Important parasites in poultry production systems.

Poultry now accounts for 30% of all meat consumed. Parasites are a problem where ever poultry are raised, whether in large commercial operations or in small back-yard flocks, and economic losses can be significant. This paper will briefly review the major protozoan, helminth, and arthropod species in poultry including pathogenesis. Other topics will include the importance of the interaction of other diseases and parasites, and control of the infection by chemotherapy, management, and immunity.

An epidemiological survey of Echinococcus granulosus and other helminths in animal populations in northern Israel.

In a survey carried out during the period May 1995 to November 1996, in communities of various ethnic groups in northern Israel, 206 dogs were examined for Echinococcus granulosus and other intestinal helminth parasites by arecoline hydrobromide purges and the coproantigen-ELISA. The arecoline test was performed close to the owners' homes, using plastic sheets secured to the ground. From 56 dogs examined in the Muslim town of Tamra, six (10.7%) were found to be infected with E. granulosus. Four of them also had a mixed infection of Taenia hydatigena and Dipylidium caninum (two dogs), and the r

[Diagnositc value and limitations of the ELISA test applied to hydatidosis].

The authors studies ELISA test for human hydatidosis with 289 sera. They got a positive level at 1.15 O. D. without any cross reaction. ELISA test detected 42 cases of hepatic localisations, 5 of 5 pulmonary hydatidosis and 1 for 4 other localisations. The authors showed a good correlation and complementarity with different serological tests: immuno-fluorescence, indirect hemagglutination. They applied ELISA test to the post-therapeutic controls. No serological peak was detected and for 6 of 13 cases, the serology was negative between 7th and 90th day following the treatment. It is impossible

Host-parasite-microbiome interactions in gastrointestinal trematodes and cestodes of small ruminants: current advances and future perspectives.

Gastrointestinal helminth infections remain a major problem for sheep and goat farming worldwide. In the past, research mainly focused on the shape, classification, spread, health effects, and genetic makeup of the parasites. With the advent of new next-generation sequencing technologies, we now better understand the gut ecosystem and the important roles of host-parasite-microbiome interactions in animal health. The digestive tract of sheep and goats contains microbes that aid digestion, nutrient utilization, immune function, and the maintenance of homeostasis. New research shows that helminth

Efficacy of Revolution®Plus in cats for the prevention of Dipylidium caninum transmission by infected Ctenocephalides felis.

BACKGROUND: Revolution® Plus is a topical combination drug product containing selamectin and sarolaner that has been proven effective against the cat flea Ctenocephalides felis, the intermediate host of the cestode Dipylidium caninum. Here, we report two studies evaluating the efficacy of a single administration of Revolution Plus in preventing D. caninum infection in cats for 1 month through killing of the flea intermediate host. METHODS: Two studies (study 1 and 2) with the same design were conducted. In both studies, 2 treatment groups of ten cats each were enrolled. On Day 0, the cats in

REVISION OF THE LECANICEPHALIDEAN GENUS FLAPOCEPHALUS DESHMUKH, 1979 (EUCESTODA) FROM COWTAIL RAYS (GENUS PASTINACHUS RÜPPELL) (MYLIOBATIFORMES: DASYATIDAE JORDAN AND GILBERT) WITH THE DESCRIPTION OF FOUR NEW SPECIES.

The genus Flapocephalus Deshmukh, 1979, is a little-known group of lecanicephalidean cestodes parasitizing cowtail rays (genus Pastinachus Rüppell) mainly in the Indo-Pacific region. Since the erection of the genus, with Flapocephalus trygonis Deshmukh, 1979, as the type species, and the description of a second species, Flapocephalus saurashtri Shinde and Deshmukh, 1979, both from Pastinachus sephen (Fabricius) from India, reports of this genus have been restricted mainly to brief mentions or discussion of its validity and taxonomic placement. More recently, phylogenetic analyses based on mole

Squamata reptiles as a potential source of helminth infections when preyed on by companion animals.

BACKGROUND: Squamate reptiles cohabiting with companion animals may represent a source of helminth infections, especially through predation by dogs and cats with an outdoor lifestyle. METHODS: In order to assess the role of reptiles as intermediate/paratenic hosts of trophically transmitted helminths, synanthropic reptiles (n = 245) captured from different ecological settings (i.e., households, dog shelters, urban, peri-urban and rural areas or natural parks) of southern Italy were examined for endoparasites. Parasitic cysts (i.e., larval forms of acanthocephalans, cestodes and nematodes) and

Analysis of Dipylidium caninum tapeworms from dogs and cats, or their respective fleas - Part 2. Distinct canine and feline host association with two different Dipylidium caninum genotypes.

Initial investigations suggested the existence of two distinct genotypes of Dipylidium caninum from infected cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis). One genotype was found almost always (> 95%) in fleas collected from, and proglottids shed by, domestic dogs. The other was found almost always (> 95%) in fleas collected from, and proglottids shed by, domestic cats. Molecular investigations (Part 1, in this journal) confirmed the presence of two distinct genotypes. Due to the apparent host association observed, these were referred to as the "D. caninum canine genotype" and the "D. caninum feline genot

Biological significance of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase in a cestode parasite, Raillietina echinobothrida and effect of phytoestrogens on the enzyme from the parasite and its host, Gallus domesticus.

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) is involved in glycolysis in the cestode parasite, Raillietina echinobothrida; whereas, it executes a gluconeogenic role in its host, Gallus domesticus. Because of its differing primary function in the cestode parasite and its host, this enzyme is regarded as a plausible anthelmintic target. Hence, the biological significance of PEPCK in the parasite was analysed using siRNA against PEPCK from R. echinobothrida (RePEPCK). In order to find out the functional differences between RePEPCK and GdPEPCK (PEPCK from its host, G. domesticus), PEPCK genes from b

Genetic and morphological characterization of Thysaniezia tapeworms from cattle and sheep in Senegal.

Genetic and morphological diversity of Thysaniezia tapeworms from cattle and sheep in Senegal was investigated using light and scanning microscopic observations and molecular analysis based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and nuclear small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA). A total of 52 adult tapeworms were collected from sheep and cattle. Although the tapeworms of the two hosts were morphologically very close, phylogenetic analysis based on cox1 and SSU rDNA gene sequences showed that they were divided into two clades corresponding each to a host. The maximum pairw

Echinococcus multilocularis Leuckart, 1863 (Taeniidae): new data on sperm ultrastructure.

The present study establishes the ultrastructural organisation of the mature spermatozoon of Echinococcus multilocularis, which is essential for future research on the location of specific proteins involved in the sperm development in this species and also in Echinococcus granulosus. Thus, the ultrastructural characteristics of the sperm cell are described by means of transmission electron microscopy. The spermatozoon of E. multilocularis is a filiform cell, which is tapered at both extremities and lacks mitochondria. It exhibits all the characteristics of type VII spermatozoon of tapeworms, n

Host-parasite relationships as determinants of heavy metal concentrations in perch (Perca fluviatilis) and its intestinal parasite infection.

The concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn and their bioconcentration factors (BCFs) were determined in two intestinal parasites, an acanthocephalan, Acanthocephalus lucii, a tapeworm, Proteocephalus percae, present in the same host, the European perch (Perca fluviatilis, L.), in the heavily polluted Ružín reservoir in eastern Slovakia. The bioaccumulation of heavy metals in the fish organs and parasites was studied for acanthocephalan and tapeworm monoinfections or mixed infections by the two parasites and for the size of their parasitic infrapopulations. Experimental cerebral and non-cerebral coenurosis in goats: A comparative study on the morphological and molecular characteristics of the parasite.

This experimental study was conducted to test whether cerebral and non-cerebral forms of Coenurus cerebralis belong to one origin or they are originated from two different tape worms. In the first step of the study, two groups of dogs were orally infected with the protoscoleces of cerebral and non-cerebral cysts and four months after infection, the adult worms were collected and morphologically characterized. Then the obtained eggs from two groups of adult worms were orally inoculated to two groups of goats to trace the predilection sites and also to compare the morphological and molecular cha

The trypanorhynch cestode fauna of Borneo.

Borneo is considered a centre for biodiversity in both the terrestrial and aquatic environments. However, information on the diversity of parasites and trypanorhynch cestodes infecting sharks and rays in particular is rather limited at present. During a large-scale study focusing on the parasite diversity of elasmobranchs from Malaysian and Indonesian Borneo a total of 520 spiral intestines of elasmobranchs were collected during seven years of extensive sampling. Trypanorhynch cestodes were discovered in 163 specimens belonging to 43 different elasmobranch species (i.e. 17 species of sharks an

Prevalence of faecal-borne parasites in colony stray cats in northern Italy.

Endoparasitic infections are common in stray cats. Many of these parasites are responsible for zoonoses, and stray cats can be a source of environmental contamination. The prevalence of parasites in 139 stray colony cats in the city of Milan, northern Italy, was investigated by faecal examination. The overall prevalence of endoparasites was 50.4%, with 11 different parasites found. Parasites with zoonotic potential were detected in 49.6% of cats. Concurrent infections with two or more zoonotic parasites were recorded in 14.3% of cats. Among the parasites found, the most common was Toxocara cat

Nothing is perfect! Trouble-shooting in immunological and molecular studies of cestode infections.

This personal review focuses on ways to approach and overcome some of the more common issues encountered while studying cestode zoonoses. The information presented here is based on the author's own experiences with immunological and molecular approaches for the detection of these parasites. There are many incongruities between immunological and molecular studies due to biased work. Nothing is perfect. Indirect approaches using either immunological, or even molecular tools, are limited without confirmation from direct evidence of infection. The dilemma of whether developing countries should dev
