A case of angiomyofibroblastoma in a 48-year-old woman is reported. The tumor occurred as a left vulval mass and was treated by simple excision. It was located in the subcutaneous tissue of the left vulva and was well circumscribed, measuring 2.8 x 2.7 x 2.5 cm. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of hypocellular and cellular areas with well-developed small vessels. Spindle or polygonal cells were arranged with perivascular accentuation in an edematous or fibrocollagenous background. Some spindle-shaped or polygonal stromal cells were also arranged in epithelioid nests. In some areas, mito

The spectrum of pathological conditions affecting the nasopharynx includes infections, congenital anomalies, and tumoral lesions, particularly angiofibroma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and lymphoma. Hypertrophy of adenoid tissue is a frequent phenomenon in children, but it is less common in the adult population. With this case report, we wanted to point out the importance of rhinological and otological manifestations of adenoid hypertrophy in adult patients. A 48-year-old man presented with impaired hearing in both ears, difficulty breathing through the nose, impaired sense of smell, hyponasal s

A wide range of masses develop in the nose, nasal cavity, and nasopharynx in children. These lesions may arise from the nasal ala or other structures of the nose, including the mucosa covering any surface of the nasal cavity, the cartilaginous or osseous portion of the nasal septum, the nasal turbinates, and the nasal bones. Lesions may also arise from the nasopharynx or adjacent structures and involve the nose by way of direct extension. The causes of nasal masses in children include congenital and developmental disorders such as congenital nasolacrimal duct mucocele, dermoid cyst, cephalocel

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal-cardiac reflex (TCR) from the stimulation of sensory branches of trigeminal nerve can lead to hemodynamic instability. This phenomenon has been described during ophthalmologic, craniofacial, and skull base surgeries. TCR has been reported rarely with endovascular onyx embolization of dural arteriovenous fistulas.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of TCR during endovascular Onyx embolization of an arteriovenous malformation (AVM). A 16-year-old boy presented with a large cerebellar AVM with arterial feeders from the external carotid artery and posterior cerebral artery

β-catenin (CTNNB1) is a key regulatory molecule of the Wnt signaling pathway, which is important for tissue homeostasis and regulation of cell proliferation, differentiation, and function. Abnormal stabilization and nuclear accumulation of β-catenin as a consequence of missense mutations or alternative molecular mechanisms occurs at a high frequency in a variety of epithelial cancers. In mesenchymal neoplasia, the role of β-catenin has been traditionally considered limited to desmoid-type fibromatosis. However, the spectrum of β-catenin-driven (β-catenin-altered) neoplasia of mesenchymal origi

An observational study was conducted to demonstrate the role of Computed Tomographic (CT) scan to detect clinically suspected adult orbital mass in 47 patients which could not be differentiated clinically. The CT findings were compared and correlated with the findings of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) or histopathology. CT diagnosis of optic nerve sheath meningioma were 12 cases, among them only nine cases confirmed cytopathologically as meningioma and rest three as lymphoma. Among ten cases of hemangioma, eight cases were confirmed cytopathologically as cavernous hemangioma and rest t

OBJECTIVE: Schwannomas are benign tumours arising from Schwann cells of the peripheral nerve sheath. They are relatively frequent in the head and neck region (25-45%) but rarely involve in the sinonasal tract (4%). The authors outline the diagnostic difficulties and the problems in choosing the best surgical approach in two atypical cases of sinonasal Schwannomas.
METHODS: In the first case reported clinical data, sex and age of the patient, nasal endoscopy and angio-MRI led us to suspect an angiofibroma; therefore, we approached the case without a biopsy performing a preoperative selective e

Background Hypervascular head and neck tumors, such as paragangliomas, esthesioneuroblastomas, and juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas (JNA), are surgically challenging due to their rich vascular supply and proximity to critical structures. Preoperative superselective embolization may optimize surgical outcomes by reducing intraoperative bleeding and facilitating safe resections. Methods We conducted a retrospective case-control study of patients with hypervascular tumors of the central nervous system, neck, and nasal cavity treated between 2019 and 2024 at a single tertiary neurosurgical ce

BACKGROUND: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by the occurrence of combined tumors in different glands, usually the parathyroid, pancreas and pituitary, as well as in other parts of the digestive tract. The present study describes the phenotype of a Brazilian family with MEN1 caused by a previously unreported MEN1 gene mutation.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 41-year-old male, the proband, who presented with angiofibromas, primary hyperparathyroidism, macroprolactinoma, and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor. Next generation sequ

INTRODUCTION: Pyogenic granulomas are benign, painless vascular tumors on the skin and mucosal surfaces. They are commonly found in the head and neck region, although their occurrence in the larynx is rare. The term "lobular capillary hemangioma" is now used to describe the histological appearance of these tumors more accurately. Predisposing factors for pyogenic granuloma of the larynx have been linked to prior traumatic injuries, such as intubation, previous surgeries, or laryngopharyngeal reflux.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old male visited our clinic with complaints of progressive dyspho

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a neurogenetic disorder due to loss-of-function TSC1 or TSC2 variants, characterized by tumors affecting multiple organs, including skin, brain, heart, lung, and kidney. Mosaicism for TSC1 or TSC2 variants occurs in 10%-15% of individuals diagnosed with TSC. Here, we report comprehensive characterization of TSC mosaicism by using massively parallel sequencing (MPS) of 330 TSC samples from a variety of tissues and fluids from a cohort of 95 individuals with mosaic TSC. TSC1 variants in individuals with mosaic TSC are much less common (9%) than in germline TSC

Most radiotherapy (RT) involves the use of high doses (>50 Gy) to treat malignant disease. However, low to intermediate doses (approximately 3-50 Gy) can provide effective control of a number of benign conditions, ranging from inflammatory/proliferative disorders (e.g. Dupuytren's disease, heterotopic ossification, keloid scarring, pigmented villonodular synovitis) to benign tumours (e.g. glomus tumours or juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas). Current use in UK RT departments is very variable. This review identifies those benign diseases for which RT provides good control of symptoms with, f

Sinonasal and anterior skull base (ASB) schwannomas are rare entities. The majority of these lesions are found within the sinonasal tract, although some have intracranial extension via invasion of the ASB. Often, these tumors can be confused for other entities, especially olfactory groove meningiomas and esthesioneuroblastomas in the olfactory groove region, and juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas in the infratemporal fossa. We present a single institutional series of four patients with sinonasal and ASB schwannomas that were resected purely via an endoscopic endonasal approach. A retrospect

INTRODUCTION: Tuberous sclerosis (TS) is a pathology with an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance that is due to a disorder affecting cell differentiation and proliferation that produces hamartomas in different organs. Its variable forms affect the central nervous system, the kidneys, the skin and other organs. No studies have been conducted on its prevalence and behaviour in the paediatric population of Costa Rica.
AIMS: To characterise the paediatric population with TS in Costa Rica and to describe the behaviour of its epilepsy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study analyses prevalence base

Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndromes include types 1 (MEN 1) and 2 (MEN 2), von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, neurofibromatosis type 1 and Carney complex. These are complex genetic syndromes caused by activation or inactivation of different types of genes known to be involved in the regulation of cell proliferation. In this review we will discuss the clinical manifestations and management of the MEN 1 syndrome as well as the genetic screening of potential MEN 1 gene carriers. MEN 1 is a hereditary syndrome, transmitted in an autosomic dominant fashion and caused by an inactivating mutation o
