Integrating morphological, anatomical, and physiological traits to explain elevational distributions in Himalayan steppe and alpine plants.

Understanding plant adaptive strategies that determine species distributions and ecological optima is crucial for predicting responses to global change drivers. While functional traits provide mechanistic insights into distribution patterns, the specific trait syndromes that best predict elevational optima, particularly in less-studied regions such as the Himalayas, remain unclear. This study employs a novel hierarchical framework integrating morphological, anatomical, and physiological traits to explain elevational distributions among 310 plant species across a 3,500-m gradient (2,650-6,150 m

Work at high altitude and non-fatal cardiovascular disease associated with unfitness to work: Prospective cohort observation.

INTRODUCTION: Mining at high altitude exposes workers to hypoxic environment and cold climate in addition to conventional hazards in mining, but very little is known on how to define fitness to work in prospective candidates with pre-existing conditions. The aim of the current study was to define the incidence of cardiovascular diseases leading to unfitness to work as well as their predictors in a prospective observation. METHODS: A total of 569 prospective employees (median age 34 (interquartile range (IQR) 28;40) years, 95% men 85% mid-altitude residents) for a high-altitude gold mine in Ky

Ground-based and OMI-TROPOMI NO2 measurements at El Arenosillo observatory: Unexpected upward trends.

Eleven years, January 2008 to June 2019, of hourly nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels recorded at El Arenosillo observatory (Southwestern Europe) were analyzed. Annual averages ranged between 4 μg m-3 and 6 μg m-3 with peaks exceeding 40 μg m-3. A slight monthly variation was observed with maximum and minimum values in the cold (∼6 μg m-3) and warm (∼4 μg m-3) seasons respectively. A diurnal pattern was found with a weak amplitude (∼3 μg m-3). The monthly trends were investigated using surface observations and OMI (Ozone Monitoring instrument) satellite measurements. An unexpected upward trend was

Concomitant Temperature Stress and Immune Activation may Increase Mortality Despite Efficient Clearance of an Intracellular Bacterial Infection in Atlantic Cod.

The environmental temperature has profound effects on biological systems of marine aquatic organisms and plays a critical role in species distribution and abundance. Particularly during the warmer seasons, variations in habitat temperature may introduce episodes of stressful temperatures which the organisms must adapt to and compensate for to maintain physiological homeostasis. The marine environment is changing and predicted raises in water temperatures will affect numerous marine species. Translocation of pathogens follow migration of species and alternations in physical environmental parame

Understanding the responses of rice to environmental stress using proteomics.

Diverse abiotic and biotic stresses have marked effects on plant growth and productivity. To combat such stresses, plants have evolved complex but not well understood responses. Common effects upon perception of environmental stress are differential expression of the plant proteome and the synthesis of novel regulatory proteins for protection from and acclimation to stress conditions. Plants respond differently in terms of activation of stress-responsive signaling pathways depending upon the type and nature of the stresses to which they are exposed. Progress in proteomics and systems biology a

Earwax cortisol in bovines: biological and seasonal influences.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate stress assessment in animals requires reliable biomarkers, yet the impact of intrinsic (sex and age) and extrinsic (seasonal) factors on earwax cortisol concentrations (ECCs) has not been thoroughly studied. Therefore, the effects of sex, age and seasonal climate on ECC were investigated in Hanwoo cattle (Bos taurus coreanae). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Monthly earwax samples were collected from the left ear canal of 22 individual cattle. These comprised 7 males and 15 females as a cohort of 19 animals in March 2022 with 3 additional calves recruited through the study period

Anthropogenic modulation of ice-nucleating particles over the Yellow and East China Seas: Shipboard observations and single-particle analysis.

To address the scarcity of observational data on atmospheric ice-nucleating particles (INPs) over the mixed marine-continental environments of East Asia, shipboard measurements were conducted over the Yellow Sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS) in April 2022. Aerosol samples were collected using an electrostatic collector and subsequently activated in a water vapor diffusion cloud chamber. To characterize their physicochemical properties, a subset of selected samples underwent single-particle analysis via a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy-dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS). Pandemic-associated disruption of seasonal mortality patterns in Lusaka, Zambia.

INTRODUCTION: Climate-sensitive mortality in rapidly urbanising tropical Africa is poorly characterised, and how pandemics disrupt established seasonal patterns remains underexplored. We analysed long-term all-cause mortality in Lusaka, Zambia, to quantify pre-COVID-19 seasonality and examine pandemic-associated deviations. METHODS: We conducted an observational, exploratory longitudinal time-series analysis of routinely collected monthly all-cause mortality data from Lusaka, Zambia (January 2013 to December 2023; n=180 276). Seasonal dynamics were assessed using classical decomposition and K

Dry eye disease symptoms and associated risk factors in a Norwegian clinical cohort.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between dry eye disease (DED) symptoms and different demographic, clinical and lifestyle factors remains poorly understood. Norway's cold climate and dry indoor air may accelerate tear evaporation, contributing to a very high meibomian gland dysfunction prevalence, as found in multiple studies. This suggests that environmental factors and age converge to drive evaporative dry eye as a near-universal finding in the Norwegian population. This study aimed to assess demographic, clinical and lifestyle correlates of DED symptoms, with a focus on sex-related differences

Thematic Evolution in Medical Education Research (2000-2024): A Large-Scale BERTopic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Few large-scale, semantically informed mappings of medical education research exist: traditional methods such as keyword co-occurrence and Latent Dirichlet Allocation cannot capture the contextual meaning of scientific abstracts. This study aimed to identify major research topics in medical education, classify their temporal trends, explore temporal associations with major policy and technology developments, and characterize their structural positioning. METHODS: We applied BERTopic, a transformer-based topic modeling framework, to 276,253 English-language publications from PubMed

HIV broadly neutralizing antibodies for children: implementation barriers in low-income settings.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Broadly neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (bNAbs) represent a transformative frontier for the prevention, treatment, and potential remission of HIV in children. Given that over 95% of the pediatric population living with or at risk for HIV resides in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), prioritizing trials and implementation in these regions is an ethical and clinical imperative. This review identifies the primary structural, biological, and regulatory barriers that must be addressed to ensure equitable global access to bNAb-based interventions. RECENT FINDINGS:

Assessing environmental and pandemic influences on mortality through seasonal time series models.

Understanding the interplay between air pollution, climate variables, and mortality is essential for developing evidence-based public health policies and mitigating environmental health risks. Seasonal mortality patterns, particularly winter peaks, are often associated with increased air pollution and low temperatures. However, understanding the combined associations of these factors, especially under global disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic, poses a challenge for public health research and policy. This study shows that the monthly number of deaths from all-natural causes in Portugal f

Insights into heterogeneous streamflow generation processes and water contribution in forested headwaters.

Understanding how diverse headwater streams contribute water downstream is critical for accurate modeling of seasonal flow dynamics in larger systems. This study investigated how headwater catchments, with diverse subsurface storage, influence downstream flows within Lookout Creek-a 62 km2, 5th-order catchment in the rain-snow transition zone in western Oregon, USA. We analyzed one year of hydrometric and water stable isotope data collected at ten stream locations, complemented by a decade of precipitation isotopic data. As expected, isotopic data revealed that most of the streamflow was sourc

Effects of long-term very high-altitude exposure on cardiopulmonary function of healthy adults in plain areas.

Due to the unique plateau climate, such as low atmospheric pressure, hypoxia, cold, and dryness, people in plain areas will have a series of physiological and pathological changes after entering the plateau. This observational study was designed to assess the effects of long-term very high-altitude (HA) exposure on the cardiopulmonary function of healthy adults in plain areas through cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). We tracked and observed 45 healthy adult men or women from the plain area (Beijing, with an altitude of approximately 40 m). They worked and lived in very HA areas (Lhasa,

Techniques for Developing and Assessing Immune Responses Induced by Synthetic DNA Vaccines for Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Vaccines are one of mankind's greatest medical advances, and their use has drastically reduced and in some cases eliminated (e.g., smallpox) disease and death caused by infectious agents. Traditional vaccine modalities including live-attenuated pathogen vaccines, wholly inactivated pathogen vaccines, and protein-based pathogen subunit vaccines have successfully been used to create efficacious vaccines against measles, mumps, rubella, polio, and yellow fever. These traditional vaccine modalities, however, take many months to years to develop and have thus proven less effective for use in creati

Integrating environmental, entomological, animal, and human data to model the Leishmania infantum transmission risk in a newly endemic area in Northern Italy.

INTRODUCTION: Historically, leishmaniasis in Italy was constrained to areas with Mediterranean climate. In the last 20 years, sand fly vectors (Phlebotomus perniciosus), cases of canine leishmaniasis (CanL) and cases of human visceral leishmaniasis (VL) have been observed in Northern Italian regions, traditionally classified as cold areas unsuitable for sand fly survival. AIM: We aim to evaluate through a One-Health approach the risk of endemic transmission of Leishmania infantum in the Piedmont Region, Northern Italy. METHODS: We collected environmental, entomological, animal, and human dat

Study on the population evolution of Ascaris lumbricoides and Ascaris suum based on whole genome resequencing.

Ascaris lumbricoides and Ascaris suum are parasitic nematodes that mainly parasitize the small intestines of people and pigs, respectively. Ascariasis seriously endangers human health and causes huge economic losses in the pig industry. A. lumbricoides and A. suum have similar morphologies and genetic structures, and occasionally these organisms cross-infect the alternate host. Therefore, their taxonomies are controversial. In this study, the whole genomes of A. lumbricoides (n = 6) and A. suum (n = 6) were resequenced using a HiSeq X Ten sequencing platform. Phylogenetic, principal component,

The role of seed appendage in improving the adaptation of a species in definite seasons: a case study of Atriplex centralasiatica.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: As a common accompanying dispersal structure, specialized seed appendages play a critical role in the successful germination and dispersal of many plants, and are regarded as an adaptation character for plants survival in diverse environments. However, little is known about how the appendages modulate the linkage between germination and environmental factors. Here, we tested the responses of germination to seasonal environmental signals (temperature and humidity) via seed appendages using Atriplex centralasiatica, which is widely distributed in salt marshlands with dry-cold winter
