Long-term variability of metals from fungicides applied in amended young vineyard fields of La Rioja (Spain).

The long-term variability of total Cu content from fungicides applied in a certified wine region of Spain (La Rioja) and of other metals (Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn) was evaluated in three young vineyard soils and subsoils unamended and amended with spent mushroom substrates (SMS) over a 3-year period (2006-2008). SMS is a promising agricultural residue as an amendment to increase the soil organic matter content but may modify the behaviour of metals from pesticide utilisation in vineyards. Fresh and composted SMS was applied each year at a rate of 25 t ha(-1) (dry-weight). Copper concentrations i

Comparison of transport mechanisms in isolated ascending and descending rat colon.

The mechanisms of water and ion transport in ascending and descending rat colon were compared using an everted open mucosal sac preparation. Net water flux, measured gravimetrically, was similar in both segments (15.3 plus or minus 1.2 and 13.7 plus or minus 1.3mul h(-1) mg(-1), NS). Net catonic flux J(Na+K),net anionic flux J(Cl-HCO3), and net solute flux Josm were also similar; but the constituents of these flux , namely JNA, JK, and JHCO3, were significantly different. The descending colon absorbed significantly less Na and secreted significantly more HCO3. Only the descending colon absorbe

Long-Term Organic Amendment Systems Are Associated with Pore-Aggregate Structure, Root Traits, and Labile Organic Carbon Allocation in a Brown Soil.

Organic amendments can alter soil structure, root development, and carbon cycling, yet their coordinated effects remain unclear. Based on a long-term field microplot experiment established in 2009, four amendment systems with equivalent annual N, P, and K inputs but differing in amendment properties and nominal annual organic-material C inputs were compared: maize straw with NPK (CS), pig manure compost with NPK (PMC), biochar with NPK (BIO), and biochar-based fertilizer (BF). After 15 years, dry-sieved aggregate distribution, CT-resolved air-filled pores (>30 μm), peanut root morphology, and

Microplastic and nanoplastic interactions with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in soils: a critical review of main findings and knowledge gaps.

Microplastics (MPs), nanoplastics (NPs), and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) can enter soils through biosolids, compost, landfill leachate, reclaimed-water irrigation, treated textiles, and industrial releases. However, whether plastic particles modify PFAS fate in terrestrial environments remains uncertain because most evidence derives from simplified laboratory conditions. This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework and identified 430 records from Scopus (n = 208) and Web of Science (n = 222). After screening, envi

Long-Term Biochar Application Enhances Peanut Yield by Delaying Leaf Senescence and Optimizing Nutrient Balance.

Premature leaf senescence during the late growth stage of Arachis hypogaea (peanut) reduces photosynthetic capacity and restricts pod filling, thereby limiting yield. Although biochar has been widely used for soil improvement due to its porous structure and stability, its long-term effects on sustaining photosynthetic performance and improving yield through nutrient regulation remain insufficiently understood. Based on a long-term field micro-plot experiment established in 2009, four fertilization treatments were evaluated: maize straw return + NPK (CS), pig manure compost + NPK (PMC), biochar

Degradation of Wheat Straw by Streptomyces thermocarboxydus XH2: Insights from Genomic and Transcriptomic Analyses.

Crop straw is an abundant lignocellulosic resource, but its efficient bioconversion is hindered by the recalcitrant structure of plant cell walls. This study integrated degradation phenotyping, enzyme activity assays, whole-genome analysis, and comparative transcriptomics to link the wheat-straw degradation performance of strain XH2 with its enzymatic and molecular responses. Strain XH2 was isolated from fully decomposed compost collected in Anhui Province, China, selected based on the formation of a distinct hydrolysis halo on CMC-Congo red agar, and deposited in the China Center for Type Cul

Widespread prevalence of plasmid-mediated blaCTX-M type extended-spectrum beta-lactamase Escherichia coli in backyard broiler production systems in the United States.

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) Escherichia coli (E. coli) is an emerging pathogen of high concern given its resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins. Broiler chicken, which is the number one consumed meat in the United States and worldwide, can be a reservoir of ESBL E. coli. Backyard poultry ownership is on the rise in the United States, yet there is little research investigating prevalence of ESBL E. coli in this setting. This study aims to identify the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance profiles (phenotypically and genotypically) of ESBL E. coli in some backyard and comm

Variation in the Chemical Sensitivity of Earthworms from Field Populations to Imidacloprid and Copper.

The chemical risk of pesticides for nontarget soil macroorganisms has mainly been assessed using the compost earthworm Eisenia fetida. However, E. fetida does not occur in agroecosystems, and it is generally less sensitive than other earthworm species. Thus, the extrapolation of its response to pesticides to other earthworm species may lead to uncertainties in risk assessment. Because toxicity data for other earthworms are scarce, we assessed the chemical sensitivity of five species (Allolobophora chlorotica, Aporrectodea caliginosa, Aporrectodea longa, Aporrectodea rosea, and Lumbricus rubell

A Rare Case of Pulmonary and Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis Due to Rhizopus spp. in a Child with Chronic Granulomatous Disease.

Mucormycosis is a rare but serious fungal infection caused by a mold family known as the Mucorales. These fungi exist throughout the environment, especially in the soil, leaves, compost piles, or decaying woods. Humans contract mucormycosis by coming in contact with the spores from fungus either by inhalation or through cuts on the skin. The population at risk for this life-threatening infection includes diabetes mellitus patients, cancer patients, premature infants, burn patients, and immunocompromised patients. The fungi that most commonly cause mucormycosis are the Rhizopus species, and the

A cross-sectional study examining Campylobacter and other zoonotic enteric pathogens in dogs that frequent dog parks in three cities in south-western Ontario and risk factors for shedding of Campylobacter spp.

An estimated 6 million pet dogs live in Canadian households with the potential to transmit zoonotic pathogens to humans. Dogs have been identified as carriers of Salmonella, Giardia and Campylobacter spp., particularly Campylobacter upsaliensis, but little is known about the prevalence and risk factors for these pathogens in pet dogs that visit dog parks. This study examined the prevalence of these organisms in the faeces of dogs visiting dog parks in three cities in south-western Ontario, as well as risk factors for shedding Campylobacter spp. and C. upsaliensis. Half-organic substitution combined with dicyandiamide (DCD) reduces N2O and NO emissions from tea plantations: a field study and global assessment.

Acidic tea plantation soils with high nitrogen (N) inputs are recognized hotspots for nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO) emissions. However, field evidence on the combined effects of organic manure and a nitrification inhibitor (dicyandiamide, DCD) on both gases remains scarce, and previous global budgets have considered N2O only, leaving combined NO + N2O unquantified. Here, a replicated field experiment using static closed chambers was conducted in a subtropical tea plantation. Seven treatments were established: urea (CN), composted chicken manure (OM), and their 1:1 combination (HOM)

A versatile Bacillus esterase reveals a carboxylesterase blueprint for PET intermediate degradation.

The biodegradation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and its derived intermediate breakdown products, represents a core focus of multidisciplinary research. While Ideonella sakaiensis PETase (IsPETase) and leaf-compost cutinase (LCC) efficiently depolymerize PET, many other PET-active hydrolases display stronger activity toward soluble PET intermediates such as bis- and mono(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET and MHET). Here, we describe a versatile carboxylesterase derived from Bacillus halotolerans (BhEstB). BhEstB is structurally related to BsEstB from B. subtilis but divergent from can

Impacts of dairy manure and synthetic fertilizers on greenhouse gas emissions and crop yields: A global meta-analytical comparison.

Dairy manure (DM) is commonly used as an organic nutrient source to improve soil fertility. However, concerns remain about its potential to increase greenhouse gas emissions and reduce crop yields compared to synthetic fertilizers (SF). This global meta-analysis evaluated and compared the effects of DM and SF applications on greenhouse gas emissions and crop yields, considering different soil properties (texture, pH), nitrogen application rates, crop types, water managements, and climate zones. Additionally, the influence of different DM types and placement methods were examined. Results showe

Integrated short peripheral intravenous cannulas and risk of catheter failure: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Short peripheral catheters (SPCs) are used to provide intravenous therapies in hospitalized patients. Recently, the category of SPC has become more complex, with the introduction in clinical practice of "integrated" SPCs (ISPCs), renewed regarding the material (polyurethane rather than polytetrafluoroethylene) and design (large wing; pre-assembled extension; preassembled needle-free connector (NFC)). METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to analyze randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-randomized studies in hospitalized patients, analyzing the risk of ove

Simultaneous immobilization strategy of anionic metalloids and cationic metals in agricultural systems: A review.

Concurrent heavy metals remediation in natural environments poses significant challenges due to factors like metal speciation and interactions with soil moisture. This review focuses on strategies for immobilizing both anionic and cationic metals simultaneously in soil-crop systems. Key approaches include water management, biochar utilization, stabilizing agents, nanotechnology, fertilization, and bioremediation. Sprinkler or intermittent irrigation combined with soil amendments/biochar effectively immobilizes As/Cd/Pb simultaneously. This immobilization occurs through continuous adsorption-de

A planetary health innovation for disease, food and water challenges in Africa.

Many communities in low- and middle-income countries globally lack sustainable, cost-effective and mutually beneficial solutions for infectious disease, food, water and poverty challenges, despite their inherent interdependence1-7. Here we provide support for the hypothesis that agricultural development and fertilizer use in West Africa increase the burden of the parasitic disease schistosomiasis by fuelling the growth of submerged aquatic vegetation that chokes out water access points and serves as habitat for freshwater snails that transmit Schistosoma parasites to more than 200 million peop

Effects of two-dose ceftiofur treatment for metritis on the temporal dynamics of antimicrobial resistance among fecal Escherichia coli in Holstein-Friesian dairy cows.

A pair-matched longitudinal study conducted on three dairy farms in the U.S. High-Plains explored the temporal effects of two-dose ceftiofur crystalline-free acid (CCFA) treatment for metritis on third-generation cephalosporin (3GC) resistance among enteric E. coli in Holstein-Friesian cows. The current 13-day slaughter withholding period does not account for rising populations of third-generation cephalosporin (3GC) resistant bacteria in feces of animals following CCFA treatment. A total of 124 matched-pairs of cows were enrolled in the study. Cows diagnosed with postpartum metritis received

Heavy metals in summer squash fruits grown in soil amended with municipal sewage sludge.

The increasing awareness of the value of vegetables and fruits in the human diet requires monitoring of heavy metals in food crops. The effects of amending soil with compost made from municipal sewage sludge (MSS) and MSS mixed with yard waste (MSS-YW) on Cd, Cr, Mo, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Ni concentrations in soil and the potential bioaccumulation of heavy metals in squash fruits at harvest were investigated. A field study was conducted in a silty-loam soil at Kentucky State University Research Farm. Eighteen plots of 22 x 3.7 m each were separated using metal borders and the soil in six plots was m
