Reduction of phosphorus, nitrogen and microorganisms in pilot scale sand filter beds containing biotite, treating primary wastewater.

In sparsely populated areas, sand filter beds play an important role in wastewater treatment. As the need to improve the removal of nutrients increases, reactive filter materials represent one potential way to improve the reliability of current systems. We tested a pilot-scale multi-layer biotite filter for its ability to remove phosphorus, nitrogen, organic matter and enteric microorganisms with the importance of each layer in a multi-layer biotite filter being examined. In the experimental setup, the filters were fed with a raw wastewater influent mimicking the usual daily rhythm of water co

Humic acid acts as a natural antidote of graphene by regulating nanomaterial translocation and metabolic fluxes in vivo.

Graphene-related research has intensified rapidly in a wide range of disciplines, but few studies have examined ecosystem risks, particularly phytotoxicity. This study revealed that graphene significantly inhibits the number of wheat roots and the biosynthesis of chlorophyll, and altered the morphology of shoots. Humic acid (HA), a ubiquitous form of natural organic matter, significantly (P < 0.05) relieved this phytotoxicity and recovered the sharp morphology of shoot tips. Both graphene and graphene-HA were transferred from wheat roots to shoots and were found in the cytoplasms and chloropla

Purification of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplifiable DNA from compost piles containing bovine mortalities.

Livestock production systems utilize composting as a method of disposal of livestock mortalities, but there is limited information on the rate and extent of carcass decomposition. Detection of specific DNA fragments by PCR offers a method for investigating the degradation of carcasses and other biological materials during composting. However, the purity of extracted DNA is critical for successful PCR analysis. We applied a method to purify DNA from compost samples and have tested the method by analyzing bovine and plant DNA targets after 0, 4, and 12 month of composting. The concentration of o

An exploration of the relationship between adsorption and bioavailability of pesticides in soil to earthworm.

A study was conducted to determine the adsorption/desorption of butachlor, myclobutanil and chlorpyrifos on five soils using a batch equilibration technique and to study the relationship between bioavailability to Allolobophora caliginosa and the adsorption/desorption of these three pesticides. The results showed that the adsorption/desorption processes of the tested compounds were mainly controlled by soil organic matter content (OM) and octanol/water-partitioning coefficient (K(ow)), and that the bioavailability of the pesticides was dependent on characteristics of pesticides, properties of

Simultaneous adsorption of copper ions and humic acid onto an activated carbon.

In this study, simultaneous adsorption of copper ions and humic acid (HA) from Aldrich onto an activated carbon is investigated. It is found that the HA adsorption in the absence of copper decreases as the pH is increased. It leads to a reduction of 34.7% in the specific surface area of carbon. There exists a critical concentration (CC) of HA for copper adsorption. At HA concentrations < CC, a decrease in copper adsorption is observed; however, the HA improves the adsorption at HA concentrations > CC. An increase in ionic strength can enhance the copper uptake; however, zinc and/or cobalt ions

Enhancing Cr(VI) bioreduction via Na+-stimulated intracellular energy metabolism and electron transfer using methane as electron donor.

Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) coupled with Cr(VI) bioreduction process offers a cost-effective pathway to simultaneously mitigate methane emissions and remediate Cr(VI) contamination. However, its practical application is limited by insufficient intracellular energy generation and low electron transfer efficiency. This study elucidated the regulatory role and mechanism of Na+, a transmembrane electrochemical gradient driver, on the metabolic activity and electron transfer of this coupled system. Batch experiments demonstrated that NaCl addition significantly improved Cr(VI) reduction ef

Chitosan modified polyacrylonitrile fiber as adsorbent for removal of sulfosalicylic acid and Congo red.

In this study, one novel CS/PAO composite was synthesized by modifying amidoximated polyacrylonitrile (PAO) fibers with chitosan (CS). The composite exhibited excellent adsorption performance for sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) and Congo red (CR). The maximum adsorption capacities reached 63.5 mg·g-1 for SSA (pH 3.07, 293 K) and 91.2 mg·g-1 for CR (pH 6.38, 313 K) at an initial concentration of 200 mg·L-1. Kinetic analysis revealed that both pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models fitted the data well, suggesting a mixed mechanism involving both physical and chemical adsorption. Isotherm m

Coupling of sulfate isotopes with 3D-EEM: Unveiling a new approach to tracing the origin of sulfates in groundwater around landfills.

Elevated sulfate concentrations in groundwater pose risks to drinking water safety and subsurface stability; however, accurate source apportionment remains challenging in systems influenced by mixed natural and anthropogenic inputs. This study examines a landfill-impacted aquifer in the red-bed region of southwestern Sichuan, China, with particular emphasis on the coupling between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and sulfate biogeochemical processes. A multi-tracer approach integrating hydrochemical analysis, sulphur (δ³⁴S) and oxygen (δ¹⁸O) isotopes, and three-dimensional excitation-emission ma

Reed root-biofilm systems are associated with cadmium depletion in wetland soils, along with extracellular polymeric substances compositional shifts and distinct bacterial enrichment.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in wetland soils poses a severe threat to ecosystem health, yet traditional remediation strategies often lack efficient, self-sustaining mechanisms for long-term depletion. This study investigates the roles of reed root-biofilm (RRB) systems in Cd depletion and shaping microbial community structure. Through a 240-day factorial microcosm experiment involving five treatment groups (bulk soil, sterilized soil, reed root-biofilm alone, and their combinations) across a Cd concentration gradient (0-10 mg/kg), and integrating ICP-OES analysis, extracellular polymeric substa

Microbial corrosion of metals: The corrosion microbiome.

Microbially catalyzed corrosion of metals is a substantial economic concern. Aerobic microbes primarily enhance Fe0 oxidation through indirect mechanisms and their impact appears to be limited compared to anaerobic microbes. Several anaerobic mechanisms are known to accelerate Fe0 oxidation. Microbes can consume H2 abiotically generated from the oxidation of Fe0. Microbial H2 removal makes continued Fe0 oxidation more thermodynamically favorable. Extracellular hydrogenases further accelerate Fe0 oxidation. Organic electron shuttles such as flavins, phenazines, and possibly humic substances may

Methodological problems in determining TCAA in soils-the discovery of novel natural trichloroacetyl containing compounds and their interference with a common method for determining TCAA in soil and vegetation.

Trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) is a pollutant with several sources and is also formed naturally in soil. We show that almost all investigated environmental compartments (soil, soil water, groundwater, spruce needles and throughfall, but not rain) contain compounds, which make false positives in the thermal decarboxylation method often used for determination of TCAA in environmental samples. The compounds are dominating quantitatively over TCAA in soil, soil water and groundwater, while TCAA is dominating in needle and throughfall samples. The compounds behave differently from TCAA with regard to

Humic acid's sheltering effect paradoxically promotes antibiotic resistance gene dissemination during peroxymonosulfate water treatment.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) utilizing peroxymonosulfate (PMS) are increasingly deployed for water disinfection, yet their impact on the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) remains poorly understood. Here, we conducted field surveys in three aquaculture ponds in eastern China and employed a Transwell-based horizontal gene transfer (HRT) sorting assay, metagenomics, and transcriptomics to investigate the underlying mechanisms. We found that PMS-treated waters harbored significantly higher intracellular ARG burdens compared to untreated or chlorinated systems. Mechanistica

Reducing the negative impact of ceftriaxone and doxycycline in aqueous solutions using ferrihydrite/plant-based composites: mechanism pathway.

The adsorption of ceftriaxone (CET) and doxycycline (DOX) from aqueous solution using ferrihydrite/plant-based composites (silica rice husk) to reduce their negative impact on the ecosystem was adequately studied. On the other hand, phosphate and humic acid are often found in water and soil; in view of this, their effects on the adsorption of CET and DOX were investigated. The results showed that the removal of ceftriaxone decreased with an increase in pH, while that of doxycycline did not. Ferrihydrite with 10% silica rice husk (Fh-10%SRH) has the highest maximum adsorption capacity of 139 an

A modified coagulation-ultrafiltration process for silver nanoparticles removal and membrane fouling mitigation: The role of laminarin.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in surface water are highly toxic to humans and difficult to remove due to their adsorption to humic acid (HA). In this study, laminarin (LA) was used as a coagulant aid in a coagulation-ultrafiltration (C-UF) system to improve AgNPs-HA removal efficiency. C-UF efficiency, membrane flux, and flocs properties were investigated to explore the AgNPs-HA removal mechanism and membrane fouling. Results showed that when poly aluminum chloride (PAC) was dosed with LA, AgNPs-HA removal was 10-15% higher than when using PAC alone. The C-UF system using only PAC improved the

Implications of bromate depression from H2O2 addition during ozonation of different bromide-bearing source waters.

Minimizing bromate formation by adding H2O2 is one major option for bromide-containing source water when applying ozone in drinking water. However, difference in background water quality can have a significant influence on bromate depression. In this study, three bromide-bearing source waters (YZ, HR and HP) were selected to investigate bromate depression during the H2O2-ozonation process. The results showed that there was strong correlation between bromate formation and molecular ozone consumption during ozonation process for the three waters. Compared to YZ and HR, ozone was consumed quickly

Development and application of a biotic ligand model for predicting the chronic toxicity of dissolved and precipitated aluminum to aquatic organisms.

Aluminum (Al) toxicity to aquatic organisms is strongly affected by water chemistry. Toxicity-modifying factors such as pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), hardness, and temperature have a large impact on the bioavailability and toxicity of Al to aquatic organisms. The importance of water chemistry on the bioavailability and toxicity of Al suggests that interactions between Al and chemical constituents in exposures to aquatic organisms can affect the form and reactivity of Al, thereby altering the extent to which it interacts with biological membranes. These types of interactions have previous

Balkan endemic nephropathy and aristolochic acid I: an investigation into the role of soil and soil organic matter contamination, as a potential natural exposure pathway.

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are carcinogenic and nephrotoxic plant alkaloids present in Aristolochia species, used in traditional medicine. Recent biomolecular and environmental studies have incriminated these toxins as an etiological agent in Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), a severe kidney disease occurring in the Balkan Peninsula. The questions on how the susceptible populations are exposed to these toxins have not yet been clearly answered. Exposure to AAs through the food chain, and environmental pollution (soil/dust), could provide an explanation for the presence of BEN in the countries wh

Simultaneous removal of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn from stormwater using high-efficiency industrial sorbents: Effect of pH, contact time and humic acid.

The effect of contact time, solution pH, and the presence of humic acid (HA) on the combined removal of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn is investigated in batch tests using alumina, granulated activated carbon (GAC), and bauxsol coated sand (BCS) as sorbents. It is found that the equilibrium time for Cd, Cu, Ni and Zn is about 4h, while no clear equilibrium is observed for As and Cr. It is also found that increasing the pH until pH~8 enhanced Cd, Cu, Ni and Zn removal, but increasing the pH above this point had no major effect. In the cases of As and Cr, higher pH values (i.e. >7) decreased their re

Colloidal activated carbon for in-situ groundwater remediation--Transport characteristics and adsorption of organic compounds in water-saturated sediment columns.

Colloidal activated carbon can be considered as a versatile adsorbent and carrier material for in-situ groundwater remediation. In analogy to other nanoremediation approaches, activated carbon colloids (ACC) can be injected into the subsurface as aqueous suspensions. Deposition of ACC on the sediment creates a sorption barrier against further spreading of hydrophobic pollutants. This study deals with the optimization of ACC and their suspensions with a focus on suspension stability, ACC mobility in saturated porous media and sorption efficiency towards organic contaminants. ACC with an appropr

Activated carbons impregnated with iron oxide nanoparticles for enhanced removal of bisphenol A and natural organic matter.

The removal of bisphenol A (BPA) is important for the provision of safe drinking water, but its removal in the presence of natural organic matter (NOM) is challenging. Thus, the present study involved the fabrication and characterization of powdered activated carbons impregnated with iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPACs) with respect to the simultaneous removal of BPA and NOM. The number of Fe ions loaded into the PAC pores was optimized in terms of exposure time. Impregnation with iron oxide reduced the surface area and pore volume, but the pore size was maintained. IONPAC adsorbents had conside
