Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a common congenital heart anomaly, often diagnosed with relative ease. However, the presence of additional structural abnormalities, such as cor triatriatum dexter (CTD) or a prominent eustachian valve, can create a triatrial appearance, complicating diagnosis and management. Accurate differentiation of these anomalies is essential to guide appropriate clinical decisions. We report the case of a 25-year-old male with exertional dyspnea and fatigue. Cardiovascular examination revealed a wide, fixed splitting of S2 and a systolic murmur. Transthoracic echocardiograp

We aimed to review computed tomography and magnetic resonance angiography of congenital anomalies of pulmonary veins. Total anomalous pulmonary venous return shows all pulmonary veins drain abnormally in another site rather than left atrium. Imaging can detect anomalous veins either supracardiac, infracardiac, or mixed. Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return shows some pulmonary vein have abnormal drainage that well delineated with computed tomography angiography. Scimitar syndrome is a type of partial anomalous pulmonary venous return where the pulmonary veins of the right lung drain infra

OBJECTIVE: To report our experience of intracardiac surgery with an inverted J-shaped partial sternotomy (IJPS) and describe the technical details of this approach.
METHODS: From January to December 2002, 31 patients underwent intracardiac operations using the IJPS instead of a standard conventional full-length median sternotomy (FLMS). Twenty-one patients had mitral valve replacements (MVR), with combined tricuspid valvuloplasty in three, six had closure of secundum atrial septal defects, three had closure of ventricular septal defects and one had repair of cor triatriatum. Data from 26 rand

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary venous obstruction (PVO) induces pulmonary arterial hypertension, as well as pulmonary venous hypertension, and jeopardizes the repair of cardiac lesions.
METHODS: Four cases of congenital mitral stenosis and 4 cases of cor triatriatum (Lucas type A), ages ranging from 2 months to 16 years, were histologically examined on pulmonary vasculature. Histometrical analysis was performed on medial thickness and intimal changes of both pulmonary arteries and veins. For comparison, the examination of pulmonary vasculature in ventricular septal defect (VSD) cases was also performe

Multiple bands and bandlike structures can be found within the cardiac chambers, which can be evaluated with various imaging modalities including echocardiography, CT, MRI, and invasive angiography. These bands can be classified as normal structures or normal variants, aberrant structures, or pathologic entities. Normal structures include the crista terminalis, taenia sagittalis, Chiari network, coumadin ridge, moderator band, papillary muscles, and chordae tendineae. Aberrant structures include aberrant papillary muscles, accessory chordae, false tendons, and accessory mitral valve tissue. Pa

OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy of echocardiography in diagnosis of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC).
METHODS: A combination of suprasternal, parasternal, subcostal and apical views were employed to diagnose TAPVC and to trace the course of the anomalous pulmonary venous connection, the direction of the inter-atrial shunt, enlargement of right atrium (RA) and right ventricle (RV), superior and inferior vena cava. All pediatric patients underwent surgical repair. The results of echocardiography were compared with surgical findings.
RESULT: A total of 28 consecutive pediat

In 12,576 consecutive Doppler-echocardiographic studies (DE) performed on 11,450 patients over 3 years (1987-1989), 183 newly diagnosed congenital heart abnormalities were detected in 161 patients. The age of the 161 patients (86 female, 75 male) ranged from 16 to 84 years (median 34.5). The highest incidences of pathologies were those of ASD II (29%) and VSD (11%). With decreasing frequency the following abnormalities were diagnosed: pulmonary valve disease (8%), interatrial septal aneurysms (7%), membranous subvalvular aortic stenosis (5%), anomalous pulmonary venous connections (4%), atriov

OBJECTIVES: Aortic arch repair has been shifted from deep hypothermia plus circulatory arrest to cerebral perfusion at tepid temperatures. A step forward is a simultaneous brain-coronary perfusion, allowing beating-heart arch surgery.
METHODS: A 'Y' cannula from the arterial line delivers oxygenated blood to brain and heart. The arch is repaired on a beating heart at 25°C. Intracardiac repair is performed after running cardioplegia through the root line. Fifty patients are classified into 3 groups: A, Norwood (8 neonates); B, aortic arch (14 children) and C, aortic arch plus intracardiac repa

Knowledge of right atrial anatomic and pathologic imaging findings and associated clinical symptoms is important to avoid false-positive diagnoses and missed findings. Complete evaluation of the heart often requires a multimodality approach that includes radiography, echocardiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and invasive angiography. In general, CT provides the highest spatial resolution of these modalities at the cost of radiation exposure to the patient. Echocardiography and MR imaging offer complementary and detailed information for functional evaluation w

OBJECTIVES: Early atresia of the common pulmonary vein (ACPV) leads to total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, while late atresia or incomplete absorption leads to common pulmonary vein atresia and cor triatriatum sinister (both of which are rare). We report seven cases of atresia of the common pulmonary vein at autopsy.
DESIGN: Retrospective case records studied.
SETTING: Tertiary care teaching hospital affiliated to medical college in Mumbai, India.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The clinical and autopsy records of neonates and infants diagnosed with ACPV over a period of 11 years were reviewed

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the proportion of children with delayed recognition of congenital heart disease (CHD).
METHODS: Of the 744 children with CHD primarily diagnosed during a 10 year period in one hospital, the patients were identified where the diagnosis of CHD was established with a significant delay.
RESULTS: Sixty six patients (8.9%) had delayed diagnosis of CHD. Among patients with cyanotic CHD, 10.4% (7 of 67 cases) were referred after they had initially been discharged home from the birth clinic. Among patients with acyanotic CHD, 8.7% (59 of 67

Three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography is a new and evolving cardiac imaging technique. We reported our experiences of its clinical applications in 59 patients. A series of special temporal longitudinal views were selected by the frame grabber. Then the computer connected each digitized endocardial surface of the longitudinal views according to their spatial position and reconstructed the three-dimensional, cardiac shaded picture with gray scale. The three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiographic images were divided into three areas. The right area was right anterior to the es

Cranial neural crest, which extends from the mid-diencephalon to somite five, plays an integral role in development of pharyngeal arch derivatives and supplies mesenchyme to the aortic arch arteries. Neural crest cells in pharyngeal arches three, four, and six migrate to the heart and are involved in aorticopulmonary and conotruncal septation. Ablation of the "cardiac" neural crest cells in chick embryos results in a variety of outflow tract anomalies, including persistent truncus arteriosus. Although other studies have shown the importance of the neural crest in the development of the cardiac

BACKGROUND: Alström syndrome (ALMS), a rare recessively inherited ciliopathy caused by mutations in ALMS1, is characterized by retinal dystrophy, childhood obesity, sensorineural hearing loss, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The majority of pathogenic variants in ALMS1 are nonsense and frameshift mutations, which would lead to premature protein truncation, whereas copy number variants are seldom reported.
METHODS: Herein, we present a 10-year-old Chinese girl with ALMS. The potential causative genetic variant was confirmed through whole genome sequencing, quantitative real-time PCR analysis, an

BACKGROUND: Catheter ablation (CA) is an effective technique for the management of atrial fibrillation (AF). Cardiac computed tomography (CCT) is a non-invasive imaging modality that is used as a crucial part of planning before CA procedures which can detect other incidental findings and require further diagnostic investigations.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess the prevalence and distribution of incidental CCT findings in patients with AF undergoing CA.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis over a three-year period (2013-2016) of 218 patients undergoing CCT prior to AF CA. CCT findings were analyz
