Enhanced antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of Hwangryeonhaedok-tang fermented with Kimchi-derived Lactiplantibacillus plantarum WiKim0111 for potential acne treatment.

Recent years have seen an increase in the incidence of acne in adults and teenagers resulting in active research in acne treatment. In the present study, we aimed to improve the anti-acne effects of Hwangryeonhaedok-tang (HHT) through fermentation using a kimchi-derived lactic acid bacterium. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum WiKim0111 (Lpb. plantarum WiKim0111) was selected to ferment HHT due to its strong antioxidant activity and its ability to effectively survive and grow in the HHT medium. The antimicrobial activity of HHT and fermented HHT (FHHT) against Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) was det

Skin manifestations and biophysical changes following weight reduction induced by bariatric surgery: A 2-year prospective study.

Skin manifestations and biophysical changes are observed in patients with morbid obesity. However, reports of changes after significant weight loss, particularly through post-bariatric surgery (BaS), are limited. The aim of this 2-year prospective study was to evaluate the prevalence of skin signs and their changes in patients with morbid obesity who underwent BaS. Thirty-one patients were recruited for the study, with a mean age of 38.35 (SD 10.61) years and a male preponderance (male = 19 [61.29%], female = 12 [38.71%]). Patients were scheduled for multiple visits at months 0, 3, 6, 12, 18,

Antimicrobial Formulation of Chrysopogon zizanioides Essential Oil in an Emulsified Lotion for Acne.

Acne is a skin condition arising from excess sebum production and microbial overgrowth within the pilosebaceous unit. Several commercial essential oils have shown promising activity against acne-related pathogens. Due to their volatility and thermal instability, the formulation of essential oils into commercial products remains a pharmaceutical challenge. Thus, this study aimed to develop a viable anti-acne topical treatment as an oil-in-water emulsified lotion to overcome these challenges. Chrysopogon zizanioides (vetiver) displayed noteworthy antimicrobial activity with a mean minimum inhibi

New Concepts, Concerns, and Creations in Acne.

Laboratory monitoring for patients on isotretinoin should include creatinine kinase in athletic males and the more liver-specific gamma glutamyltransferase. There is mounting evidence that acne pathophysiology includes a barrier defect and subsequent microbiome disruption. Avoidance of acne scars with early and aggressive treatment is a more efficient and cost-effective option than subsequent treatment. Laser and light treatments for acne and acne scars are plentiful but poorly supported by evidence-based medicine. The acne pipeline is rich with new chemical entities, new formulations, and com

Increased Lipid Accumulation under Hypoxia in SZ95 Human Sebocytes.

BACKGROUND: Excessive sebum is produced by specialized cells called sebocytes and is considered a cause or consequence of acne, sebaceous cysts, hyperplasia, and sebaceous adenoma. OBJECTIVE: To report changes in lipid accumulation in human sebocytes under hypoxia, which occurs under conditions of seborrhea. METHODS: Sebocytes from the immortalized human gland cell line SZ95 were cultured under conditions of hypoxia for 48 h; lipid formation was confirmed by Nile red and Oil Red O staining. To investigate whether HIF-1α plays a role in lipid accumulation, SZ95 cells transfected or treated wi

Melanoma associated with a dysplastic nevus: report of two cases with unusual sebocyte-like melanocytes in the nevus part of the lesion.

We present two cases of melanoma arising in a dysplastic nevus that contained intradermal sebocyte-like melanocytes characterized by a scalloped dark-staining nucleus surrounded by the pale multivacuolated cytoplasm imitating sebaceous differentiation. Both patients were women, aged 49 and 55 years. Location included the back and temporal area. Microscopically, both cases had the following features in common: the melanoma in situ, which was of the superficially spreading type, was associated with a dysplastic compound nevus, in which the sebocyte-like cells were identified in the intradermal n

Lactobacillus-derived extracellular vesicles provide multi-target acne treatment by enriched proteins and skin microbiota protection.

Numerous studies have highlighted the therapeutic potential of probiotics in acne. Given the complex and multifactorial nature of the disease, probiotic-based multi-target therapies may be promising. Additionally, due to their non-replicative and nanosized characteristics, probiotic-derived extracellular vesicles might provide a safer and more efficient alternative. Here, we selected three anti-acne targets-Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) inhibition, anti-inflammatory effects, and sebum suppression-for high-throughput screening, identifying Lactobacillus plantarum 5b4m2 with multi-target an

INDIVIDUAL ARTICLE: A Clinical Evaluation of Scalp Barrier Function, Ceramide Levels, and Microbiome in Diverse Dandruff Patients.

Dandruff is a common chronic scalp condition that affects approximately half the population irrespective of their origin. Dandruff scalps are characterized by flaking skin, pruritus, and minimal visible scalp inflammation. At the biological level, dandruff scalp presents a disruption of the barrier function supported by lower levels of ceramides in the stratum corneum and typically accompanied by altered microbiome diversity, including a higher abundance of Malassezia yeasts and exacerbated sebum peroxidation. This study evaluated the relationship between skin barrier integrity in association

Prospective Pilot Evaluation of the Safety, Tolerability, and Efficacy of Clindamycin Phosphate 1.2%/Adapalene 0.15%/Benzoyl Peroxide 3.1% Gel plus Clascoterone 1% Cream in Adult Patients with Acne.

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris (acne) is a common disorder with a complex, multi-faceted pathophysiology. To date, there has not been a single topical treatment that targets all aspects of acne pathophysiology (ie, increased sebum production, presence of Cutibacterium acnes, inflammation, and follicular hyperkeratinization). As such, topical treatments need to be utilized in combination to target all four of the major recognized pathophysiologic components in acne lesion formation. OBJECTIVE: This single-center prospective evaluation assessed the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of clindamycin p

The Use of Acneceuticals to Improve Acne Care: Introduction of a New Term and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Acne is a multifactorial inflammatory skin condition that commonly presents to the dermatology clinic. Treatment generally involves the use of pharmaceutical agents and procedural techniques. Recently, the importance of over-the-counter skin care in acne has been recognized in many studies. This paper introduces the term acneceuticals to encompass a wide range of FDA- monographed, yet non-prescription ingredients proven to alter the structure and function of acneic skin. METHODS: A panel of 8 dermatologists with an interest in acne and skin care performed a literature review of ac

In vitro efficacy of disinfectants against Cutibacterium acnes.

Introduction. The abnormal proliferation of Cutibacterium acnes, a human skin commensal bacterium, aggravates acne. Prompt and aggressive treatment of acne in its initial stages is essential because of the increased psychological distress experienced by patients. Over-the-counter medications containing disinfectants are sometimes used to treat acne because they are widely available, exhibit broad-spectrum activity and have a likelihood of causing resistance.Gap statement. Limited information is available regarding the bactericidal effects of disinfectants against C. acnes.Aim. In the present s

The Role of the Skin Microbiome in Acne: Challenges and Future Therapeutic Opportunities.

Acne vulgaris is a widespread dermatological condition that significantly affects the quality of life of adolescents and adults. Traditionally, acne pathogenesis has been linked to factors such as excess sebum production, follicular hyperkeratinization, and the presence of Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes). However, recent studies have highlighted the role of the skin microbiome, shifting focus from individual pathogens to microbial community dynamics. This review critically evaluates existing research on the skin microbiome and its relationship to acne, focusing on microbial diversity, C. acnes

Ocular Manifestations in Seborrheic Dermatitis Epidemiology, Clinical Features, and Management: A Comprehensive Review.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) often leads to ocular manifestations (OM) that are frequently overlooked. This study comprehensively explains the genesis of these ocular issues, which involves a combination of Malassezia overgrowth, changes in sebum production, and inflammatory responses in the body. The periocular region is rich in sebaceous glands, allowing Malassezia to thrive, which can lead to an inflammatory reaction that spreads to the eye surface, causing disorders such as blepharitis, conjunctivitis, keratitis, and ocular surface diseases. Although epidemiological data are limited, it is w
