OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to summarize the best available evidence regarding the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions to treat orthostatic hypotension (OH) in elderly people and people with a neurological condition.
INTRODUCTION: Orthostatic hypotension is common in elderly people and people with a neurological condition and can interfere with or limit rehabilitation. Non-pharmacological interventions to treat OH could allow for longer and earlier mobilization, which is recommended in national clinical guidelines for rehabilitation in the acute or sub-acute pha

INTRODUCTION: Lymphedema is one of the most frequent and disabling complications following surgical treatment for breast cancer, with a global prevalence that varies depending on associated therapies such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This condition significantly affects patients' quality of life by limiting upper limb function and causing symptoms such as pain, heaviness, reduced mobility, and difficulties in performing daily activities. Currently, Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT), consisting of manual lymphatic drainage, multilayer bandaging, therapeutic exercise, and flat-knit compres

OBJECTIVE: Lymphoedema is estimated to affect up to 300,000 Canadians but remains underrecognised and undertreated. A retrospective chart review was conducted to determine the clinical characteristics and treatment practices of lymphoedema in a Canadian wound care clinic.
METHOD: Data were collected retrospectively from dictated clinic notes of 326 lymphoedema patients at a wound clinic in a regional rehabilitation hospital.
RESULTS: The mean age (±SD) of diagnosis was 66.8 (±15.5). Patients had 7.3 (±3.3) comorbidities and took 8.4 (±4.6) concomitant medications. The most common comorbiditi

To evaluate the impact of a nurse-led, multidisciplinary education programme on wound healing, patient knowledge, and adherence to compression therapy, physical activity, and nutrition in individuals with venous leg ulcers (VLU). In this randomised controlled trial, 87 patients with VLU from three outpatient clinics in Western Switzerland were allocated to an intervention group (IG) receiving structured education plus standard care, or a control group (CG) receiving standard care alone. The 12-month intervention included in-person education, counselling, and follow-ups. The primary outcome was

STUDY OBJECTIVE: We compare buddy taping with plaster casting for uncomplicated fifth metacarpal (boxer's) fractures. We hypothesize buddy taping will give superior functional outcomes at 12 weeks, defined as a 10-point difference on the Shortened Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (quickDASH) score.
METHODS: This randomized controlled trial included patients aged 18 to 70 years, with uncomplicated boxer's fractures in 2 hospitals in Queensland, Australia. The intervention consisted of buddy taping of the ring and little fingers on the affected side, in which the control group receive

Chronic wounds can pose a challenging diagnostic and treatment dilemma in the older frail adult population. The benefits of short-term rehabilitation and long-term care settings are the access to interdisciplinary resources. Rehabilitative specialists, dieticians, and skilled nurses are readily available to meet the patients' needs as they transition to home or remain in a long-term care setting for their higher level of care needs. This article follows 3 cases: a skin tear complicated by venous ulceration, a pressure ulcer with fever, and arterial ulcers in a patient who opts for comfort care

BACKGROUND: Operative treatment of calcaneus fractures is associated with the risk of early wound complications. Though accepted practice dictates surgery should be delayed until soft tissues recover from the initial traumatic insult, optimal timing of surgery has not been delineated.
METHODS: A retrospective chart and radiographic review at a level I trauma center was performed to determine if an aggressive inpatient soft tissue management protocol designed to decrease the time delay from injury to surgery is effective at reducing complications. Ninety-seven patients (17 female, 80 male; mea

BACKGROUND: Venous ulcers are a frequent complication of chronic venous insufficiency. Compression therapy remains the mainstay of conservative treatment, as many patients are not candidates for surgical intervention.
CASE: A 78-year-old man was referred to our Preservation-Amputation Care and Treatment for management of 3 venous stasis ulcers on the front of the left lower leg. Multiple comorbid conditions and his generally poor health rendered him a poor candidate for surgical reperfusion In addition, his right leg was amputated approximately 3 years before, and he was nonweight bearing on

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the experiences of patients with hard-to-heal (chronic) leg ulcers (LUs) whose lesions were treated with an inelastic, adjustable compression system (ACS). The specific goal was to evaluate the impact of an ACS on wound healing, patient quality of life (QoL) and self-management.
METHOD: In this prospective, single-centre observational study, patients who presented with either unilateral or bilateral hard-to-heal LUs received treatment with an ACS. The study included patients diagnosed with venous leg ulcers, ulcers of unknown origin or of mixed aetiolog

BACKGROUND: Leg ulcers associated with chronic venous disease (CVD) are characterized by prolonged healing and high recurrence. This study describes the effectiveness and tolerability of venoactive drugs (VAD) combined with compression as part of conservative therapy for active venous leg ulcers among patients treated in routine clinical practice.
METHODS: This prospective, multicenter, observational, 6-month study recruited patients diagnosed with Clinical, Etiology, Anatomy, and Pathophysiology (CEAP) clinical class C6 and active venous ulcer area, 5-30 cm2. VAD pharmacotherapy was at the d

BACKGROUND: Fractures are common in the pediatric population. The initial evaluation is rarely by an orthopaedic surgeon, but commonly an emergency room or urgent care center physician/extender. This typically involves splint application by a nonorthopaedist to immobilize the extremity and provide stabilization. Iatrogenic injuries from inappropriate splint placement are a potential public health and legal concern that can lead to complications. The primary purpose of this study was to prospectively evaluate the adequacy of all splints placed on patients who presented to a pediatric orthopaedi

PURPOSE: To assess the effectiveness and safety of a product containing diosmin, coumarin, and arbutin (Linfadren®) in addition to complex decongestive therapy (CDT) on the management of patients with a breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL).
METHODS: Fifty outpatients (average age of 56.2 ± 2.7 years, range 28-71) with a BCRL were enrolled for this study. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1 ratio) to receive either CDT consisting of skin care, manual lymphatic drainage, remedial exercises, and elastic compression garment (control group, n = 25) or CDT plus Linfadren® (study group, n = 25).

PURPOSE: Posttraumatic edema in facial bone fracture patients may interfere with the operation field and delay the schedule. Thus, swiftly reducing the edema alleviates patient discomfort and advances the operation date. Ice packing and compression bandages are often used for such a purpose, but such methods are often inconvenient for the face. In this study, we aim to analyze the effect of light-emitting diode (LED) (590/830 nm)-based low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in posttraumatic edema in facial bone fracture patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 40 pa

OBJECTIVE: Tube thoracostomy is a life-saving procedure that must be performed competently and expeditiously by emergency care providers. The primary objective of this project was to develop a simple, easily-reproducible, and realistic simulation model for tube thoracostomy placement by learners of emergency medicine.
METHODS: This chest tube simulator utilizes two slabs of pork ribs with associated intercostal muscle and fascial planes to aid learners in identifying anatomic landmarks, palpating intercostal spaces, and performing blunt dissection in a manner that approximates human anatomy.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has established itself as a safe and efficient treatment option in patients with severe aortic valve stenosis, regardless of the underlying surgical risk. Widespread adoption of transfemoral procedures led to more patients than ever being eligible for TAVR. This increase in procedural volumes has also stimulated the use of vascular closure devices (VCDs) for improved access site management. In a single-center examination, we investigated 871 patients that underwent transfemoral TAVR from 2010 to 2020 and assessed vascular complications according to

OBJECTIVE: Subcutaneous effusion (SCE) is an increasingly prevalent complication of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) cranioplasty, with no effective preventive strategies established to date. This case series aimed to explore interventions for reducing SCE incidence in such patients.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 33 patients who underwent PEEK cranioplasty at our institution from July 2023 to December 2025. Intraoperatively, the layered suspension fixation method (LSFM) was adopted to suture subcutaneous tissues and underlying muscles to the PEEK implant, minimizing subcutaneo
