22q11.2 Deletion syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea.

UNLABELLED: Otolaryngologic problems are common in the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (DS) population. Structural anomalies and retrognathia may predispose these patients to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The current association of OSA in this population is not defined. OBJECTIVE: (1) Define the frequency of OSA in 22q11.2 DS patients referred for polysomnography (PSG). (2) Determine if OSA is present before and/or after surgery to correct velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). (3) Determine effect of prior adenotonsillectomy on OSA following VPI surgery. METHODS: Retrospective review of children tr

Mandibular growth comparisons of Class I and Class II division 1 skeletofacial patterns.

OBJECTIVE: To determine class and sex differences in mandibular growth and modeling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mixed-longitudinal sample of 130 untreated French-Canadian adolescents, 77 (45 boys and 32 girls) with Class I (normal or abnormal) occlusion and 53 (26 boys and 27 girls) with Class II division 1 malocclusion, was used. Based on eight landmarks, eight traditional measurements were used to compare the anteroposterior position of the maxilla and mandible, relationship between the jaws, and mandibular size. Mandibular superimpositions were used to compare the horizontal and vertical cha

The effects of forehead and neck position on esthetics of class I, II and III profiles.

INTRODUCTION: All parts of the face, other than jaw relationships, should be considered in orthodontic treatment planning. The role of forehead and neck in facial esthetics is well known; however, the majority of conventional facial analysis methods have not considered them. Neck and forehead may confer mutual effects on equilibrium and on esthetics of other facial components, and may change the overall convexity/concavity view of the profile. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of anteroposterior position of the forehead and neck on the esthetics of skeletal class I, II

Stability after maxillary segmentation for correction of anterior open bite: a cohort study of 33 cases.

The aim of this cohort study was to evaluate the stability after multi-segmentation of the maxilla for correction of anterior open bite deformities. A total of 33 patients who underwent segmented maxillary osteotomy between 1994 and 2006 were included in the study. Rigid fixation with plates and postsurgical intermaxillary fixation for 6 weeks was applied to each patient. All patients were then followed in a standardized examination procedure at months 6, 12, 18 and up to 30 months postoperatively. Vertical and horizontal relation of the incisors was measured both clinically and on cast models

The neurosensory deficit of inferior alveolar nerve following bilateral sagittal split osteotomy: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Investigation in Saudi Arabia or the Arab Gulf States to assess the unfavorable impacts of the bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) is non-existent, so questions have been raised about the success rate of this operation and the frequency of unwilling outcome. To address these worries, we directed a case series study to evaluate the hypoesthesia, a type of neurosensory deficit (NSD) of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) after BSSO, and if the hypoesthesia outcome will improve if the surgeries performed by a single surgeon. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a prospective case serie

Mandibular distraction in neonates: a strategy to avoid tracheostomy.

Over the past 5 years, the authors developed an application of mandibular distraction osteogenesis to eliminate existing tracheostomy. That experience led the authors to attempt mandibular distraction osteogenesis in neonates as an alternative before tracheostomy. Success with this approach using supporting objective airway measurements has been reported previously. This report includes six neonates diagnosed with Pierre Robin sequence. Of the six, five neonates ranging in age from 6 to 26 days (mean, 14.5 days) were treated by the authors with mandibular distraction over a 22-month period. Th

Anterior open bite--simplified non surgical technique to correct in adults.

Skeletal Anterior open bite abnormality in adults is probably the most difficult to correct in orthodontics just behind Skeletal Class III abnormality. Literature research shows various techniques to correct this problem, often via orthognathic surgery, but it was difficult to find in the literatures a simplified non-surgical technique. This author propose, a simplified, non-surgical technique to correct skeletal anterior open bite in adults using non-ligating, frictionless brackets and vertical elastics. Some indications and contra-indications will be discussed

Orthognathic surgery for obstructive sleep apnea: applying the principles to new horizons in craniofacial surgery.

This article is dedicated to the senior author Dr. Henry K. Kawamoto, Jr, who pioneered the use of orthognathic surgery to treat severe obstructive sleep apnea in 1981. Since that time, his techniques for maxillomandibular advancement have been revised and expanded for improved surgical success. Obstructive sleep apnea is a growing public health concern because it can cause hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, heart attack, stroke, and, in rare circumstances, sudden death if untreated. When less invasive options fail such as weight loss or dental devices for mandibular repositioning, maxillomand

Impact of genioplasty on mandibular growth during puberty.

AIM: Genioplasty has been validated for the correction of mandibular vertical excess and is generally performed at the end of the growth period, either alone or in association with other forms of osteotomy. Our aim was to assess whether genioplasty performed at an earlier age can impact mandibular growth. METHODS: This comparative prospective study included 25 high-angle, mouth-breathing adolescents following orthodontic and ENT treatment. Subjects were divided into two groups according to their stage of puberty, either early (group 1: Tanner's stage 3, n=12) or late stage (group 2: Tanner st

Face, palate, and craniofacial morphology in patients with a solitary median maxillary central incisor.

The occurrence of a solitary median maxillary central incisor (SMMCI) is a very rare condition and might be a sign of a mild degree of holoprosencephaly. In this investigation, material from 10 patients, nine girls and one boy with a SMMCI (8-17 years of age) registered in orthodontic clinics was examined. The purpose was to evaluate the clinical characteristics and craniofacial morphology in this group of patients. Oral photographs, study casts, profile radiographs, and orthopantomograms were analysed. The study showed that this group of SMMCI patients were characterized by an indistinct phil
