The antipruritic and vascular permeability-inhibitory effects of ginsenoside Rb1, a main component of ginseng frequently used as a traditional medicine in Asian countries, and its metabolite compound K by intestinal microflora were investigated in scratching behavior animal models induced by compound 48/80, substance P, and histamine. Ginsenoside Rb1 and compound K orally administered 1 and 6 h before the treatment of compound 48/80 showed antipruritic effect. We investigated the effects of the powders of Spirulina platensis (SPP) on anaphylactic reactions. SPP inhibited compound 48/80-induced anaphylactic shock 100% with doses of 0.5, and 1.0 mg/g body weight (BW). SPP significantly inhibited serum histamine levels induced by compound 48/80 in rats. The effects of opioid agonists and antagonists were investigated on humoral immune mechanisms in mice and rats. Opioid agonists like morphine, Leu-enkephalin, and Met-enkephalin, enhanced antigen-induced histamine release from mixed peritoneal cells of rats in vitro; this enhancement was effectively antagonized by naloxone, an opioid antagonist.
