O1/non-O139 with copepods, cladocerans and competing bacteria in the large alkaline lake Neusiedler See, Austria.

Vibrio cholerae is a human pathogen and natural inhabitant of aquatic environments. Serogroups O1/O139 have been associated with epidemic cholera, while non-O1/non-O139 serogroups usually cause human disease other than classical cholera. V. cholerae non-O1/non-O139 from the Neusiedler See, a large Central European lake, have caused ear and wound infections, including one case of fatal septicaemia. Recent investigations demonstrated rapid planktonic growth of V. cholerae non-O1/non-O139 and correlation with zooplankton biomass. The aim of this study was to elucidate the interaction of autochtho

Methylmercury accumulation in plankton on the continental margin of the northwest Atlantic Ocean.

Accumulation of monomethylmercury (MMHg) by plankton is a key process influencing concentrations of this toxic mercury species in marine food webs and seafood. We examined bioaccumulation and biomagnification of MMHg in microseston and four size fractions of zooplankton on the continental shelf, slope, and rise of the northwest Atlantic Ocean. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF, L/kg) for MMHg in microseston averaged 10(4.3±0.3) among 21 locations, and concentrations were unrelated to those in colocated, filtered surface water. Instead, concentrations and the BAF of MMHg in microseston were relat

Contrasting Magnitude and Timing of Pulsed Aqueous Methylmercury Bioaccumulation across a Reservoir Food Web.

Water column hypoxia is a key process influencing methylmercury (MeHg) production and availability in waterbodies worldwide. During seasonal destratification, large, short-lived pulses of aqueous MeHg may be released into the subsequently mixed water column, but little is known about the fate of these pulses, particularly whether there are concomitant increases in MeHg uptake into aquatic food webs. We examined the magnitude and timing of MeHg uptake across several trophic guilds relative to the reservoir stratification status using biweekly mercury data from water, zooplankton, and fish (Blue

Evaluating mercury biomagnification in fish from a tropical marine environment using stable isotopes (delta13C and delta15N).

Concentrations of total mercury (T-Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were measured in zooplankton and 13 fish species from a coastal food web of the Gulf of Oman, an arm of the Arabian Sea between Oman and Iran. Stable isotope ratios (delta13C and delta15N) also were determined to track mercury biomagnification. The average concentration of T-Hg in zooplankton was 21 +/- 8.0 ng g(-1) with MeHg accounting 10% of T-Hg. Total mercury levels in fish species ranged from 3.0 ng g(-1) (Sardinella longiceps) to 760 ng g(-1) (Rhizoprionodon acutus) with relatively lower fraction of MeHg (72%) than that foun

Adverse effects of methylmercury (MeHg) on life parameters, antioxidant systems, and MAPK signaling pathways in the copepod Tigriopus japonicus.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a concerning environmental pollutant that bioaccumulates and biomagnifies in the aquatic food web. However, the effects of MeHg on marine zooplankton are poorly understood even though zooplankton are considered key mediators of the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of MeHg in high-trophic marine organisms. Here, the toxicity of MeHg in the benthic copepod Tigriopus japonicus was assessed, and its adverse effects on growth rate and reproduction were demonstrated. Antioxidant enzymatic activities were increased in the presence of MeHg, indicating that these enzymes pla

Astaxanthin and thiamine dynamics in the copepod Temora longicornis in response to ultraviolet radiation exposure.

Several aquatic top predators suffer from deficiency in vitamin B1 (thiamine), sometimes combined with low levels of carotenoid pigments, e.g., astaxanthin. The mechanisms leading to correlations between carotenoid pigmentation and thiamine status are not known. These substances and their precursors are produced by single-celled organisms and transferred to higher trophic levels via zooplankton. However, little is known about the factors regulating this transfer process and how it is affected by environmental stressors and zooplankton diet. We therefore exposed a common copepod, Temora longico

Coupling plankton and cholera dynamics: Insights into outbreak prediction and practical disease management.

Despite extensive control efforts over the centuries, cholera remains a globally significant health issue. Seasonal emergence of cholera cases has been reported, particularly in the Bengal delta region, which is often synchronized with plankton blooms. This phenomenon has been widely attributed to the commensal interaction between Vibrio cholerae and zooplankton in aquatic environments. The role of plankton dynamics in cholera epidemiology has been acknowledged but remains poorly understood, and consequently, its importance in effective policymaking is largely overlooked. To this end, we propo

Algal Density Controls the Spatial Variations in Hg Bioconcentration and Bioaccumulation at the Base of the Pelagic Food Web of Lake Taihu, China.

Algal density can significantly impact mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation and biomagnification in aquatic food webs, but the underlying mechanisms remain controversial especially in subtropical and tropical regions. We conducted a comprehensive field study on Hg bioconcentration in phytoplankton and bioaccumulation in size-fractionated zooplankton across 17 sampling sites in Lake Taihu, a large shallow lake in eastern China with large spatial differences in algal density. The higher algal density in the northern sites is highly associated with the lower THg bioconcentration factor (BCF) in phytoplan

Development of larval Contracaecum rudolphii Hartwich, 1964 (Ascaridida: Anisakidae) in experimentally infected goldfish (Carassius auratus L., 1758).

Laboratory-bred goldfish were experimentally infected with Contracaecum rudolphii, either directly (with nematode larvae) or indirectly via infected zooplankton. Intensity and prevalence of infection were markedly higher in fish exposed to the infected zooplankton than in goldfish exposed to nematode larvae. When transmitted to fish via the zooplankton, larvae developed much faster and, after 8 weeks, became firmly encysted in the intestine wall. The digestive tract of larvae isolated from the intestine wall showed a well-developed ventriculus, ventricular appendix and intestinal caecum. The m

Acute effects of mercury on brine shrimp: First evidence highlighting the molecular mechanism through integrated transcriptome and metabolomic analysis.

Mercury poses significant hazards to aquatic organisms, causing neurotoxicity, and metabolic disorders. Research on the dynamic distribution of mercury within zooplankton is limited, and the metabolic mechanisms of mercury in zooplankton remain unclear. In this study, we employed a mercury-specific fluorescent probe (aggregation-induced emission luminogen, AIEgen) to visualize the in vivo distribution of Hg2+ and MeHg in brine shrimp. Both Hg2+ and MeHg accumulated predominantly in the head, ocellus, midgut, and midgut-hindgut transition, with Hg2+ further affecting the hindgut and anal openin

Spatial patterns of mercury in biota of Adirondack, New York lakes.

We studied the spatial distribution patterns of mercury (Hg) in lake water, littoral sediments, zooplankton, crayfish, fish, and common loons in 44 lakes of the Adirondacks of New York State, USA, a region that has been characterized as a "biological Hg hotspot". Our study confirmed this pattern, finding that a substantial fraction of the lakes studied had fish and loon samples exceeding established criteria for human and wildlife health. Factors accounting for the spatial variability of Hg in lake water and biota were lake chemistry (pH, acid neutralizing capacity (ANC), percent carbon in sed

Influence of Environmental Factors on Seasonal Variation in Plankton Dynamics in Nearshore Waters of Eastern Guangdong, China.

Phytoplankton and zooplankton are critical basal resources in regulating aquatic material and energy fluxes. We investigated how environmental variables shape seasonal plankton abundance and diversity across nearshore zones in Eastern Guangdong, China. We identified 62 phytoplankton taxa (dominated by Bacillariophyceae at 88.52%) and 34 zooplankton species (dominated by calanoid copepods at 36.36%). Redundancy analysis (RDA) demonstrated that seasonal shifts in temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and dissolved nutrients (N, P, Si) significantly drive spatial community variability (Y ≥

Mercury dynamics at the base of the pelagic food web of the Gulf of Gdańsk, southern Baltic Sea.

Planktonic organisms, which have direct contact with water, serve as the entry point for mercury (Hg), into the marine food web, impacting its levels in higher organisms, including fish, mammals, and humans who consume seafood. This study provides insights into the distribution and behavior of Hg within the Baltic Sea, specifically the Gulf of Gdańsk, focusing on pelagic primary producers and consumers. Phytoplankton Hg levels were primarily influenced by its concentrations in water, while Hg concentrations in zooplankton resulted from dietary exposure through suspended particulate matter and

Effect of seasonality and organism size on mercury (MeHg) bioaccumulation in plankton of the Madeira River basin, Western Amazon.

Mercury (Hg) contamination is a serious environmental problem due to its toxicity and bioaccumulation in aquatic communities. In the Amazon, hydrological fluctuations influence plankton structure and abundance, while gold mining constitutes an important anthropogenic source of Hg, releasing the metal into the water column and facilitating its incorporation by biota. In this study, we assessed total Hg (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), and the MeHg:THg ratio in the planktonic community of the upper Madeira River basin (Brazil) over a 10-year period. Mean concentrations of THg, MeHg, and MeHg:THg wer

Grazer-mediated regeneration of methylmercury, inorganic mercury, and other metals in freshwater.

Whereas it is well established that zooplankton can transfer various pollutants such as mercury (Hg) from primary producers to higher trophic levels, less is known on the effects of their activities on the recycling of Hg in aquatic ecosystems. Here, the impact of zooplankton grazing efficiency and excretion/egestion processes on metal concentrations in freshwater was investigated. Isotopically labeled algae (200HgCl2, Me198HgCl) was used as a food source and the transfer of the selected isotopes to the culture medium during grazing was measured. In parallel, the potential for the recycling of

Tissue content of thiol-containing amino acids predicts methylmercury in aquatic invertebrates.

Aquatic invertebrates vary in methylmercury (MeHg) levels among systems which has been attributed, in part, to environmental conditions, but may also be linked to differences in their biochemical composition. As MeHg is known to bind to thiol-containing amino acids such as cysteine in proteins of fish, our objective was to determine if these amino acids explain MeHg variability among aquatic invertebrate taxa. Benthic macroinvertebrates from diverse functional feeding groups and bulk zooplankton were collected from six acidic lakes in Kejimkujik National Park, Nova Scotia, Canada, and analyzed
