Whole-genome sequencing-based characterization of resistome and virulome in Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from ready-to-eat foods.

Klebsiella (K.) pneumoniae is a major antimicrobial-resistant pathogen of global concern. It has increasingly been reported outside clinical settings, including food products. However, genomic data on food-derived K. pneumoniae in Egypt remain limited. In this study, we investigated the genomic diversity, antimicrobial susceptibility, and phylogenetic relationships of K. pneumoniae isolated from ready-for-consumption foods obtained from Egyptian supermarkets. Eleven isolates were recovered from dairy products (milk and yogurt) and catfish. Isolates were identified by MALDI-TOF MS and confirmed

Hindering the biofilm of microbial pathogens and cancer cell lines development using silver nanoparticles synthesized by epidermal mucus proteins from Clarias gariepinus.

Scientists know very little about the mechanisms underlying fish skin mucus, despite the fact that it is a component of the immune system. Fish skin mucus is an important component of defence against invasive infections. Recently, Fish skin and its mucus are gaining interest among immunologists. Characterization was done on the obtained silver nanoparticles Ag combined with Clarias gariepinus catfish epidermal mucus proteins (EMP-Ag-NPs) through UV-vis, FTIR, XRD, TEM, and SEM. Ag-NPs ranged in size from 4 to 20 nm, spherical in form and the angles were 38.10°, 44.20°, 64.40°, and 77.20°, Wher

Profiling and source tracking of the microbial populations and resistome present in fish products.

Microorganisms in processing environments significantly impact the quality and safety of food products and can serve as potential reservoirs for antibiotic-resistant genes, contributing to public health concerns about antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Fish processing plants represent an understudied environment for microbiome mapping. This study investigated the microbial composition, prevalence of Listeria spp., and resistome structures in three catfish processing facilities in the southeastern United States. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that the observed richness and Shannon diversity

Selenium Ameliorated Oxidized Fish Oil-Induced Lipotoxicity via the Inhibition of Mitochondrial Oxidative Stress, Remodeling of Usp4-Mediated Deubiquitination, and Stabilization of Pparα.

Aims: Studies demonstrated that oxidized fish oil (OFO) promoted oxidative stress and induced mitochondrial dysfunction and lipotoxicity, which attenuated beneficial effects of fish oil supplements in the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The current study was performed on yellow catfish, a good model to study NAFLD, and its hepatocytes to explore whether selenium (Se) could alleviate OFO-induced lipotoxicity via the inhibition of oxidative stress and determine its potential mechanism. Results: The analysis of triglycerides content, oxidative stress parameters, and histolo

[Human Pseudoterranova and Anisakis cases in Iceland 2004-2020].

During 2004-2020 in total 18 anisakid larvae (Nematoda) were sent in to the Laboratory of Parasitology at Keldur for investigation and species identification. Fourteen had temporarily lived within the human body and were alive when detected, three were noticed alive in food just before being consumed, one larva was found dead. Pseudoterranova decipiens was found í 16 instances (89%), Anisakis simplex in two (11%). The one Anisakis case was a wriggling larva detected in the diaper of a baby that was believed to have ingested the larva with undercooked fish three days earlier in the kindergarten

Discordant population histories of host and its parasite: A role for ecological permeability of extreme environment?

Biogeographical and ecological barriers strongly affect the course of micro-evolutionary processes in free living organisms. Here we assess the impact of a recently emerged barrier on populations of limnic fauna. Genetic diversity and population structure in a host-parasite system (Wenyonia virilis tapeworm, Synodontis schall catfish) are analyzed in the recently divided Turkana and Nile basins. The two basins, were repeatedly connected during the Holocene wet/dry climatic oscillations, following late Pleistocene dessication of the Turkana basin. Mitochondrial DNA sequences for cytochrome oxid

Cardiac, ventilatory and metabolic responses of two ecologically dissimilar species of fish to waterborne cyanide.

Changes in heart rate, ventilatory activity and oxygen consumption were determined in trout (Salmo gairdneri) and brown bullhead catfish (Ictalurus nebulosus) during exposure to a steadily increasing concentration of waterborne cyanide selected to produce death in 8-9 hours for each species. The lethal cyanide concentration for the bullheads was an order of magnitude higher than for trout. Trout developed an immediate and gradually increasing bradycardia throughout the exposure period. Cyanide produced tachycardia in the bullhead followed by a gradual onset of bradycardia as the concentration

A standing wave tube-like setup designed for tomographic imaging of the sound-induced motion patterns in fish hearing structures.

BACKGROUND: Modern bony fishes exhibit a considerable variation in the morphology of their hearing structures, and the morphological composition of these has been studied for centuries. However, the precise interaction and contribution of individual structures to hearing remains unclear in many species. Measurements of their motion in situ are challenging and pose the risk of damage or altering results through invasive intervention. Recent developments in time-resolved synchrotron-radiation-based tomography have opened up possibilities for non-destructive quantification of the micron-level mot

Identification of molecular determinants of antibiotic resistance in some fish farms of Ghana.

Antimicrobial resistance is a global health challenge caused by the ability of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, protozoans and viruses to survive the effects of drugs that hitherto were effective against them. This study sought to investigate the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and their corresponding molecular determinants in fish farms of the Central and Western Regions of Ghana. Management practices and antibiotic use at the fish farms were obtained through the administration of a questionnaire. Coliform and Gram-positive bacterial loads of catfish (Clarias gariepinus), t

Assessment of hematological, hepato-renal, antioxidant, and hormonal responses of Clarias gariepinus exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of oxyfluorfen.

Little is known about the effects of oxyfluorfen, a diphenyl ether herbicide, exposure on the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) health. Consequently, the existing investigation was designed to highlight the impacts of oxyfluorfen exposure on C. gariepinus hematological indices, liver and kidney functions, reproductive hormones, and oxidative status. Furthermore, a consequent 10-day depuration period was adopted to evaluate the recovery of the disturbed indicators to normal values. In the first experiment, the 96-h lethal concentration 50 (LC50) of oxyfluorfen for C. gariepinus was determine

Myxobolus axelrodi n. sp. (Myxosporea: Myxobolidae) a parasite infecting the brain and retinas of the cardinal tetra Paracheirodon axelrodi (Teleostei: Characidae).

An investigation of mortalities in a group of cardinal tetras Paracheirodon axelrodi Meyers, 1936, a popular ornamental fish, revealed myxozoan parasites in ventricles of the brains in 3/10 fish and the ocular retina of a fourth. Parasite impacts were unclear, as additional histopathological findings were present, including bacterial dermatitis and meningitis. Ethanol-preserved specimens pooled from multiple fish were used for morphological characterization of myxospores. Elongate, teardrop myxospores were 20.5 ± 0.7-μm (mean ± SD; range = 19.0-21.8 μm) long, 6.6 ± 0.5-μm (5.7-7.9 μm) wide, an

A comprehensive study on Salmonella enterica serovar Richmond in farmed fish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus: insights into zoonotic potential, virulence and antimicrobial resistance.

Salmonella enterica serovar Richmond is an emerging pathogen from contaminated animal food, posing a risk of global foodborne outbreaks. Few reports have documented this species in live aquatic organisms. In this study, Salmonella Richmond COFI-RLBCAU-I was isolated from live Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, and its pathogenicity was tested on the three most culturable fish species, P. hypophthalmus, Labeo rohita, and Oreochromis niloticus. The results showed that the bacteria are non-pathogenic to these three species. Techniques, including β-hemolytic activity, Gram staining, biochemical tests su

Role of neuropeptide Y in the regulation of gonadotropin releasing hormone system in the forebrain of Clarias batrachus (Linn.): immunocytochemistry and high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometric analysis.

Although the importance of neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the regulation of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and reproduction has been highlighted in recent years, the neuroanatomical substrate within which these substances might interact has not been fully elucidated. Present work was undertaken with a view to define the anatomical-physiological correlates underlying the role exercised by NPY in the regulation of GnRH in the forebrain of the teleost Clarias batrachus. Application of double immunocytochemistry revealed close associations as well as colocalizations of the two peptides in the olfa
