Neoplasms of the nasopharynx in children.

Neoplasms of the nasopharynx are rare in children, but they threaten the child's life when they do occur. The nasopharynx tends to harbor dysontogenetic neoplasms. After classification into benign and malignant groups, nasopharyngeal neoplasms in children can be further characterized according to the age of the patients in which the clinical manifestations usually appear. Dermoids and teratomas are the most frequently encountered neoplasms of the nasopharynx in infants and may produce airway obstruction and dysphagia. Among the benign tumors of the nasopharynx in children, the juvenile angiofi

Solitary oral fibromas of the tongue show similar morphologic features to fibrous papule of the face: a study of 31 cases.

The morphologic similarities between fibrous papules of the face and multiple oral fibromas were mentioned long ago, mainly in the context of phakomatoses. Both lesions have been considered to be different types of angiofibromas. Nonetheless, this interpretation is not accepted by all authors. We tried to investigate if solitary oral fibromas also share morphologic features with fibrous papules of the face. For this purpose, we designed a retrospective study retrieving 31 fibromas of the tongue from 30 different patients and studied a control group of 20 fibrous papules of the face from 20 dif

Diagnostic and surgical challenges in the pediatric skull base.

Advances in management of adult skull base pathologies are increasingly being applied in children. Pediatric patients present special challenges because of their smaller anatomy, but potential gains in reduced morbidity make improvements in skull base approaches well worth pursuing.

Oral health management implications in patients with tuberous sclerosis.

We report 6 cases of patients with tuberous sclerosis and concomitant dental pathosis. The multiple manifestations in tuberous sclerosis determine its impact on dental therapy. A lack of awareness of this condition may compound the possible side effects of dental treatment. Possible preventive measures by dentists are highlighted in this presentation. Medical evaluation and the control of risk factors in relation to general anesthesia and sedation are key considerations for the management of patients with tuberous sclerosis.

Tuberous sclerosis complex consensus conference: revised clinical diagnostic criteria.

At the recent tuberous sclerosis complex consensus conference, the clinical diagnostic criteria for tuberous sclerosis complex were simplified and revised to reflect both new clinical information about tuberous sclerosis complex and an improved understanding of the disorder derived from molecular genetic studies. Based on this new information, some clinical signs once regarded as pathognomonic for tuberous sclerosis complex are now known to be less specific. No single sign is present in all affected patients, and there is no proof that any single clinical or radiographic sign is absolutely spe

Pyogenic Granuloma in the Sinonasal Cavity: A Potential 38-Year Latency Following Foreign Body Entrapment.

BACKGROUND: Lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH), also known as pyogenic granuloma (PG), is a benign vascular lesion typically associated with minor trauma or irritation, predominantly occurring in the oral cavity and in females. Its sinonasal occurrence, particularly in males, is rare, and an association with remote childhood trauma remains a speculative hypothesis. Clinically, it must be differentiated from other vascular sinonasal lesions such as angiofibroma, hemangioma variants, and malignant mimics. CASE PRESENTATION: This rare case report descripts a highly unusual case of an inflammator

Retrospective Study of Pediatric Sinonasal Tumors in a Tertiary Hospital Setting.

BACKGROUND Pediatric sinonasal tumors are rare, accounting for about 4% of all pediatric head and neck neoplasms. Due to their nonspecific symptoms such as nasal obstruction, epistaxis, and facial pain, these tumors often present diagnostic challenges and lead to delays in managment. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial to optimize clinical outcomes. CASE REPORT This is a retrospective review of 4 pediatric patients with diagnosis of sinonasal tumors at a tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia. The series includes 2 benign tumors, osteoma and juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, and 2 malignant

Giant cell-rich solitary fibrous tumour of the urinary bladder: case report of an unusual histological variant and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Giant cell-rich solitary fibrous tumour (GCR-SFT), previously referred to as giant cell angiofibroma, is an uncommon soft tissue tumour that classically occurs in the orbit but very rarely presents in deep organs. Here, we present a case of GCR-SFT occurring in the urinary bladder, which is one of the unusual histological subtypes of SFT. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old man was incidentally found to have a mass measuring 4.5 × 4.3 × 4.0 cm located in the left posterior wall of the bladder by computed tomography during a physical examination. The lesion was confirmed as GCR-SFT by

De novo mutation of the TSC2 gene in patient with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex-Associated Neuropsychiatric Disorders (TAND) Phenotype: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a neurocutaneous disease caused by a mutation in the TSC1 or TSC2 gene. There are several neuropsychiatric manifestations associated with TSC known as TSC-associated neuropsychiatric disorder (TAND). This article concerns neuropsychiatric manifestations in children with the TSC2 gene mutation, with genetic analysis findings using whole-exome sequencing. CASE: A 17-year-old girl presented with TSC, absence and focal epilepsy, borderline intellectual functioning, organic psychosis, and renal angiomyolipoma. She was emotionally unstable and preoccu

Omental mass combined with indirect inguinal hernia leads to a scrotal mass: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary omental tumors are uncommon, and omental fibromas account for 2% of these tumors. Due to the low incidence of omental fibromas and the limited relevant literature, it is challenging for clinicians to make an accurate diagnosis of this condition, especially before surgery. CASE SUMMARY: A 30-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of a left epididymal mass with vague discomfort for more than 1 mo. A physical examination was performed, and the findings showed that the epididymal mass may have entered the abdominal cavity. Pelvic computed tomography was performed in

Rare Mesenchymal Tumors of the Pelvis: Imaging and Pathologic Correlation.

Most pelvic tumors originate from the organs. Less commonly, tumors can arise from the various anatomic pelvic compartments and are comprised of mesenchymal tissue: muscles, connective tissue, vessels, lymphatics, and fat. Among some of the rarer entities are benign tumors (eg, angiomyxoma, cellular angiofibroma, and desmoid fibromatosis), malignant tumors (eg, sarcoma), and tumors that can manifest as benign or malignant (eg, solitary fibrous tumor or nerve sheath tumor). Because these tumors are uncommon and often manifest with nonspecific clinical features, imaging (usually MRI) is an initi

Solitary fibrous tumour of the female genital tract: a clinicopathological analysis of 25 cases.

AIMS: Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is an uncommon spindle cell neoplasm of fibroblastic origin, first described as a tumour of the pleura and now well established at extrapleural sites. However, SFT in the female genital tract is rare and therefore not fully characterised. Here, we describe a series of 25 SFTs arising throughout the gynaecological tract, including the vulva (14 cases), vagina (one), cervix (one), uterus (six), ovary (two), and fallopian tube (one). METHODS AND RESULTS: The tumours showed classic histology as well as known variant morphological features, including a fatty com
