One-hundred and fifteen anisakid larvae from 3 different fish hosts, Aphanopus carbo, Scomber japonicus, and Trachurus picturatus, caught in Madeiran waters, were identified by PCR-RFLP. Three distinct species were identified in A. carbo, namely Anisakis simplex sensu srricto, Anisakis pegreffii, and Anisakis ziphidarum; 5 in S. japonicus, i.e., A. simplex s.s., A. pegreffii, Anisakis physeteris, Anisakis typica, and A. ziphidarum; and 3 in T. picturatus, i.e., A. simplex s.s., A. pegreffii, and A. typica. Anisakis simplex s.s. was the most frequent species in both A. carbo and S. japonicus (5

Parasitic infections can induce immunomodulatory effects that may influence host responses to vaccination. Chronic exposure to Anisakis antigens could modify T-cell and antibody profiles, potentially affecting SARS-CoV-2 vaccine effectiveness in endemic populations. We aimed to determine whether prior exposure to Anisakis alters SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-induced immunity. Forty healthy volunteers were evaluated at five time points before and after receiving either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines. Serum levels of anti-Anisakis and anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were quantified

Immunosuppression in sepsis reduces both αβ and γδ T cell subsets. Anisakis sp. is a parasitic nematode with a high prevalence in Spain. Previous contact with the parasite is related to a decrease in γδ T cells. Anti-Anisakis antibodies were measured and related to αβ and γδ T cells in 114 septic patients versus 97 healthy controls. Significant differences were seen with respect to the groups with severe sepsis and septic shock where lower anti-Anisakis levels were observed. A similar decrease appeared in the case of specific IgM with significant differences between the groups of control/uncom

The cinnamon flounder Pseudorhombus cinnamoneus is a frequently consumed marine fish in China. However, the occurrence of ascaridoid larvae in P. cinnamoneus remains unclear. In the present study, a total of 85 P. cinnamoneus caught from the Yellow Sea (off Shidao, 36°52'57″N, 122°26'42″E) in 2011, which is located between mainland China and the Korean Peninsula, was investigated for ascaridoid larval infection. Four ascaridoid larval types, including Anisakis type I of Berland (1961), Hysterothylacium type of Smith (1983), Hysterothylacium type HL of Guo et al. (2014) and Raphidascaris type o

The prevalence of infection and the identification of anisakid larvae in chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) from the Namdae River, the east coast of Korea, were investigated. In total, 8,358 larvae were collected from 120 fish samples (male = 58 fish, female = 62 fish) in 2008. Fish samples were collected during October and November 2008. All the chum salmon samples (120/120, 100%) caught were infected with anisakid larvae with a high intensity (69.65 ± 48.58 larvae/host). They were mostly found in muscles (98.00%). Based on the morphological and the molecular analysis of PCR-RFLP and sequencing

Anisakids of Scomber japonicus, Trachyrincus scabrus, Sardina pilchardus, Merluccius polli, Trachurus trachurus, and Hoplostethus cadenati from African shelf are reported. Parasites were extensively studied with respect to their morphology and sequence analysis of the rDNA fragment (containing internal transcribed spacer [ITS]-1, 5.8S subunit and ITS-2); all of them are approximately 1,000 base pairs. Digestion of the amplified region and its sequencing revealed the presence of a sibling species (A. simplex s.s. and A. pegreffii). Still other sequences represented closely related, but not sibl

Natural (parasite-driven) and sexual selection are thought to maintain high polymorphism in the genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), but support for a link between mate choice, MHC variation and increased parasite resistance is circumstantial. We compared MHC diversity and Anisakis loads among anadromous Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) returning to four rivers to spawn, which had originated from natural spawning (parents allowed to mate freely) or artificial crosses (parents deprived from the potential benefits of mate choice). We found that the offspring of artificially bred

The nematode Anisakis simplex causes anisakidiasis, a disease that often mimics other gastrointestinal diseases. Patients with digestive haemorrhaging, Crohn's disease, digestive cancer and appendicitis were analysed for antibodies to A. simplex. Antibody detection was carried out by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunoblotting using crude extract (CE) antigen and excretory-secretory (ES) products. Total immunoglobulin (Igs), IgG, IgM, IgA and IgE were studied. The highest percentage was obtained when Igs were tested against CE antigen. A higher percentage of positivity was obs

BACKGROUND: Diamine oxidase (DAO) is a polyamine-degrading enzyme also implicated in histamine metabolism. Chronic urticaria (CU) has a wide spectrum of clinical presentations and causes. Anisakis sensitisation associated chronic urticaria (CU+) has been characterised as a phenotype with different clinical and immunological characteristics and possibly associated with previous acute parasitism. We aimed to analyse serum DAO levels in different CU phenotypes. We further analysed the possible association of DAO with fish eating habits.
METHODS: We studied 35 CU+ patients and 39 non-sensitised C

In this study, we researched the presence of anisakids in specimens of Merluccius merluccius caught in the area of Little Sole Bank, in the Northeast Atlantic, and found that 100% of the European hake examined were infected and showed high average values of abundance (976.88) and intensity (976.88). The larvae were identified in morphological terms as morphotype type I and in molecular terms as Anisakis simplex s.s via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) restriction fragment length polymorphism of the rDNA. The genetic variability of the A. simplex s.s population in the North Atlantic is notable,

The main aim of this work was to assign the cuticular lipids identified in a parasitic nematode and to distinguish those originating from its host. The hypothesis that long-chained fatty acids and sterols are imported by the parasite in the absence of certain enzymes was also tested. The organisms (Anisakis simplex and Gadus morhua) were extracted in petroleum ether and dichloromethane. Matrix-assisted laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) was used to identify unknown components, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI/MS) to verify recognized groups of lipid

High prevalence and intensity of infection with anisakid larvae has been reported in commercially important fish in Spain. Likewise, Kudoa-infected fish have lately been detected in both fresh and frozen fish. In the present study the possible relation between appendectomy and specific antibodies to these fish parasites was investigated. One hundred and sixty patients were enrolled in this study. They were divided into two groups of eighty patients each and matched for sex and age: Group 1 (appendectomized) and Group 2 (control group). Total immunoglobulins (Ig's), IgG, IgM, IgA and IgE agains

Anisakiosis is a nematodosis with high prevalence in Spain. In this work we (a) investigated whether a recently introduced ELISA of Anisakis simplex-specific IgE in serum suffers from cross-reactivity with other common allergens; (b) used this assay to obtain an estimate of the prevalence of A. simplex-specific IgE in the population of Madrid; and (c) related positivity to fish consumption habits. No evidence of cross-reactivity between the ELISA and other allergens was found. The prevalence of positivity was 12.4% (11.7% among healthy subjects and 16% among patients with non-digestive non-all

Anisakis infection parameters were studied in horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) taken from two areas of northern Morocco (Tetouan and Tangier), which showed a mean prevalence of 54.9%. Identification of the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 fragment by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) showed A. pegreffii to be the dominant species; no A. simplex s.s. were detected. The presence of A. pegreffii in horse mackerel was not influenced by the sex (P = 0.46) or catch area (Atlantic versus Mediterranean, P = 0.52) of the fish, but was significantly related to their length,

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic enteritis is a rather rare condition characterized by infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract by eosinophils; as a casue of acute abdomen it is really exceptional. The etiology is unclear and its description in the literature is sparse, but associations have been made with collagen vascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, food allergy and parasitic infections as it was confirmed in one of our pathologic studies.
CLINICAL CASES: From 1997 to 2011 six cases of eosinophilic enteritis that involved a small bowel segment were diagnosed. A partial resection by an ir

Samples obtained from 11 teleost fish species collected in waters off of the Mediterranean coasts of Sicily, Italy, were examined for the presence of Hysterothylacium spp. larvae. In total, 3,017 fish samples were examined, and the larvae recovered were used in subsequent phylogenetic studies. Fifty-eight raphidascaridid parasitic nematodes were found in the examined fish, with prevalence values ranging from 0.2% in anchovies to 60% in forkbeard samples. Twenty-seven parasites were identified as Hysterothylacium fabri and Hysterothylacium aduncum by sequencing the following regions: the nuclea

Anisakids from 5 different species of cetacean, Kogia breviceps, Peponocephala electra, Stenella clymene, Stenella longirostris and Steno bredanensis, were submitted to genetic analysis. Adults and larvae fixed in ethanol-formalin-acetic acid or in 70% ethanol for periods ranging from 10 months to 10 years were isolated from 9 cetaceans stranded on Ceará coast, Northeast Brazil. The 18S rDNA gene, ITS1, and specific Anisakis typica ITS regions were amplified by PCR. 18S rDNA and ITS1 region confirmed Anisakis sp. morphological identification but also detected the presence of Aspergillus sp. in

The parasite faunas of juvenile English sole (Parophrys vetulus) in 1971-1972 and staghorn sculpin (Leptocottus armatus) in 1971 from Yaquina Bay, Oregon, were compared with faunas found in the same estuary in 1997-2000 (English sole) and 1999-2000 (staghorn sculpin). The 7 most commonly occurring parasites in 1971 were compared with the same species observed during the same month and sampling sites in 1997-2000. Multivariate community analysis of juvenile English sole parasites supported the suggestion that the 1971 parasite data were representative of the early-1970s time period. Four of the

We used ELISA and immunoblotting to investigate antigenic cross-reactivity in mice between third-stage larvae of Anisakis simplex and five other nematodes: the ascaridoids Ascaris suum, Toxocara canis and Hysterothylacium aduncum, and the nonascaridoids Trichinella spiralis and Trichuris muris. Two sera were raised against each species (including A. simplex, but excluding A. suum), by infection or by immunization with somatic antigens. Serum against A. suum was raised by immunization only. The reactivities of each serum with A. simplex somatic antigens (SA), excretion-secretion antigens (ES),
