Histologic Features of External Cervical Resorption Affecting Impacted Maxillary Canines: A Report of 2 Cases.

Reports on the histopathologic features of external cervical resorption (ECR) in unerupted teeth are scarce. This article reports on 2 maxillary impacted canines from different patients that showed ECR lesions and were surgically removed and histologically evaluated. Case 1 showed symptoms associated with oral communication of the dental follicle and pulpal exposure. Radiographs and cone-beam computed tomographic imaging showed that resorption affected a large part of the root and the crown. Case 2 was asymptomatic, and the resorption cavity was restricted to the tooth crown. Both teeth were e

Accelerated enamel mineralization in Dspp mutant mice.

Dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) is one of the major non-collagenous proteins present in dentin, cementum and alveolar bone; it is also transiently expressed by ameloblasts. In humans many mutations have been found in DSPP and are associated with two autosomal-dominant genetic diseases - dentinogenesis imperfecta II (DGI-II) and dentin dysplasia (DD). Both disorders result in the development of hypomineralized and mechanically compromised teeth. The erupted mature molars of Dspp(-/-) mice have a severe hypomineralized dentin phenotype. Since dentin and enamel formations are interdependent, we

Pathognomonic oral profile of Enamel Renal Syndrome (ERS) caused by recessive FAM20A mutations.

Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a genetically and clinically heterogeneous group of inherited dental enamel defects. Commonly described as an isolated trait, it may be observed concomitantly with other orodental and/or systemic features such as nephrocalcinosis in Enamel Renal Syndrome (ERS, MIM#204690), or gingival hyperplasia in Amelogenesis Imperfecta and Gingival Fibromatosis Syndrome (AIGFS, MIM#614253). Patients affected by ERS/AIGFS present a distinctive orodental phenotype consisting of generalized hypoplastic AI affecting both the primary and permanent dentition, delayed tooth eruptio

Extraction of primary canine tooth buds: prevalence and associated dental abnormalities in a group of Ethiopian Jewish children.

Recent publications have described a common belief, held in rural areas in Africa, that unerupted primary canines cause diarrhoea, vomiting and fever in infants. To relieve these symptoms a traditional native healer extracts these tooth buds. The emigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel in 1991 allowed an investigation of this practice among this community. A group of 59 children (27 boys and 32 girls) aged 3-12 years were examined clinically and radiographically. Evidence was found of extraction of 63 primary canine buds in 35 (59%) of the children. Extraction of one canine was found in 16 chil

Dental characteristics of a large military population useful for identification.

The number and complexity of dental restorations has decreased for younger Americans. Since the presence and extent of restorations are important data for forensic science identification purposes, the Computer-Assisted Postmortem Identification (CAPMI) system was used to assess the practical effect of the decreased selectivity expected as a result of improved dental health. Dental examination data from 7030 soldiers were recorded on optical mark read forms and entered into a database. The data were reorganized and analyzed to generate summary statistics about the incidence of each type of rest

Establishing the diagnostic criteria for eruption disorders based on genetic and clinical data.

INTRODUCTION: Proper diagnosis and management of eruption disturbances remains challenging but is critical to a functional occlusion. The objective of this study was to establish definitive criteria to differentiate and diagnose eruption disorders, specifically primary failure of eruption (PFE) and ankylosis. METHODS: Sixty-four affected persons were placed into 3 cohorts: PFE diagnosed through confirmed PTH1R mutation (n = 11), PFE diagnosed based on clinical criteria (n = 47), and ankylosis diagnosed based on clinical criteria (n = 6). These groups were assessed to identify clinical feature

Oral manifestations in patients and dogs with mucopolysaccharidosis Type VII.

Mucopolysaccharidosis Type VII (MPS7, also called β-glucuronidase deficiency or Sly syndrome; MIM 253220) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disease, caused by mutations in the GUSB gene. β-glucuronidase (GUSB) is a lysosomal hydrolase involved in the stepwise degradation of glucuronic acid-containing glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Patients affected with MPS VII are not able to completely degrade glucuronic acid-containing GAGs, including chondroitin 4-sulfate, chondroitin 6-sulfate, dermatan sulfate, and heparan sulfate. The accumulation of these GAGs in lysosomes of vario

Exposure of unerupted palatal canines: a survey of current practice in the United Kingdom, and experience of a gingival-sparing procedure.

Patients with impacted ectopic canines often present to Orthodontic and Oral and Maxillofacial units, with 85% being displaced palatally. Current orthodontic opinion suggests that the creation of adequate space ultimately allows the spontaneous eruption of most impacted canines, but we are often requested to operate to facilitate their eruption. There are several approaches, techniques that vary depending on whether orthodontically assisted or spontaneous eruption is expected. There are few publications that describe either the techniques or their merits. We have used a gingival-sparing techni

[Orthodontic and oral surgery therapy in cleidocranial dysplasia].

A cleidocranial dysplasia is an autosomal dominant inherited condition consisting of generalized skeletal disorder. Associated dental signs are present in 93,5%; failure of tooth eruption with multiple supernumerary teeth, dilaceration of roots, crown germination, microdontia, high arched palate, midface hypoplasia, high gonion angle. The molecular- genetic analysis revealed a missense mutation in the CBFA1 gene located on chromosome 6p21, which is considered to be etiological factor for CCD. Orthodontic and oral surgery therapy of a 13 year-old child with CCD was performed due to aesthetic an

Dental and facial bone abnormalities in pyknodysostosis: CT findings.

Pyknodysostosis is an autosomal-recessive disorder of osteoclast dysfunction causing osteosclerosis, with associated maxillofacial anomalies. Multidetector CT with multiplanar and 3D reconstruction illustrated the pathologic findings in this case. Abnormalities included multiple retained deciduous teeth, unerupted teeth with associated follicles, an irregularly expanded alveolus and body of the mandible, and an obtuse mandibular angle. Volume-rendered imaging better delineated the irregular dentition, with crowding and retention of deciduous teeth.

Treatment of a patient with unerupted mandibular molars, lateral open bite, and class II subdivision malocclusion.

This case report describes the treatment of a patient with three unerupted mandibular right molars and a lateral open bite in a Class II subdivision malocclusion with mandibular arch asymmetry. Sequential uprighting and traction of the three mandibular unerupted teeth with a compressed open-coil spring, reverse sliding jig, and light force system was used in the treatment and are described in detail. The results remained stable during the 8-year 6-month posttreatment and 4-year postretention periods.

Eruption and function of maxillary third molars after extraction of second molars.

After extraction of maxillary second molars, will the third molars erupt into a functional position in a timely manner? To answer this question, 56 consecutively treated cases of maxillary second molar extraction were reviewed. The unerupted positions of the maxillary third molars were measured on cephalometric radiographs, ages of eruption were evaluated, positions of erupted third molars analyzed, and interproximal periodontal health of adjacent first molars compared. The results showed that, generally, the eruption of third molars was accelerated. Most of the third molars had acceptable int

Accuracy of the Third Molar Eruption Predictor in predicting eruption.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the possibility of applying the Third Molar Eruption Predictor to all panoramic radiographs. STUDY DESIGN: Panoramic radiographs were retrospectively analyzed from a 4-year follow-up study of third molars carried out at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The radiographs, taken at a mean age of 20.6 years, included 45 unerupted or partially erupted mandibular third molars in 28 subjects. Because the device was calibrated both with simple proportions and by use of the methods of Bayes' Decision Theory, the separation point of the device was therefore adjusted at 12 mm

Influence of first premolar extraction on mandibular third molar angulation.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the angular changes in the developing mandibular third molars in both first premolar extraction and nonextraction cases and to determine whether premolar extraction results in a more mesial movement of the mandibular buccal segment and causes favorable rotational changes in the mandibular third molar tilt, which can enhance later eruption of the third molars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pretreatment (T1) and posttreatment (T2) panoramic radiographs were taken of 25 subjects who had been treated by the extraction of all the first premolars and 25 subjects who had been treated

Interim prosthetic phase of multidisciplinary management of cleidocranial dysplasia: "the Bronx Approach".

This case report presents treatment of two patients with the usual characteristics of Cleidocranial Dysostosis. A multidisciplinary approach using the disciplines of prosthodontics, orthodontics, and oral surgery was effected. Exfoliation of the patient's deciduous teeth and failure of permanent anterior tooth eruption led to emotional, social, and self-esteem issues in both patients. Due to the psychosocial issues confronting these two patients, esthetics was addressed prior to active intervention with orthodontics and after some surgical intervention. The use of two interim overdenture prost
