Zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures are common facial injuries that often require surgical intervention to restore both function and aesthetics. A variety of surgical approaches, including traditional open reduction and more minimally invasive techniques, have been proposed. This review aims to evaluate the functional, aesthetic, and postoperative outcomes associated with these surgical treatments, based on studies conducted from 2014 to 2024. A systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases was conducted until October 2024. Twelve studies, published between 2014 and 2024

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to develop effective treatment strategies for zygomatic-orbital-maxillary complex (ZOMC) fractures using finite element analysis (FEA) and investigate the mechanical properties and stress distribution of different internal fixators.
METHODS: A three-dimensional (3D) model was created from CT images of a patient with a unilateral ZOMC fracture, and the preinjury craniofacial structure was reconstructed. A cylindrical impactor was used to simulate facial impact. Biomechanical analysis was performed to assess the stability of internal fixation of the fracture li

The standard treatment modality of zygomatic fractures is open reduction and rigid fixation of the fractured segments. Although most of the zygomatic fractures deserve this attentive surgical manipulation to prevent late residual asymmetry, minimally depressed noncomminuted zygomatic fractures can be reduced and fixed percutaneously. Percutaneous intervention causes minimal scarring and morbidity than open techniques and it is possible to align fragments precisely by using high-quality three-dimensional computed tomography (3-D CT) imaging. Six patients with noncomminuted fractures of the zygo

BACKGROUND: Zygomatic arch fractures can occur either as isolated fractures or as a part of multiple facial fractures. There are several techniques available for reduction of zygomatic arch fractures, which include closed reduction and open reduction with fixation using metallic splints, closed reduction via Gillies or a gingivobuccal approach is preferred for minimal invasiveness, short operative time, and low complication rate. The aim of the present study is to present a simple, easy, and reliable method for closed reduction of isolated zygomatic arch fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This

PURPOSE: Zygomatic complex fractures have changed in patterns of occurrence, severity, and, more importantly, in the mode of injury. Protection of the globe and maintaining the width of the face are the more important roles of the complex. Diagnosis and treatment planning of such fractures become imperative in the sequencing of repair if and where indicated, especially in the case of isolated zygomatic complex fractures. Exploring the versatility of ultrasonography (US), in diagnosing zygomatic complex fractures in comparison to conventional radiography in a double-blind study, the objective o

OBJECTIVE: A study was conducted to investigate the relevant applied technique and clinical value of endoscope-assisted repair of zygomatic arch fracture.
METHODS: A total of 10 cases of unilateral zygomatic arch fracture and 8 cases ofunilateral zygomatic fracture were included. Reduction and fixation of the zygomatic arch in all cases were performed via asmall face incision by an endoscope. Endoscope-assisted repair allowed exposure of zygomatic arch fracture and ended the anatomy of the reset. Zygomatic arch was stabilized with titanium plates.
RESULTS: Symmetric malar was achieved in all

The aim of this retrospective research was to establish the association between variables for the surgical treatment of zygomatic complex (ZC) fractures. In a 10-year period, 532 patients were examined for ZC fractures. The medical records of patients were analyzed to obtain information related to sociodemographic characteristics, trauma etiology, sign and symptoms of patients, and surgical or nonsurgical treatment. Statistical analysis was performed using χ test with statistical significance of P < 0.05. Most fractures were sustained by subjects between 21 and 40 years of age (55.8%), being p

Different methods of internal fixation of simple displaced zygomatic fracture, such as wiring, miniplate, and screw fixation, were compared for postreduction rotational stability caused by muscular forces. This study was performed to evaluate the minimally invasive therapy in cases of zygomatic bone fracture. Seventeen patients were treated by percutaneous hook reduction and miniplate fixation along the frontozygomatic suture. Postoperatively, repositioning of aesthetic and stability and also bone ends approximation were assessed clinically and radiologically. The patients were followed up for

It is customary in maxillofacial surgical practice for all patients who have undergone open reduction and or fixation of a fracture of the zygomatic complex to have postoperative radiographs taken before they are discharged. These radiographs are often not reviewed before the patient's departure and in many cases have no bearing on the patient's management. We prospectively reviewed over a 3-month period all patients who were treated for fractures of the zygomatic complex and had no postoperative radiographs. None of these patients had to return to the operating theatre for a further operation

Zygomatico-coronoid fibrous ankylosis of the mandible is a complication which rarely occurs if fractures of the middle third of the facial skeleton have been adequately treated. 379 zygomatic fractures in hospitalized patients were treated at the Department of Jaw Surgery of the Surgical Hospital in Helsinki between 1969 and 1975. 36 cases were characterized by convalescence being complicated by significant restriction of jaw opening. 25 patients were successfully treated by physiotherapy and 6 other by a forced opening of the jaws under general anaesthesia. In the remaining 5 cases 91.3% of t

BACKGROUND: The zygomatic complex is the second most common fracture of the facial bones after the nasal bone. The prominent convex shape of the zygoma makes it vulnerable to traumatic injury. Diplopia is one of the serious complications of zygomatic complex fracture and is a common subjective complaint.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of diplopia in zygomatic complex fractures. Methodology. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Ward, Civil Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan. The duration of the study was 1 year (March 1, 2021 to February 28, 2

BACKGROUND: Due to the complex anatomical morphology and lack of anatomic markers on the surface of zygomatic complex (ZMC), the treatment results of ZMC fractures are often suboptimal.
PURPOSE: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of intraoperative computed tomography (ICT) in the treatment of unilateral ZMC fractures, and further study the feasibility of ICT to replace early postoperative Computed Tomography (CT).
STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, AND SAMPLE: The investigators designed a retrospective cohort study. Adult patients who underwent surgery with unilateral ZMC fractures were enrol

Isolated zygomatic arch fractures are common fractures in maxillofacial trauma. These fractures can trigger a functional alteration in the mouth opening and closing. Until now, there is no published classification of an isolated zygomatic arch fracture that contains the presence or not of coronoid impingement. So we propose a new classification that is easy to handle and has the largest number of scenarios that can occur in this type of fracture. The isolated zygomatic arch fracture is classified as Type I: Nondisplaced fractures, Type II: Greenstick fracture with or without coronoid impingeme

INTRODUCTION: Zygomatic-orbital complex fractures are the most common facial traumas that can result in severe esthetic and functional sequelae. Surgical correction of these fractures is a delicate approach and prototyping is an excellent tool to facilitate this procedure.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 27-year-old man, a motorcycle accident victim, was hospitalized in the intensive care unit for 30days. After this period, facial fractures were treated surgically, leaving sequelae such as enophthalmos, dystopia and loss of projection of the zygomatic arch. A second intervention was planned after one
